Chapter 8: The Daughter Hidden Away

Daniel stared at the picture for almost a full minute.

Nobody dared speak.

The baby in the photograph was tiny.

Pink.

Sleeping peacefully.

A small blanket covered her.

She looked like any newborn.

Completely innocent.

But the message underneath changed everything.

Your daughter.

Daniel’s daughter.

He looked at Claire.

“Is this real?””

Claire was crying silently.

“I don’t know.””

That answer destroyed him.

“You don’t know?””

She shook her head.

“I thought Emily was handling everything.””

Emily’s voice came through the phone.

“Claire.””

Everyone looked.

Emily was still on the call.

“You knew.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I knew she gave birth.””

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“When?””

“Two weeks ago.””

The anger returned.

“You knew there was a baby.””

Claire whispered:

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

She couldn’t answer.

Daniel laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because he was broken.

“You always were.””

The sentence hurt more than shouting.

“You were always going to tell me later.””

Claire collapsed into tears.

But then Emily spoke.

“There’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

“The baby was never supposed to be hidden.””

Everyone looked at her.

“Then why was she?””

Emily took a breath.

“Because someone changed the hospital records.””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

Victoria immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Emily continued.

“The original paperwork listed Claire as the intended parent.””

Daniel looked confused.

“But?””

“But someone removed her name.””

A terrible feeling entered the room.

“Who?””

Emily didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Claire’s sister.””

Claire froze.

“My sister?””

Emily nodded.

“She came to the hospital.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“You have a sister?””

Claire looked away.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Another secret.

Another lie.

Claire whispered:

“Because she’s dangerous.””

Nobody expected that.

Victoria laughed.

“Oh, please.””

Claire looked at her.

“You know exactly what she’s capable of.””

The first time Claire spoke about her sister, there was real fear.

Not guilt.

Not panic.

Fear.

“My sister never wanted me to have this baby.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

Claire looked at the picture.

“Because she wanted control.””

Then her phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

Claire looked at the screen.

Her face went white.

The name displayed:

*Megan.*

Her sister.

Nobody spoke.

Claire answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Calm.

Cold.

“Did you really think you could hide my mistake forever?””

Claire stepped backward.

“Where are you?””

The woman laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

Daniel moved closer.

“Who is this?””

Silence.

Then the woman said:

“I’m the reason your wife lied to you.””

The call ended.

Seconds later, the front door opened.

A woman walked into the house.

She looked almost identical to Claire.

Same eyes.

Same features.

But nothing about her felt warm.

She looked at Daniel.

Then at the photograph in his hand.

May you like

And smiled.

“You finally found out.””
