Amused

Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Door

The first time I heard my missing wife’s voice in eight years, it came from behind a locked door at my engagement party.

For years, I had believed the same story everyone else believed.

Emma Parker abandoned me. She abandoned our daughter. She walked away from the life we built and never looked back.

I hated her for it.

I mourned her for it.

And on the night I was supposed to begin a new chapter with Vanessa Cole, I discovered that every painful memory I carried had been built on a lie.

The ballroom of the Hawthorne Estate had been decorated with white roses, gold candles, and expensive champagne. Friends and family filled the room, smiling as they celebrated my engagement to Vanessa.

My eight-year-old daughter, Lily, had been sitting quietly near the dessert table.

At least, I thought she was quiet.

Then the screaming started.

“Daddy!””

The entire ballroom turned.

Lily stood in front of the old oak door at the end of the hallway, her small hands pounding against the wood.

“Daddy, she’s in there!””

I froze.

That door.

I had seen it many times.

It belonged to a storage room that had been locked since before we bought the estate. Vanessa always said the previous owners left it full of broken furniture and useless junk.

No one had touched it.

No one had opened it.

Until now.

I pushed through the crowd.

“Lily, what are you doing?”” I asked.

She turned around, tears covering her face.

“Mommy is inside!””

The room went silent.

Vanessa appeared behind her almost instantly.

Her smile was gone.

“Lily,” Vanessa said sharply, “move away from that door.””

My daughter stepped back.

“I heard her crying,” Lily whispered.

Vanessa walked forward and grabbed Lily’s wrist.

“Enough.””

The way she said it made my stomach tighten.

Not worried.

Not gentle.

Angry.

Lily pulled away.

“You hid her!”” she cried.

Everyone stared.

Vanessa looked around at the guests and forced a laugh.

“I’m sorry. She’s overwhelmed. Children sometimes create stories when they’re struggling.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What is she talking about?””

Vanessa reached for my arm.

“Daniel, please. She’s been emotional all day.””

But Lily pointed at her.

“You said my mom left us!””

Vanessa’s expression hardened for a split second before returning to that perfect smile.

“Your mother left years ago, sweetie.””

Those words hit me like a slap.

Because they were the exact words I had heard eight years earlier.

Emma had disappeared on a rainy Tuesday night.

The police searched.

Her family searched.

I searched until I couldn’t sleep without seeing her face.

But after months turned into years, everyone told me the same thing.

She chose to leave.

Vanessa had been the person who helped me rebuild my life.

She was there when Lily cried.

She was there when I thought I couldn’t breathe anymore.

She convinced me I deserved happiness again.

Now she stood in front of me, telling my daughter she was lying.

I stepped closer.

“Lily, tell me exactly what happened.””

Lily pointed at the door.

“I found the key behind the painting.””

She reached into her pocket and pulled out an old brass key.

My heart started pounding.

That key was covered in dust.

It looked like it had been hidden for years.

Vanessa suddenly moved.

Too quickly.

“Give that to me.””

I noticed it.

The fear in her eyes.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Before she could reach Lily, something happened.

Knock.

Everyone froze.

A slow, heavy knock came from behind the oak door.

Nobody spoke.

Then—

Knock.

Another one.

Slower.

Louder.

The ballroom became completely silent.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Her hand slowly moved toward her purse.

I watched her face lose all color.

A third knock echoed through the hallway.

Knock.

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

“Please open it.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“Daniel, don’t.””

I had spent eight years believing my wife abandoned us.

I had spent eight years teaching my daughter to accept that her mother was gone.

But someone was behind that door.

Someone who knew my name.

I grabbed the key from Lily.

My fingers trembled as I unlocked it.

Click.

The sound was louder than the music.

I reached for the handle.

Then I heard it.

A voice.

Weak.

Broken.

Barely a whisper.

“Daniel…”

My blood turned cold.

“Don’t let Vanessa see what’s inside.””

I opened my mouth, but no words came.

Because I knew that voice.

Everyone has a voice they could recognize in the dark.

A voice that lives somewhere deeper than memory.

Emma.

My missing wife.

May you like

Behind the door.

And Vanessa went completely pale.
