Chapter 6: The Person Behind The Lies

Daniel stared at the message on his phone until the letters blurred.

“Daniel, your mother wasn’t working alone.””

For a moment, the cold night air outside the ballroom disappeared.

The sounds of cars leaving, guests whispering, and cameras flashing all faded into the background.

Only those seven words remained.

He looked at Sarah.

She immediately noticed his expression.

“What happened?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Leo was still holding his hand, tired and confused after the longest night of his young life.

“Daddy?””

Daniel forced himself to look down.

“Yeah, buddy?””

“Are we really going home?””

The question broke something inside him.

Because for two years, Leo had been asking a question much bigger than that.

Are you really my dad?

Do you really want me?

Am I still your family?

Daniel crouched down.

“Yes.””

He squeezed his son’s hand.

“We’re going home.””

Leo smiled slightly.

A small smile.

The kind children give when they finally believe something they’ve been hoping for.

Sarah watched them quietly.

Then she asked again.

“Daniel, who sent that?””

He turned the phone around.

Her face changed.

“I don’t know.””

Martha’s name flashed through Daniel’s mind.

But something about the message felt different.

His mother had been exposed.

So who was left to protect?

Richard stepped outside behind them.

“I think I know.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel frowned.

“You do?””

Richard looked toward the ballroom doors.

“I was hoping I was wrong.””

Sarah crossed her arms.

“Wrong about what?””

Richard sighed.

“About Elena’s family.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What does her family have to do with this?””

Richard looked at Elena’s father.

Then at Daniel.

“You think Martha created all of this because she hated Sarah?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Richard continued.

“She hated losing control.””

The words stayed in the air.

“She wanted Daniel’s money. His company. His reputation. But someone gave her the idea that Sarah had to disappear.””

Sarah’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Richard looked at the wedding invitation still lying on the table.

Then he said a name.

“Victor Hayes.””

Daniel froze.

“Your brother?””

Richard nodded.

Elena’s uncle.

A businessman who had spent years competing against Daniel.

Daniel remembered him.

The fake smiles.

The friendly handshakes.

The constant questions about his company.

“How much does he know?”” Daniel asked.

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“More than he should.””

A sudden sound came from behind them.

A woman’s voice.

“Dad?””

Everyone turned.

Elena stood at the ballroom entrance.

Her makeup was ruined.

Her wedding dress looked less like a bridal gown and more like a costume from a life that had already ended.

She looked at Richard.

“What are you doing?””

Richard stared at his daughter.

“Elena.””

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

“Please let me explain.””

Daniel almost laughed.

“Explain what?””

She walked closer.

“That I didn’t know everything.””

Sarah’s expression remained cold.

“You knew enough.””

Elena looked at her.

“I knew Martha didn’t like you.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Elena looked down.

Daniel felt something inside him collapse.

Because silence was always an answer.

“You knew she lied about the letters.””

Elena whispered:

“Yes.””

Leo looked up at his father.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“When did you find out?””

Elena wiped her tears.

“Months ago.””

“Months?””

She nodded.

“Martha told me she had handled everything.””

Daniel stepped back.

“And you still married me?””

“I loved you.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You loved the future you thought you were getting.””

Elena flinched.

“That’s not fair.””

Daniel looked at her.

“My son spent two years believing his father abandoned him.””

His voice cracked.

“And you stood next to the people who caused it.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel’s phone rang again.

Unknown number.

This time, he answered.

“Who is this?””

A man’s voice came through.

Calm.

Confident.

Almost amused.

“Daniel Whitmore.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Who are you?””

The man laughed softly.

“You really don’t recognize me?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

The older man’s face had gone pale.

“No.””

The voice continued.

“That’s the problem with you, Daniel. You trust the people closest to you.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Tell me your name.””

A pause.

Then:

“Victor Hayes.””

Everyone went still.

Daniel walked away from the group.

“What do you want?””

Victor laughed.

“Actually, Daniel, I already got what I wanted.””

“What?””

“Your family destroyed itself.””

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

“You ruined innocent people’s lives.””

“No.””

Victor’s voice became sharper.

“I exposed weaknesses.””

Daniel looked back at Sarah and Leo.

“You used my son.””

“I used what Martha gave me.””

Daniel froze.

“What does that mean?””

Victor continued.

“Your mother was desperate. I simply showed her the easiest way to keep Sarah away.””

Daniel felt sick.

“You manipulated her.””

“I guided her.””

“You destroyed my family.””

“No, Daniel.””

Victor’s voice lowered.

“You destroyed your family when you stopped asking questions.””

The call ended.

Daniel stood there.

Silent.

Because the worst part was…

Victor was right.

For two years, Daniel wanted to believe the easiest story.

The story that required no pain.

No confrontation.

No admitting he was wrong.

Sarah walked toward him.

“What did he say?””

Daniel looked at her.

“He said this isn’t over.””

Richard picked up the box.

“We need to move quickly.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

Richard looked toward the city lights.

“Because Victor doesn’t just destroy people.””

He paused.

“He takes everything they own.””

Daniel looked at his phone.

A second message appeared.

This one had an attachment.

A photograph.

Daniel opened it.

And his entire body went cold.

It was a picture of Leo.

Taken that morning.

At school.

By someone watching him.

Underneath the picture were four words:

“Next time, I take him.””
