Chapter 8: The Mother’s Secret
I didn’t remember leaving the interrogation room.
I only remembered one thought.
My mother was alive.
Or at least alive enough to break into a police evidence room.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who cried at my father’s funeral.
The woman who told me every night that good people always found their way home.
Another lie.
Another person.
Another secret.
Emma sat beside me in the waiting area.
Lily slept with her head against Emma’s shoulder.
I watched them.
Eight years ago, I lost my wife.
Tonight, I found her.
But somehow I was still losing pieces of myself.
Emma touched my arm.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t have to apologize for other people’s choices.””
I looked at Lily.
“She spent years believing you left.””
Emma’s eyes filled.
“I know.””
“You missed everything.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“Her first day of school. Her first tooth falling out. Her birthday parties.””
I looked away.
Because I knew exactly what she was feeling.
The pain of stolen time.
Then the door opened.
An officer walked in.
“We found your mother.””
I stood.
“Where?””
“She was waiting outside the station.””
My heart tightened.
“Bring her in.””
A few minutes later, my mother entered.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
“Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“How?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was afraid.””
I laughed softly.
“Everyone is always afraid.””
She lowered her head.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“I should have protected you.””
“Yes.””
She looked at Emma.
“I’m sorry.””
Emma didn’t answer.
My mother sat down.
“Your father wasn’t the man you thought he was.””
I closed my eyes.
“I’m tired of hearing that.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
She took a deep breath.
“Your father didn’t die.””
I already knew.
But hearing it again hurt.
“He left.””
“Why?””
“Because he was running.””
“From who?””
She looked at Richard’s file.
“From the people he betrayed.””
I frowned.
“Richard?””
“Yes.””
“But Richard said my father destroyed him.””
My mother nodded.
“Because both things are true.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Your father was not innocent.””
The words hurt.
“He did terrible things.””
My mother looked down.
“But he loved you.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t erase anything.””
“No.””
She wiped her tears.
“It doesn’t.””
For the first time, I saw regret in her eyes.
Not fear.
Regret.
“Your father discovered Richard’s plans.””
“What plans?””
“He wanted control of everything.””
My mother looked toward Lily.
“He wanted your company. Your money. Your future.””
I thought about Vanessa.
Her obsession.
Her patience.
Her perfect performance.
“She learned from him.””
My mother nodded.
“Vanessa was raised around manipulation.””
A silence followed.
Then my mother reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out an envelope.
“I kept this for twenty years.””
I stared.
“What is it?””
“A letter from your father.””
I didn’t move.
“Why would you have this?””
“Because he asked me to give it to you when you were ready.””
I almost laughed.
“Ready?””
She looked at me.
“I wasn’t sure you ever would be.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was one page.
Only a few sentences.
My hands shook.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then everything I feared happened.
Richard found you.
Vanessa found you.
And I failed to protect you.
But there is one thing you need to know.
The person you trust most is not who you think.
I looked up.
My mother was crying.
“What does this mean?””
She whispered:
“It means your father knew.””
“Knew what?””
She looked toward Emma.
“Knew Vanessa would come for you.””
Then my phone buzzed.
A video message.
Unknown sender.
I pressed play.
The screen showed a dark room.
A man sat in a chair.
Older.
Weak.
Terrified.
I recognized him immediately.
My father.
Then he spoke.
“Daniel…”
My blood froze.
“If you’re watching this…”
He looked directly into the camera.
May you like
“Your mother has already lied to you.””
The video ended.
