Amused

Chapter 4: The Plan Claire Built

Daniel didn’t speak during the entire drive home.

Not one word.

I had never seen him like that.

Anger was easier.

Sadness was easier.

But confusion?

That was different.

Because Daniel still loved Claire.

That was the part nobody wanted to admit.

When someone hurts you, your heart doesn’t immediately stop caring.

Sometimes it just breaks while still holding on.

When we reached his house, Claire was waiting outside.

She looked different.

No makeup.

No perfect smile.

No elegant dress.

Just a woman who looked like she had lost control of everything.

“Daniel.””

He stepped out of the car.

“You need to explain.””

Claire looked at me.

“You brought her?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No more distractions.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.””

“Scared enough to fake a child?””

Claire looked away.

“I thought I was protecting us.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Protecting us?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

She wiped her tears.

“Because I knew you wanted to be a father.””

“And?””

“And I knew I couldn’t give you that.””

The silence that followed was heavy.

Claire finally admitted what happened.

Years earlier, she had received medical news.

She couldn’t have children.

Instead of telling Daniel, she hid it.

At first, she planned to confess.

Then months passed.

Then years.

And the fear became bigger.

“I thought if I gave you hope,” she whispered, “you would never leave.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“You built a fake pregnancy because you were afraid I would leave?””

Claire nodded.

But then Daniel asked:

“Why were you planning to disappear?””

Her face changed.

She froze.

I noticed.

Daniel noticed too.

“You didn’t think I knew about that.””

Claire said nothing.

He stepped closer.

“Emily told us.””

Claire closed her eyes.

Finally, she whispered:

“I owed someone money.””

“Who?””

No answer.

“Claire.””

She looked up.

“My sister.””

I frowned.

“Your sister?””

Claire nodded.

“She helped me pay for treatments. She said I owed her.””

Daniel looked confused.

“So you were going to leave me?””

“I was going to fix everything.””

“That makes no sense.””

Claire began crying.

“I thought I could find a way to give you the family you deserved.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You don’t understand what I deserved.””

Her tears stopped.

“I deserved the truth.””

For the first time, Claire looked like she understood the damage she had caused.

But before anyone could say more, a car stopped outside.

A woman stepped out.

She looked directly at Claire.

And Claire’s entire face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

The woman walked toward us.

“Claire.””

Nobody moved.

Claire whispered:

“Victoria…”

The woman smiled.

Not kindly.

“You really thought you could run from me?””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Who is she?””

May you like

Victoria looked at him.

“I’m the person who paid for your wife’s little performance.””
