Chapter 5: The Brother’s Confession
Michael arrived at the police station an hour later.
He walked in wearing the same concerned expression he had worn for eight years.
The same expression that had fooled me.
“Daniel.””
I didn’t hug him.
He noticed.
“What’s going on?””
I placed my phone on the table.
The message was still there.
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You know something.””
Michael looked away.
“Daniel…”
“Answer me.””
He sat down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
“That’s what Vanessa said.””
His eyes widened.
“You found her?””
I stared.
“You knew?””
Silence.
That was the answer.
My chest tightened.
“How long?””
Michael rubbed his face.
“I thought she was dead.””
“Emma?””
He nodded.
“I didn’t know she was alive.””
“But you knew Vanessa was involved.””
He didn’t answer.
I stood.
“You let me hate my wife.””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
Michael looked at me.
“Vanessa.””
For the first time, I saw real fear in his face.
“She threatened Lily.””
My blood went cold.
“What did she say?””
Michael swallowed.
“She said if I told you the truth, Lily would disappear too.””
The room became silent.
I thought about my daughter.
The little girl who had spent years asking why her mother didn’t love her.
The girl who believed she had been abandoned.
All because adults decided she was easier to control when she was hurt.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
Michael looked down.
“Vanessa planned the entire thing.””
The detective entered quietly and listened.
Michael continued.
“She wanted your company. She wanted your money. But mostly…”
He stopped.
“What?””
“She wanted your life.””
I felt sick.
“She was obsessed with replacing Emma.””
Michael took a deep breath.
“The night Emma disappeared, I followed Vanessa.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you stop her?””
His eyes filled with shame.
“Because I was a coward.””
The words hung there.
Then Detective Harris received a call.
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“Mr. Parker.””
I turned.
“What now?””
His expression was serious.
“We found Vanessa’s private records.””
My stomach dropped.
“What records?””
He held up a folder.
“Documents proving she planned the engagement before Emma disappeared.””
I opened it.
Inside were printed emails.
Photos.
A timeline.
Vanessa had been planning my life.
My future.
My marriage.
Everything.
But one document caught my attention.
A birth certificate.
My hands went cold.
Because the name on it was familiar.
Not mine.
Not Lily’s.
Vanessa’s.
And beneath her name was another name.
The father.
I looked at Michael.
He looked terrified.
“Daniel…”
I stared at the paper.
Because the man listed as Vanessa’s father…
was someone I knew.
Someone who had been at my engagement party.
Someone who had watched me discover the truth.
Someone who had been smiling the entire time.
I whispered:
“Who is Richard Cole?””
Michael closed his eyes.
May you like
And answered:
“Your father.””
