Chapter 3: The Woman Everyone Said Was Gone

Nobody moved.

Not Daniel.

Not Martha.

Not Elena.

The entire ballroom watched as Sarah walked slowly toward them.

She looked different.

Older.

Tired.

But her eyes were the same.

The same eyes Daniel had once promised he would never hurt.

Leo ran toward her.

“Mommy!””

Sarah dropped the folder and hugged him tightly.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered into his hair.

Daniel watched them.

His son.

His first love.

The family he thought he lost.

Standing only a few feet away.

Sarah looked up.

Their eyes met.

And Daniel felt every regret of the last two years hit him at once.

“Sarah…”

Her expression broke slightly.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Like she had practiced this moment a thousand times.

“I thought you were gone,” Daniel said.

Sarah gave a sad smile.

“I was never gone.””

Martha immediately stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Sarah looked at her.

“No, Martha. What’s ridiculous is that you convinced your own son that I abandoned my child.””

Guests whispered louder.

Daniel looked at the folder in Sarah’s hand.

“What’s that?””

She picked it up.

“Everything you never received.””

Martha’s face turned pale.

“Don’t.””

Sarah ignored her.

“These are copies of every letter I sent.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“Copies?””

Sarah nodded.

“I knew something was wrong when none of them got responses.””

She opened the folder.

“I mailed them. I called. I came to your house.””

Daniel looked confused.

“You came?””

Sarah nodded.

“Three times.””

His face fell.

“I never saw you.””

“I know.””

Her eyes moved toward Martha.

“Because she made sure of that.””

Martha raised her voice.

“Stop blaming me for your failed relationship.””

Sarah laughed softly.

“Failed?””

She looked around the room.

“You told Daniel I left because he wasn’t rich enough. You told him I wanted more money. You told him I didn’t care about Leo.””

She stepped closer.

“But you knew the truth.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What truth?””

Sarah opened the folder.

She pulled out a document.

“Your mother threatened me.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Sarah looked at him.

“She told me if I didn’t disappear, she would make sure I lost custody of Leo.””

Martha shook her head.

“Lies.””

Sarah pulled out another paper.

“A recording transcript from our conversation.””

Daniel grabbed it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Martha’s voice.

Threats.

Warnings.

Cruel words.

His own mother.

He looked sick.

“Martha…”

She looked away.

“I was protecting your future.””

“My future?””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“You destroyed my family.””

Elena suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t let her manipulate you.””

Sarah looked at her.

“You knew.””

Elena froze.

Daniel turned.

“Knew what?””

Sarah’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew about the letters.””

Elena looked away.

That was enough.

Daniel’s heart sank.

“Answer me.””

Elena whispered:

“I only found out recently.””

“Recently?””

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“I don’t.””

Elena’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked scared.

Sarah reached into the folder again.

“There’s more.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What more?””

She handed him a small envelope.

“This one was never sent.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The first line made his hands shake.

“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means I finally found a way around your mother…”

He looked up.

Sarah’s voice softened.

“I wrote that two years ago.””

Daniel stared at the letter.

Then at Martha.

Then at Elena.

And he realized something terrifying.

The lies weren’t just about the past.

They had been preparing something.

Something that involved his money.

His name.

His son.

May you like

Sarah whispered:

“Daniel, you need to know why they wanted me gone.””
