Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The phone continued ringing in Ethan’s hand.
Mom.
The name glowing on the screen felt like another impossible piece of a puzzle that refused to make sense.
Emma was standing right in front of us.
Alive.
So who was calling?
Ethan looked at her.
“I thought you said you destroyed this phone.””
Emma’s expression changed.
“I did.””
The ringing stopped.
Then immediately started again.
This time, everyone heard it.
I looked at Daniel.
His confidence was gone.
For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.
“Answer it,” I said.
Ethan hesitated.
Emma grabbed his wrist.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because it might not be her.””
Ethan stared at her.
“You know who it is.””
Emma didn’t respond.
That silence was an answer.
I stepped between them.
“Someone explain.””
Emma looked exhausted.
“There are things I never told you because I thought keeping you away from them would keep you safe.””
I shook my head.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No, Emma. You made decisions for all of us.””
My voice cracked.
“You decided what I could handle. You decided what Lily could know. You decided what Ethan could carry.””
She lowered her eyes.
“I know.””
The phone rang again.
Ethan finally answered.
“Hello?””
Everyone listened.
At first, there was only static.
Then a woman’s voice.
“Ethan.””
His face changed.
“Mom?””
Emma stepped closer.
The voice continued.
“Don’t trust anyone in that room.””
My heart dropped.
Ethan looked at Emma.
The woman continued.
“Especially Emma.””
The call ended.
Nobody breathed.
Then Emma whispered:
“That wasn’t Sarah.””
I looked at her.
“Who is Sarah?””
Ethan answered.
“My grandmother.””
I frowned.
“But you said your mother was Emma.””
Ethan looked at the floor.
“She is.””
The confusion became unbearable.
Emma closed her eyes.
“My mother’s name was Sarah.””
I stared.
“What?””
“Ethan’s biological grandmother raised him after I disappeared.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Then who called?””
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
For the next hour, we moved to a secure location.
A private apartment owned by my company.
No cameras.
No employees.
No strangers.
Only us.
For the first time in a year, Lily and Ethan sat together without fear.
I watched them from across the room.
Two children carrying secrets adults had forced upon them.
Lily held her rabbit.
Ethan held his backpack.
They looked at each other like siblings.
Maybe they were.
Finally, Lily spoke.
“Ethan.””
Everyone froze.
She rarely spoke.
Not because she couldn’t.
Because she was afraid.
Ethan smiled gently.
“You remember.””
She nodded.
“You helped me.””
I moved closer.
“What do you mean?””
Lily looked at me.
“Before Mommy left.””
The room became silent.
“She told Ethan to take care of me.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew him before?””
She nodded.
“He came to our house.””
“When?””
“The night Mommy disappeared.””
I felt a wave of anger.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Lily looked down.
“Because Uncle Victor said Daddy would die if I talked.””
I felt my hands shake.
Victor.
Always Victor.
But then Ethan said something unexpected.
“He wasn’t the only one.””
I turned.
“What?””
Ethan opened his backpack.
Inside was a small recorder.
“I found this with my mother’s things.””
He pressed play.
A voice filled the room.
Emma’s voice.
“If anything happens to me, Richard cannot know everything at once.””
My blood ran cold.
The recording continued.
“He needs to believe the enemy is outside the family.””
I looked at Emma.
She looked devastated.
“Why?”” I whispered.
The recording continued.
“Because the person closest to Richard is the person he will never suspect.””
Everyone became still.
Then another voice appeared.
A man’s voice.
A voice I recognized.
My father.
But my father had been dead for ten years.
The recording ended.
I stared at Emma.
“How?””
She looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
Ethan picked up the recorder.
“There’s more.””
He pressed another button.
A second recording began.
My father’s voice.
Clearer this time.
“Emma, if you’re listening to this, then they found out about Lily.””
I stopped breathing.
“They will try to make Richard believe he was betrayed.””
A pause.
Then:
“But the truth is worse.””
The recording crackled.
“Richard’s entire life was built on a lie.””
I felt the room spinning.
Then my father said the final sentence.
“The person you call family is the person who destroyed us.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly, everyone was looking at the same person.
The person who had been with me since childhood.
The person who knew every secret.
The person who had never left my side.
And when the apartment door slowly opened behind us...
May you like
I knew the truth had finally arrived.
Because standing there was the last person I expected to see.
