Chapter 7: Emily’s Final Warning

Daniel took the phone from my hand.

“Emily?””

“Yes.””

His voice was cold.

“What else don’t I know?””

Emily hesitated.

“I didn’t want to tell you this over the phone.””

“Tell me.””

A long silence followed.

Then:

“Claire knew about the baby before I did.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“She found my records.””

The room became still.

Emily continued.

“She knew I was pregnant. She knew my situation. She knew I was struggling financially.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“You found her?””

Claire said nothing.

That was enough.

“You searched for her?””

Claire whispered:

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped back.

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to help.””

Emily’s voice came through the speaker.

“No. You wanted a solution.””

Claire closed her eyes.

Emily explained everything.

Claire had discovered Emily through a private support group.

She learned Emily was pregnant, alone, and desperate.

Instead of offering normal help, Claire created a plan.

She would convince Daniel she had become pregnant naturally.

Then, after the birth, she would bring the baby into their family.

She believed she could erase the truth.

Daniel looked devastated.

“You were going to take a child and pretend it was ours?””

Claire cried.

“I loved that baby.””

“But you lied to me.””

“I was trying to build a family.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were trying to build a fantasy.””

The words hurt.

Even I could feel it.

Because Claire’s original pain was real.

Her inability to have children.

Her fear.

Her sadness.

But the way she handled it had hurt everyone around her.

Then Emily said something that made my blood run cold.

“There’s another person involved.””

Daniel looked at the phone.

“Who?””

Emily whispered:

“The hospital employee.””

Victoria suddenly looked uncomfortable.

Daniel noticed.

“Victoria?””

She said nothing.

“What does she know?””

Victoria sighed.

“She helped arrange paperwork.””

Daniel stared.

“So you were both involved.””

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“Don’t act innocent. Your wife came to me because she wanted this.””

Claire looked at her.

“You promised nobody would get hurt.””

Victoria laughed.

“I promised results.””

The argument exploded.

Everyone talked over each other.

Daniel walked away.

I followed him.

He stood in the backyard, staring at the empty pool.

“I don’t know who she is anymore.””

I knew exactly what he meant.

Because Claire had spent years becoming someone everyone trusted.

And now nobody knew where the truth ended and the lies began.

A few minutes later, Sophie walked over.

“Uncle Daniel?””

He looked down.

“What?””

She held her toy rabbit.

“Are you mad?””

Daniel crouched.

“No, sweetheart.””

“She was mean to you.””

He forced a small smile.

“Why did you say something?””

Sophie looked confused.

“Because she told me not to.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Sophie looked at me.

“Claire told me not to tell anyone about the pillow.””

Daniel stood.

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

Everyone went silent.

“What exactly did she say?””

Sophie thought carefully.

“She said grown-ups get angry when little kids tell secrets.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Why would you say that to her?””

Claire started crying.

“I was scared.””

But then Sophie added:

“She also said if I talked, the baby would go away.””

Nobody moved.

Because that sentence changed everything.

Claire wasn’t just hiding the truth.

She was using fear.

Even against a child.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From an unknown sender.

One photo.

A hospital room.

A newborn baby.

May you like

And underneath it, one sentence:

*Your daughter is alive. But Claire was never supposed to find out.*
