Amused

Chapter 9: The Fall Of The Man Behind The Curtain

Three days later, Victor Hayes walked into the Whitmore company headquarters believing he owned the building.

He wore an expensive suit.

A confident smile.

And the arrogance of a man who had spent years winning.

But this time, nobody greeted him.

Nobody smiled.

Nobody shook his hand.

Because every employee had received the same message.

A truth file.

Every email.

Every recording.

Every document.

Every lie.

Victor walked into the conference room.

Daniel was waiting.

Alongside Sarah.

His lawyers.

And several board members.

Victor smiled.

“So this is your big moment?””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

Victor sat down.

“This is your mistake.””

Daniel pushed a folder across the table.

Victor opened it.

His smile disappeared.

Inside was evidence.

Enough to destroy him.

“You think paperwork scares me?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He leaned forward.

“But your own voice might.””

Victor stopped.

Daniel pressed a button.

The room filled with the recording.

Victor’s own words.

His own plan.

His own cruelty.

For the first time, fear appeared on his face.

When the recording ended, nobody spoke.

Victor looked at Elena.

“You betrayed me.””

Elena looked away.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I finally stopped helping you.””

Victor laughed.

“You think these people will forgive you?””

Daniel answered.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel continued.

“She has to live with what she did.””

Elena lowered her eyes.

“But unlike you, she admitted the truth.””

Victor stood.

“You think you’re better than me?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I know I’m not.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Daniel continued.

“I ignored my son. I trusted lies. I hurt people.””

He looked at Leo’s picture on his desk.

“But I’m fixing it.””

Victor stared.

“You’re weak.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He smiled sadly.

“I was weak when I cared more about being right than listening.””

The authorities arrived twenty minutes later.

Victor’s confidence finally disappeared.

As he was escorted away, he looked at Daniel.

“This isn’t over.””

Daniel watched him leave.

For once, he believed it was.

That evening, Daniel sat in the backyard with Leo.

The boy was drawing.

“What are you making?””

Leo held up the paper.

“A family.””

Daniel smiled.

The picture was simple.

Three people.

A father.

A mother.

A child.

Daniel looked at Sarah.

She smiled softly.

“You’re in it too.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

A quiet moment passed.

Then Leo asked:

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Why did everybody lie?””

Daniel looked at his son.

He could have given an easy answer.

But Leo deserved the truth.

“Sometimes people get so scared of losing something that they hurt the people they love.””

Leo thought about it.

“Did you get scared?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Did you hurt people?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Leo looked down.

Then said:

“But you came back.””

Daniel felt tears fill his eyes.

“Yes.””

He hugged his son.

“I came back.””

Later that night, Daniel received one final envelope.

No return address.

Inside was a letter.

From Martha.

He opened it slowly.

The first line made his heart stop.

“Daniel, I need you to know one more thing about Leo…”

He kept reading.

And the truth waiting inside was something nobody had discovered.

Not Sarah.

Not Richard.

Not Victor.

Not even Martha.

May you like

Because the final secret wasn’t about money.

It was about the day Leo was born.
