Chapter 7: The Man Behind Every Lie

Richard Cole looked older than I remembered.

But not weaker.

Some people age like they regret their choices.

Richard looked like a man who had spent years preparing to defend them.

He sat across from me in the interrogation room.

No handcuffs.

No fear.

Just a calm expression that made my stomach turn.

“Hello, Daniel.””

I stared at him.

“You’re alive.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

I clenched my fists.

“My whole life, I thought you were dead.””

“I know.””

The simplicity of his answer made me furious.

“You know?””

Richard looked away.

“I made difficult choices.””

I laughed.

“You disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“You let me bury you.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe Emma abandoned me.””

His eyes moved toward the window.

“Yes.””

Every answer was a knife.

No excuses.

No denial.

Just confirmation.

“Why?””

Richard finally looked at me.

“Because I needed you to become exactly what you became.””

I stared.

“What?””

“A successful man.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

He leaned forward.

“Your father spent his entire life trying to destroy me.””

“Your father?””

He smiled faintly.

“I’m talking about the man who raised you.””

My stomach tightened.

“My father.””

“Yes.””

Richard folded his hands.

“He stole my company. He destroyed my reputation. He took everything from me.””

“And your solution was to destroy my life?””

Richard’s face hardened.

“Your father destroyed mine first.””

I stood.

“You’re insane.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“I’m patient.””

The word stayed with me.

Patient.

That was exactly what Vanessa had been.

Patient.

She didn’t attack all at once.

She slowly replaced everyone.

She slowly changed my memories.

Richard continued.

“When your father died, I saw an opportunity.””

“You faked his death?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Your father did that himself.””

The room went silent.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard sighed.

“Your father was involved in things you never knew about.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

He was listening carefully.

“What things?””

Richard hesitated.

“Money laundering. Fraud. Blackmail.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“You loved him. I understand.””

“He was my father.””

“And he used that love.””

I wanted to believe Richard was lying.

I wanted to hate him.

But then he placed a photograph on the table.

A photograph of my father.

And Vanessa.

Together.

“She was sixteen when she first met him.””

My blood ran cold.

“Vanessa?””

Richard nodded.

“She learned from him.””

“Learned what?””

“How to control people.””

The door suddenly opened.

Vanessa was brought inside by two officers.

The moment she saw Richard, her expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You.””

Richard looked at her.

“Hello, Vanessa.””

She laughed quietly.

“I thought you were gone.””

Richard smiled.

“I thought the same about you.””

The detective watched them.

“You two know each other.””

Neither answered.

I looked between them.

“You were working together.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“No.””

Richard answered at the same time.

“Yes.””

The room froze.

Vanessa glared at him.

“Shut up.””

Richard ignored her.

“She stopped following orders years ago.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What orders?””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“You were supposed to scare Emma.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Don’t.””

“You were never supposed to keep her alive.””

The silence was horrifying.

Emma covered her mouth.

I felt sick.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa looked at me.

For the first time…

she looked human.

Not because she was innocent.

Because she was afraid.

Richard leaned back.

“Your fiancée became a problem.””

Vanessa whispered:

“You promised me everything.””

Richard smiled.

“And you believed me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You killed for him?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

Then she said something I never expected.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa looked directly at Richard.

“I killed because you taught me how.””

Richard’s expression changed.

And I realized something.

The man who created Vanessa…

was afraid of her too.

Then Detective Harris received a message.

He read it.

His face turned pale.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Mr. Parker…”

“What happened?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

“The evidence room was broken into.””

My stomach dropped.

“What evidence?””

He looked toward Vanessa.

“The files proving Emma’s kidnapping.””

A pause.

Then:

“And the person who broke in…”

May you like

He swallowed.

“Was your mother.””
