Chapter 8: The Evidence They Never Expected
The courtroom was colder than Daniel expected.
Maybe because of the air conditioning.
Maybe because every person sitting inside was deciding the future of his son.
Leo sat with a family counselor outside the courtroom.
Sarah sat beside Daniel.
Neither of them spoke much.
They didn’t need to.
They both understood.
This wasn’t just a legal battle.
This was the moment where the truth had to finally win.
Victor’s attorney stood.
“Your Honor, we are asking for temporary custody restrictions due to concerns about the child’s emotional wellbeing.””
Daniel’s hands tightened.
Emotional wellbeing.
The words felt cruel.
Because the people who damaged Leo were now pretending to protect him.
The attorney continued.
“Mr. Whitmore has a history of absence.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
That one hurt.
Because it was true.
Even if the reason was manipulation, his son had still felt abandoned.
Sarah squeezed his hand.
The attorney turned.
“And Ms. Collins has a history of conflict with the Whitmore family.””
Sarah stood.
“Because they lied about me.””
The judge raised a hand.
“Please answer only when asked.””
Sarah sat.
Daniel looked at Victor.
The man was calm.
Confident.
Like he had already won.
Then Victor’s attorney placed documents on the table.
“Messages showing Ms. Collins threatening legal action.””
Daniel looked confused.
Sarah frowned.
“I never sent those.””
The attorney smiled.
“They came from your phone number.””
Sarah looked shocked.
Someone had framed her.
Daniel stood.
“This is fake.””
The judge looked at him.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
Daniel sat back down.
But inside, something changed.
Victor had underestimated one thing.
Daniel was done being passive.
After the hearing ended for recess, Daniel’s lawyer finally appeared.
He looked exhausted.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel stared.
“You disappeared.””
“I was threatened.””
“By Victor?””
The lawyer nodded.
“He has been collecting information for months.””
Sarah stepped closer.
“What information?””
The lawyer opened his briefcase.
“I found something.””
He removed a small flash drive.
Daniel looked at it.
“What is that?””
“Your mother’s old computer backup.””
Daniel froze.
“My mother’s?””
The lawyer nodded.
“Victor missed one thing.””
“What?””
“He didn’t know Martha kept copies.””
They found a private conference room.
The lawyer opened the files.
Emails.
Messages.
Recordings.
Daniel watched silently.
Then one file appeared.
A conversation between Martha and Victor.
The audio began.
Martha’s voice.
“She won’t leave.””
Victor answered.
“Then make Daniel believe she did.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Sarah grabbed his arm.
The recording continued.
“She has Leo.””
“Then use the child.””
Daniel’s face changed.
The words were worse than he imagined.
Because they weren’t rumors.
They weren’t accusations.
They were proof.
Victor’s voice came through the speakers.
“Once Sarah is gone, Daniel will need someone he trusts.””
Martha laughed.
“And Elena?””
“She’s useful.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
Elena.
The woman he almost married.
She was never the plan.
She was just a piece.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel whispered:
“They never loved me.””
Sarah looked at him.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“They loved what they could take from you.””
A knock interrupted them.
The door opened.
Elena stood there.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
“I need to tell you something.””
Daniel looked away.
“Why should I believe you?””
“Because this time I have proof.””
She walked inside.
And placed a phone on the table.
“I recorded Victor.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Elena swallowed.
“He started doubting me after the wedding failed.””
Sarah crossed her arms.
“And now you’re helping us?””
Elena looked ashamed.
“No.””
She looked at Daniel.
“I’m trying to fix what I helped break.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
Elena pressed play.
Victor’s voice filled the room.
“Your job was simple, Elena. Marry him. Keep him distracted. Make sure Sarah never comes back.””
Daniel felt sick.
Elena cried silently.
“I thought he wanted me to be happy.””
Sarah looked at her.
“He wanted you to be useful.””
The truth was finally coming out.
But then Elena’s phone buzzed.
Her face changed.
“What?””
Daniel looked at her.
“What happened?””
She slowly turned the phone around.
A message from Victor.
“If you help them, your brother goes to prison.””
Everyone went silent.
Daniel stared.
Victor wasn’t just attacking them.
He was still controlling people.
Still holding secrets.
Still pulling strings.
And Daniel realized something.
May you like
The only way to defeat Victor…
Was to expose everything.
