Amused

Chapter 9: The Man Who Never Died

I stood frozen in the old house where I grew up.

The air smelled like dust and forgotten memories.

My father stood in front of me.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

But alive.

For ten years, I had visited his grave.

For ten years, I believed I had lost him.

And now he was standing in front of me.

“Dad?””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

His face broke.

“Richard.””

I wanted to run to him.

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to ask a thousand questions at once.

Instead, I whispered:

“Why?””

My father looked down.

“Because staying dead was the only way to keep you alive.””

I laughed.

The same explanation.

The same excuse.

Everyone had used it.

“Do you all practice saying that?””

His expression fell.

“I deserve your anger.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You watched me grow up without you.””

“I know.””

“You let Mom suffer.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I know.””

For a moment, I saw not the man who betrayed me.

But my father.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who carried me when I was sick.

And that made it worse.

“Tell me everything.””

He nodded.

“Victor’s father was dangerous. When I found proof of his crimes, he tried to kill me.””

“So you disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Then why not come back?””

My father looked away.

“Because the person who helped me disappear was someone I trusted.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I already knew.

“Sarah.””

He nodded.

My heart sank.

“Ethan’s grandmother.””

“Yes.””

The pieces started connecting.

“Then why did Emma know?””

“Because she found my evidence.””

I frowned.

“Evidence?””

My father walked toward a hidden cabinet.

Inside was a box.

He opened it.

Documents.

Photos.

Recordings.

Everything.

“Victor wasn’t working alone.””

I looked at the files.

“Daniel?””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

He looked at me.

“The person who has controlled everything from the beginning.””

Before he could continue, my phone rang.

Emma.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Richard, leave.””

“What?””

“Leave now.””

I looked around.

“How do you know where I am?””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“Because I’m looking at you.””

I turned.

The window.

A figure stood outside.

Watching.

My father grabbed my shoulder.

“We have to go.””

The door exploded open.

Victor walked inside.

Behind him was Daniel.

And behind Daniel...

My mother.

My entire body went cold.

“What is this?””

My mother cried.

“Richard, listen.””

Victor smiled.

“Finally, the whole family is together.””

I stared at him.

“You.””

Victor laughed.

“You always were the slow one.””

My father stepped forward.

“This ends tonight.””

Victor looked amused.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“It begins tonight.””

I clenched my fists.

“You destroyed my family.””

Victor shook his head.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

Then he looked at my father.

“Tell him.””

My father said nothing.

Victor smiled.

“Tell him who really caused the accident.””

I looked at my father.

“What accident?””

The silence answered before he did.

My father closed his eyes.

“Richard…”

My heart dropped.

“No.””

He whispered:

“Your mother was driving that night.””

I stared.

“What?””

“The night you think I died.””

Everything stopped.

My mother began crying.

“I was trying to save him.””

Victor stepped closer.

“Your father didn’t die.””

He pointed at my mother.

“But someone else did.””

I felt sick.

“Who?””

Victor smiled.

“Sarah’s husband.””

I looked at Ethan.

Then at my father.

Then at my mother.

The entire story shifted again.

“My whole life…”

My voice broke.

“My whole life has been built on lies.””

My father looked at me.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“Your life was built on love.””

I wanted to believe him.

But before I could answer, Lily’s voice came through my phone.

She had been listening.

“Dad.””

I froze.

“Lily?””

Her voice shook.

“Don’t trust Victor.””

Victor smiled.

“Smart girl.””

Then Lily said something that made every person in the room go silent.

“Because Uncle Victor didn’t kill Mommy.””

I looked at her through the phone.

“What?””

She whispered:

“He tried to.””

A pause.

“But someone else finished it.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Lily started crying.

“I saw her.””

The phone trembled.

“Mommy’s friend.””

I swallowed.

“Who?””

May you like

Lily whispered:

“Sarah.””
