Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Silence
Victor stood in my living room like he belonged there.
Maybe that was the most terrifying part.
He didn't look like a criminal.
He looked like my brother.
The same man who used to bring Lily ice cream after school.
The same man who cried at Emma’s funeral.
“Why are you here?”” I asked.
Victor placed the photograph on the table.
“You already know.””
“I know you lied.””
His expression hardened.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“No. I understand enough.””
He stepped closer.
“You think Emma was innocent?””
My anger exploded.
“Don’t you dare talk about her like that.””
Victor sighed.
“Emma made dangerous choices.””
“She was your sister-in-law.””
“She was destroying everything.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Victor looked away.
For the first time, I saw fear.
“Your company wasn’t as perfect as you believed.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So you murdered her?””
His eyes snapped back.
“I didn’t kill Emma.””
“Then where is she?””
He said nothing.
That silence told me everything.
Before I could push further, Ethan appeared behind me.
“You lied to him.””
Victor looked at the boy.
His face changed.
“You.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“You thought I would never find him.””
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
I moved between them.
“What happened that night?””
Ethan looked at me.
“My mother and Emma planned to reveal everything.””
“Everything about what?””
“About Victor stealing money from your company and using fake accounts.””
Victor laughed.
“You believe a child?””
I looked at Ethan.
Then at Victor.
“I believe my daughter.””
That was the first time Victor looked truly afraid.
Later that night, Lily finally told me what happened.
We sat in her bedroom.
The same room where she had spent a year silently drawing pictures.
She held my hand.
“Mommy said don’t talk.””
“Why?””
“Because bad people were listening.””
I felt tears burn my eyes.
“Did you see what happened?””
She nodded.
“She fought with Uncle Victor.””
My heart broke.
“What did you hear?””
Lily swallowed.
“Uncle said Mommy would never leave him.””
The words felt impossible.
Then she whispered:
“He pushed her.””
I closed my eyes.
The room spun.
“But Mommy got up.””
“She ran to me.””
Lily started crying.
“She gave me the rabbit.””
“What happened next?””
She looked terrified.
“He came back.””
“Who?””
“Uncle.””
I held her tighter.
“What did he do?””
She buried her face against me.
“I don’t remember.””
That was the first time I realized her silence wasn't just trauma.
It was protection.
She had been carrying the memory because she thought speaking would put me in danger.
The next day, I reopened the investigation into Emma’s death.
The evidence started appearing.
Missing security footage.
Hidden bank accounts.
Fake reports.
Victor had spent a year controlling the story.
But he made one mistake.
He underestimated Lily.
Three days later, I received an envelope.
Inside was a letter.
No signature.
Only six words.
*“Your wife is still alive.””*
My hands shook.
Because attached to the letter was a hospital photograph.
A woman lying in a bed.
Her face partially hidden.
But I knew that face.
I knew those eyes.
Emma.
Alive.
And underneath the picture was a message:
*“Come alone if you want the truth.””*
Then my phone rang.

A voice whispered:
“Richard... don’t trust Ethan.””
