Chapter 6: The Father I Never Knew

I stared at the birth certificate until the words stopped looking like words.

Richard Cole.

My father.

The same man whose name appeared on Vanessa’s documents.

The same man who had stood beside me at business meetings, shaking my hand, calling me “son” even though I never understood why he said it with such bitterness.

My hands went numb.

“No.””

Michael looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I pushed the folder away.

“That’s impossible.””

Detective Harris remained silent, watching me carefully.

I grabbed the paper again.

The date.

The signature.

Everything was real.

Richard Cole was listed as Vanessa’s biological father.

But my father had died when I was fourteen.

At least, that was what my mother told me.

A heart attack.

A sudden death.

A closed casket funeral.

A lifetime of unanswered questions.

I looked at Michael.

“What are you hiding from me?””

He swallowed.

“Your father wasn’t who you thought he was.””

My jaw tightened.

“You knew?””

“I found out years ago.””

“And you never told me?””

Michael looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I stood up.

“Everyone keeps protecting me by lying to me.””

The police station felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

Eight years ago, I thought my life had fallen apart because my wife left.

Then I learned she had been trapped.

Then I learned Vanessa had built a lie around me.

Now I was discovering my own family had secrets.

Detective Harris opened another file.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“Of course there is.””

He placed several photographs on the table.

The first showed Vanessa standing outside my company building.

The second showed Michael meeting with Richard Cole.

The third showed my father.

Alive.

My heart stopped.

“That’s impossible.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“These photos were taken two years before your father supposedly died.””

I stared at the image.

My father looked younger.

Healthy.

Angry.

And standing beside him was a man I recognized.

Richard Cole.

The man I had trusted.

The man who helped me expand my company.

The man who always told me I reminded him of someone.

I remembered the first time I met him.

I was twenty-six.

I had just inherited a small company from my father’s estate.

Richard had appeared almost immediately.

He told me he admired my ambition.

He offered advice.

He introduced investors.

He became someone I believed was a mentor.

But maybe he was never helping me.

Maybe he was watching me.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Michael looked at me.

“Because Richard believed your father stole something from him.””

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

Detective Harris flipped through the documents.

“We believe Richard Cole and Vanessa were working together.””

I shook my head.

“Father and daughter?””

“Yes.””

“But Vanessa hated me.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“She hated what you represented.””

I looked at the photos again.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, the door opened.

Emma walked in.

Lily was holding her hand.

The moment I saw my daughter, something inside me softened.

No matter what happened next, I knew one thing.

I couldn’t let these people take anything else from her.

Emma sat beside me.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For not telling you everything sooner.””

I was quiet.

She looked at the photograph.

Then her expression changed.

“You know him?””

I pointed at Richard.

“You recognize him?””

Emma’s eyes filled with fear.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

“How?””

Emma looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“Because he was there the night Vanessa took me.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Emma’s voice trembled.

“I thought Vanessa was alone.””

She closed her eyes.

“But she wasn’t.””

I leaned closer.

“Who was with her?””

Emma looked at the photograph.

And whispered:

“Your father.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

“My father was dead.””

Emma shook her head.

“No.””

She reached for my hand.

“Daniel…”

Her voice broke.

“He wasn’t dead.””

The room disappeared.

I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.

Because if Emma was telling the truth…

Then my entire childhood was a lie.

A detective suddenly rushed into the room.

“Mr. Parker.””

I looked up.

“We found Richard Cole.””

My breath caught.

“Where?””

The detective hesitated.

“He came to the station voluntarily.””

“Why?””

The detective looked toward the hallway.

“Because he says he knows where Vanessa hid the evidence that can prove everything.””

I stood.

“Take me to him.””

The detective opened the door.

But before I walked out, Richard’s voice echoed from the hallway.

“Daniel.””

I froze.

May you like

Because after twenty years…

I heard my father’s voice again.
