Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Lie
Victoria didn’t raise her voice.
She didn’t need to.
There was something frightening about how calm she was.
She stood in Daniel’s driveway wearing a dark coat, holding a leather handbag, looking like she had walked into a meeting instead of a family disaster.
Claire stepped between them.
“Victoria, please.””
Victoria laughed softly.
“Please?””
She looked at Claire.
“That word didn’t exist when you took my money.””
Daniel stared.
“What money?””
Victoria turned toward him.
“Your wife borrowed a lot.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“Don’t.””
“Why not?””
Victoria smiled.
“Your husband deserves the truth.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“How much?””
Claire didn’t answer.
Victoria did.
“Nearly eighty thousand dollars.””
My stomach tightened.
“For what?””
Victoria looked at Claire.
“Tell him.””
Claire looked down.
“I was trying to pay for treatment.””
Victoria shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone froze.
“No?””
Victoria stepped closer.
“You weren’t paying for treatment.””
Claire’s eyes filled with panic.
“Stop.””
“You were paying for a business.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What business?””
Victoria opened her handbag.
She pulled out a folder.
Inside were photographs.
Not medical records.
Not fake ultrasound pictures.
Something else.
Contracts.
Names.
Payments.
Daniel picked one up.
“What is this?””
Victoria answered:
“Your wife wasn’t pretending to be pregnant only for you.””
The air disappeared from the room.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“What does that mean?””
Claire began crying.
“I can explain.””
Victoria smiled.
“That’s what she always says.””
Daniel looked through the papers.
Then he stopped.
His expression changed.
“Claire…”
She didn’t answer.
“What is this?””
I moved closer.
On the paper was a company name.
A company connected to Claire.
A company that arranged something called “family assistance services.””
Daniel looked at his wife.
“Were you selling fake pregnancy stories?””
Claire shook her head desperately.
“No.””
Victoria interrupted.
“She was arranging them.””
The truth was becoming darker with every sentence.
Claire wasn’t just hiding infertility.
She wasn’t just faking a pregnancy.
She had created an entire system.
But there was one thing that still didn’t make sense.
Sophie.
My daughter had somehow discovered the truth before any adult.
I looked at her.
She was standing beside my mother, quietly watching.
“Sophie,” I said gently.
She looked at me.
“Why did you know Claire’s belly was fake?””
Everyone turned.
Sophie looked nervous.
She hugged her toy rabbit.
“Because I saw the lady.””
“What lady?””
“The lady who gave Claire the pillow.””
Victoria suddenly stopped smiling.
Daniel noticed.
“Who was the lady, Sophie?””
My daughter looked at Victoria.
Then whispered:
“Her.””
Nobody moved.
Victoria’s expression finally broke.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
And then Sophie said the words that made the entire truth collapse.
“She told Claire that if the baby party failed… she would make sure nobody ever found the real baby.””
A terrible silence followed.
Because suddenly, everyone understood.
There was another secret.
One Claire had never confessed.
May you like
There was a real baby.
And someone had been hiding it.
