Amused

Chapter 2: The Secret Room

I pulled the door open.

The smell hit me first.

Dust.

Cold air.

And something that smelled like old medicine.

The hallway lights barely reached inside.

“Emma?”” I whispered.

No answer.

I stepped forward.

Behind me, Vanessa shouted.

“Daniel, stop!””

I turned.

For the first time since I met her, Vanessa wasn’t pretending.

Her face was terrified.

“What?”” I asked.

She swallowed.

“That room is dangerous.””

“Dangerous?””

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“You knew someone was in there.””

She didn’t answer.

That silence told me everything.

Lily pushed past me.

“Mommy!””

I caught her before she entered.

“Stay behind me.””

Inside the room, something moved.

A chair scraped against the floor.

Then a weak voice came again.

“Lily?””

My daughter covered her mouth.

“Mommy?””

The word broke my heart.

I entered the room.

The walls were covered with shelves filled with old boxes. A single lamp flickered in the corner.

And then I saw her.

A woman sitting against the wall.

Thin.

Pale.

Her hair longer than I remembered.

But her eyes…

Her eyes were exactly the same.

Emma.

Lily screamed and ran forward.

“Mommy!””

Emma collapsed into her daughter’s arms, crying.

“My baby.””

I stood frozen.

My entire world had stopped making sense.

Eight years.

Eight years of grief.

Eight years of questions.

Eight years of believing the woman I loved chose to leave.

Emma looked at me.

“Daniel…”

I couldn’t move.

“You’re alive.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“I tried to come home.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

She looked hurt.

“No?””

I shook my head.

“No, because you don’t get to just appear after eight years.””

Lily looked between us.

“Daddy…”

I looked away.

My anger was fighting with something else.

Something painful.

Something that wanted to believe.

Emma reached for my hand.

“I never left you.””

Before I could answer, Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

Her voice was cold.

“Don’t listen to her.””

I turned.

“Get out.””

The guests behind her gasped.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Daniel, she’s manipulating you.””

Emma looked at Vanessa.

“You told him I abandoned him.””

Vanessa smiled.

“You expect him to believe you?””

I stepped between them.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“Yes?””

“Why was my wife locked in this room?””

Her lips parted.

“I didn’t lock anyone in there.””

“Then why did you know she was inside?””

She had no answer.

The silence became unbearable.

Then Vanessa’s expression softened.

“Daniel, think carefully. You found her after eight years in a hidden room. Does that make sense?””

I hated that a small part of me understood the question.

Emma looked down.

“I was trapped.””

“By who?”” I asked.

Emma looked at Vanessa.

And whispered:

“Her.””

Everyone went silent.

Vanessa laughed.

A small, broken laugh.

“That’s insane.””

She walked closer.

“Daniel, I have spent years helping you heal. I raised Lily when her own mother abandoned her.””

Lily shook her head.

“You’re lying.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Lily.””

“No,” my daughter said.

“Mommy told me everything.””

My heart stopped.

“What did she tell you?””

Lily looked toward Emma.

“She said she tried to come back.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Again.

Then the police sirens sounded outside.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa slowly smiled.

“You should ask yourself why the police are here.””

My stomach dropped.

Because I hadn’t called them.

Neither had anyone else.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel…”

May you like

She whispered:

“They came because they found something buried in the garden.””
