Chapter 2: The Secret Behind The Missing Letters

Daniel had imagined many ways his wedding day could go wrong.

A storm.

A delayed ceremony.

A forgotten ring.

He never imagined standing in front of hundreds of people while his mother admitted she had destroyed the only connection between him and his son’s mother.

The beautiful ballroom no longer felt like a celebration.

It felt like a courtroom.

Martha tried to recover quickly.

“Everyone needs to calm down,” she said.

“This is a misunderstanding.””

Daniel laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“A misunderstanding?””

He pointed toward Leo.

“My son thinks I hate him because of you.””

Martha crossed her arms.

“I protected you.””

“From what?””

“From Sarah.””

The name alone made Daniel’s chest tighten.

For years, he had believed Sarah walked away.

He believed she chose money over family.

But now every memory felt different.

The arguments.

The missed calls.

The strange silence.

All of it.

Elena walked closer.

“Daniel, maybe we should discuss this privately.””

He turned toward her.

“Did you know?””

Her face froze.

“What?””

“Did you know about the letters?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

“Did you know my mother was lying to me?””

Elena looked offended.

“How could you ask me that?””

“Because my son just exposed something that was supposed to stay hidden.””

Leo stood beside the stage, watching everything.

A wedding photographer lowered his camera.

Nobody was taking pictures anymore.

They were watching.

Martha stepped closer.

“Daniel, you’re letting a child manipulate you.””

Daniel looked at her.

“My seven-year-old son knew about letters you hid.””

“He doesn’t understand.””

“Then explain it.””

Martha became quiet.

Daniel waited.

She had always been good with words.

She could convince anyone of anything.

But today, she had no story.

Only silence.

A waiter quietly approached Daniel.

“Sir?””

Daniel looked over.

The waiter held a small envelope.

“Your son dropped this earlier.””

Daniel frowned.

“What is it?””

Leo immediately recognized it.

“My mama’s.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside was an old photograph.

A picture of Sarah holding baby Leo.

On the back were handwritten words.

Daniel’s hands trembled.

“Daniel, please don’t believe everything you hear…”

His heart stopped.

That handwriting.

He knew it.

Sarah’s handwriting.

He flipped the picture over again.

The date was from two years ago.

After the day he thought she left.

“She was still trying to reach me,” he whispered.

Leo nodded.

“She never stopped.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The guilt came rushing in.

He remembered the last argument with Sarah.

He had shouted.

He had told her maybe leaving was what she wanted.

And then his mother told him Sarah disappeared with no goodbye.

He never searched.

He never questioned.

He trusted the wrong person.

A voice interrupted his thoughts.

“Elena.””

Everyone turned.

One of the bridesmaids was standing near the entrance.

She looked terrified.

Elena stared at her.

“What?””

The bridesmaid swallowed.

“I need to tell Daniel something.””

Elena’s face changed.

“Not now.””

But Daniel heard it.

“Tell me.””

The woman looked at Elena.

Then at Daniel.

“I heard them talking yesterday too.””

The ballroom became silent again.

Daniel stepped forward.

“What did you hear?””

The bridesmaid hesitated.

Then she said:

“I heard Elena ask Martha if Sarah still had proof.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Proof of what?””

The woman looked down.

“Proof that Martha was the reason Sarah left.””

A cold feeling moved through Daniel’s body.

He looked at Elena.

The woman he was supposed to marry.

The woman standing beside his mother.

The woman who had just become part of his family.

“Elena,” he said quietly.

She didn’t answer.

“Why would Sarah need proof?””

Elena’s lips parted.

But before she could speak, Leo suddenly grabbed Daniel’s hand.

“Daddy.””

Daniel looked down.

“What?””

Leo pointed toward the back doors.

A woman stood there.

Holding a folder.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Because he knew that face.

He hadn’t seen it in two years.

May you like

But he would recognize her anywhere.

Sarah.
