Amused

Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Door

I spent the entire night staring at the photograph.

Emma.

Alive.

After twelve months of mourning, anger, and unanswered questions, the impossible truth sat in my hands.

My wife had never left me.

She had been hidden.

But one question haunted me.

Why?

Why would she let me believe she was dead?

Why would she let Lily lose her voice?

The answer came when I met her.

The location was an abandoned medical building outside the city.

I went alone.

Or at least, that was what I wanted whoever was watching to believe.

I had Daniel waiting nearby with police contacts ready.

I walked through the dark hallway.

Every step felt heavier.

Then I saw the door.

Room 217.

My hand trembled as I opened it.

A woman sat beside the window.

Older.

Paler.

But unmistakable.

“Richard.””

I stopped breathing.

Emma stood.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then she covered her mouth.

“I’m sorry.””

I wanted to run to her.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted answers.

Instead, I whispered:

“Why?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because Victor would have killed Lily.””

The room went silent.

“He told me if I exposed him, he would take everything from us.””

“You let me bury you.””

“I know.””

“You let our daughter think you were gone.””

Emma broke down.

“I was trying to keep her alive.””

I looked away.

The pain was unbearable.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“Richard, Victor wasn’t working alone.””

I turned.

“What?””

“He had someone helping him.””

“Who?””

Emma looked toward the door.

Fear crossed her face.

Before she answered, the lights went out.

A crash came from the hallway.

Someone was inside.

Emma grabbed my hand.

“You have to leave.””

“No.””

“Richard, listen to me.””

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Confident.

Emma whispered:

“The person who helped Victor is someone you trust more than anyone.””

The door handle moved.

I prepared myself.

The door opened.

And standing there was Daniel.

My assistant.

The man who had helped me search for Emma for a year.

The man who brought me the photograph.

The man who always said he wanted justice.

He looked at Emma.

Then at me.

“I was hoping you’d find her sooner.””

My blood went cold.

“Daniel?””

He sighed.

“I’m sorry, Richard.””

Emma stepped back.

“You.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“I didn’t want it to end this way.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because your wife discovered the truth before I was ready.””

My chest tightened.

“You worked with Victor.””

Daniel didn't deny it.

Instead, he reached into his jacket.

Not for a weapon.

For a file.

He threw it onto the table.

“You think Victor is the villain.””

He looked at Emma.

“But she never told you the whole story.””

Emma’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked afraid of something else.

Daniel opened the file.

Inside was a document.

A birth certificate.

Not Lily’s.

Ethan’s.

I stared at the name.

Then at Emma.

Because written under “Mother” was a name I recognized.

A name that made no sense.

A name that revealed the secret Emma had hidden from me for seven years.

*Emma Carter.*

The boy in the green hoodie was not a stranger.

May you like

He was my wife’s son.

And my silent daughter had known the truth all along.
