Chapter 6: The Baby Nobody Knew About
Nobody spoke after Sophie’s words.
The silence was so complete that I could hear the wind moving through the trees outside Daniel’s house.
Victoria’s confident expression had vanished.
For the first time that night, she looked like someone who had been caught.
Daniel slowly turned toward Claire.
“A real baby?””
Claire’s lips parted.
No words came out.
“Claire,” Daniel said quietly.
“What did she mean?””
Claire looked at Victoria.
Then at Sophie.
Then at the ground.
And somehow, that hesitation answered more than any confession could have.
My heart pounded.
Because all the pieces that never made sense suddenly felt connected.
The fake pregnancy.
The ultrasound pictures.
The hidden contracts.
The fear.
There was something much bigger happening.
Daniel stepped closer.
“I asked you a question.””
Claire wiped her tears.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
His face tightened.
“Tell me what?””
She took a shaky breath.
“That I did have a baby.””
Everyone froze.
The words felt impossible.
A baby.
A real baby.
Daniel stared at her.
“What are you saying?””
Claire looked like she had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.
“Three months ago, I found out I was pregnant.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Pain.
“Three months ago?””
She nodded.
“But the doctor said there were complications.””
“What complications?””
Claire looked away.
“The baby wasn’t mine.””
The sentence made no sense.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
Claire swallowed.
“I mean… biologically.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You’re telling me you were pregnant with someone else’s baby?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The driveway went silent again.
Victoria crossed her arms.
“This is exactly why I told you she couldn’t handle the truth.””
Daniel turned toward Victoria.
“You knew?””
Victoria shrugged.
“I knew everything.””
My anger rose.
“You let this happen?””
Victoria looked at me.
“You think I forced her?””
She laughed.
“Claire came to me.””
Daniel looked back at his wife.
“Why?””
Claire’s voice cracked.
“Because I was desperate.””
She explained slowly.
After years of believing she would never become a mother, she had discovered a medical possibility.
A woman named Emily Parker had been carrying a baby through a complicated arrangement.
Claire had become involved because she believed she could finally give Daniel the family he wanted.
But something went wrong.
The arrangement fell apart.
Emily couldn’t keep the baby.
Claire panicked.
Instead of telling Daniel the truth, she created another story.
A fake pregnancy.
A fake miracle.
A fake future.
“But why?”” Daniel whispered.
Claire looked at him.
“Because I knew if I told you the truth, you would see me differently.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You didn’t give me a chance.””
“I was scared.””
“You were scared of losing me, so you built a lie big enough to destroy us.””
Claire started crying.
But before Daniel could respond, Victoria stepped forward.
“There’s more.””
Everyone looked at her.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What more?””
Victoria smiled slightly.
“The baby was never the problem.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“Victoria, stop.””
“No.””
Victoria pulled out her phone.
“I think everyone should see this.””
She pressed a button.
A recording started playing.
Claire’s own voice filled the driveway.
“I just need enough time. Once Daniel believes the baby is real, everything will be easier.””
Daniel froze.
His face changed.
Because hearing a lie was one thing.
Hearing yourself being manipulated was another.
The recording continued.
“I’ll tell him eventually.””
Victoria’s voice appeared.
“And if you don’t?””
Claire answered:
“Then I’ll leave before he finds out.””
The recording ended.
Daniel looked like he couldn’t breathe.
“You were going to leave me?””
Claire whispered:
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Nobody defended her.
Not even Claire.
Then my phone suddenly rang.
I looked at the screen.
It was an unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Are you Daniel Harrison’s sister?””
“Yes.””
“This is Emily Parker.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
Her voice shook.
“You need to get Daniel away from Claire.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
A pause.
May you like
Then Emily whispered:
“Because the baby isn’t the only thing Claire lied about.””
