Amused

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Smile

The celebration ended within fifteen minutes.

A room full of laughter became a room full of accusations.

My father asked everyone to leave, but nobody wanted to walk away.

Not because they cared about the party anymore.

They wanted answers.

Daniel stood near the fireplace, staring at Claire like he was looking at a stranger.

“I need the truth,” he said.

Claire sat on the sofa, crying into her hands.

“I can’t believe this is happening.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Neither can I.””

I had never seen my brother look so broken.

Daniel was usually calm. Even when things went wrong, he was the person who stayed reasonable.

But that night, he looked like the ground beneath him had disappeared.

Claire looked at me.

“Are you really going to let your daughter destroy my marriage?””

The accusation shocked me.

“My daughter is four years old.””

“Exactly,” Claire snapped.

“She doesn’t understand what she saw.””

Sophie immediately held onto my hand.

She hated being yelled at.

But she didn’t cry.

She just looked hurt.

Daniel noticed.

“Don’t talk to her like that.””

Claire looked away.

That was the first moment I realized something.

Claire wasn’t angry because Sophie was lying.

She was angry because Sophie had said something she didn’t want anyone to hear.

My husband Mark quietly pulled me aside.

“Do you believe Sophie?””

I looked at my daughter.

She was sitting beside my mother, drawing on a piece of paper.

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

And that was the hardest truth.

Because believing Sophie meant accepting that Claire had deceived everyone.

But doubting Sophie meant believing my own child had invented something serious.

Neither option felt possible.

Then my mother walked toward us.

“I need to tell you something.””

Her voice was low.

“What?””

She glanced toward Claire.

“Two months ago, I saw Claire leaving a medical building.””

I frowned.

“Okay?””

“She looked upset. I asked if everything was okay.””

“And?””

“She said the doctor told her the pregnancy was high risk.””

I waited.

“What’s wrong with that?””

My mother hesitated.

“She never showed me any paperwork.””

I felt a strange feeling in my stomach.

“Mom, you think she lied?””

“I don’t know.””

Nobody knew.

That was the problem.

The entire family had trusted Claire so completely that nobody had ever asked questions.

Then Daniel walked over.

“I’m taking Claire home.””

Everyone became silent.

Claire stood.

“Daniel—”

“No.””

One word.

Cold.

Final.

“I need space.””

The tears returned to Claire’s eyes.

“You’re abandoning me because of this?””

Daniel stared at her.

“I’m asking for the truth.””

She grabbed her purse.

“I am your wife.””

“And I am your husband,” he replied.

“Which is why I deserve honesty.””

They left without another word.

The next morning, my phone rang at 6:13 a.m.

It was Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“What happened?””

His voice sounded exhausted.

“Can you come over?””

“Is Claire there?””

A pause.

“No.””

That worried me.

“Daniel, what did you find?””

Another pause.

Then he said:

“I found something in her closet.””

I sat up.

“What?””

“A box.””

“What was inside?””

His breathing changed.

Like he still couldn’t believe what he had seen.

“Pictures.””

“Pictures of what?””

“The baby.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“Daniel, what do you mean?””

His voice dropped.

“Because they weren’t pictures of our baby.””

A cold silence filled the phone.

“What were they pictures of?””

May you like

Then he said something that made my entire body go still.

“Every ultrasound image had another woman’s name on it.””
