Chapter 3: The Evidence Under the Roses
The police officers entered the estate ten minutes later.
The engagement party was over.
The champagne glasses remained untouched.
The roses Vanessa had chosen were still arranged perfectly.
But the night had changed.
Detective Harris approached me near the front entrance.
“Mr. Parker?””
“Yes.””
His eyes moved toward Emma.
Then toward Vanessa.
“We need everyone to stay here.””
“What happened?””
He hesitated.
“We found human remains on the property.””
The world went quiet again.
Lily grabbed my hand.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked shocked.
But not surprised.
That detail stayed with me.
Detective Harris noticed too.
“Ms. Cole,” he said.
“You seem unusually calm.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I’m in shock.””
“No,” he replied.
“You’re calculating.””
Her face tightened.
The officer took Emma to another room to get medical attention.
I followed.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
Emma looked terrified.
“I need to tell you everything.””
I stood there.
“Start with why you disappeared.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Vanessa made sure you thought I left.””
I didn’t speak.
Emma took a shaky breath.
“Eight years ago, I discovered Vanessa was stealing money from your company.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She was working with someone inside your business.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Emma looked at me.
“I know what she made you believe about me.””
The room felt colder.
“She told me you were planning to leave me,” Emma continued.
“She said you had another family. She wanted me to disappear.””
“And you believed her?””
“No.””
Emma looked down.
“I confronted her.””
A memory flashed.
The night Emma vanished.
Rain.
Her car abandoned.
Her phone found broken.
The police had called it a possible voluntary disappearance.
Emma whispered:
“She followed me.””
My hands clenched.
“What happened?””
“She attacked me.””
The words landed heavily.
“She brought me here.””
“To the estate?””
Emma nodded.
“Before you bought it.””
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“Daniel, Vanessa knew you would buy this property.””
My heart raced.
“She planned everything.””
Before I could respond, Detective Harris entered.
“We found something else.””
He placed a plastic evidence bag on the table.
Inside was an old necklace.
Emma gasped.
“My necklace.””
The detective looked at me.
“This was found near the remains.””
My stomach twisted.
“Whose remains?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
“Someone connected to Vanessa Cole.””
Vanessa suddenly appeared behind him.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Everyone turned.
She was no longer wearing her engagement ring.
She had removed it.
Detective Harris noticed.
“Where is the ring?””
Vanessa smiled.
“I was overwhelmed.””
Emma stared at her.
“You always did that.””
“What?””
“Remove evidence when you panic.””
Vanessa’s face darkened.
“Be careful.””
Emma stepped forward.
“For eight years, I was locked away because you wanted my husband.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You think he loves you?””
I looked at her.
And for the first time, I didn’t recognize the woman standing there.
She looked at me.
“I was the one who stayed.””
My voice was quiet.
“You lied.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“I protected you.””
“No.””
I looked at Emma.
“You protected yourself.””
The detective’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then his expression changed.
“Mr. Parker…”
I turned.
“What?””
He looked at the evidence bag.
“We identified the remains.””
My heart pounded.
“Who was it?””
Detective Harris lowered the phone.
“The person buried beneath your garden…”
May you like
He paused.
“Was Vanessa Cole’s former fiancé.””
