Chapter 8: The Enemy Inside My Family

My mother walked into the room.

I couldn’t move.

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

“Mom?””

She looked older than I remembered.

Her hair was gray.

Her hands trembled.

But her eyes were the same.

The eyes that watched me grow up.

The eyes that comforted me when my father died.

The eyes of someone I trusted completely.

“Richard,” she whispered.

Emma immediately stepped between us.

“No.””

My mother stopped.

“What are you doing here?””

I looked from Emma to my mother.

“What is happening?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan stepped forward.

“You know her.””

My mother looked at him.

And the fear on her face confirmed everything.

“I thought you were gone.””

Ethan’s voice shook.

“You knew about me.””

My mother looked away.

“I had no choice.””

I laughed.

“No choice?””

The anger I had buried for a year finally exploded.

“My wife disappeared. My daughter stopped speaking. People around me kept secrets. And now you’re standing here telling me you had no choice?””

My mother began crying.

“I was protecting you.””

“Everyone says that.””

I pointed around the room.

“Everyone says they were protecting me.””

I looked at Emma.

“But all they did was leave me alone with the pain.””

Silence.

My mother sat down.

“I need to tell you everything.””

I remained standing.

“Start with the truth.””

She nodded.

“Your father wasn’t killed by an accident.””

My body went cold.

“What?””

“He was murdered.””

The words felt impossible.

My father’s death.

The foundation of my entire life.

A lie.

“Who?””

My mother looked at Victor’s file on the table.

Then she said:

“Victor’s father.””

I froze.

“What?””

“They were partners.””

Emma spoke quietly.

“Your father discovered they were stealing money.””

My mother nodded.

“He planned to expose them.””

I looked at the floor.

All these years.

Every memory.

Every lesson my father taught me.

All connected to a war I never knew existed.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

My mother cried.

“Because your father made me promise.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew if you learned the truth, you would become a target.””

I looked at Emma.

“So you married me because of this?””

She nodded slowly.

“At first.””

The honesty hurt.

“But then I fell in love with you.””

I wanted to hate her.

I wanted to walk away.

But I remembered the woman who sat beside me every night.

The mother who protected Lily.

The person who risked everything.

“Then why disappear?””

Emma looked at Lily.

“Because Victor found out Ethan existed.””

She paused.

“And because he found out Lily had seen something.””

Lily hugged her rabbit tighter.

“What did I see?””

Emma looked at her.

“The night I disappeared, Victor wasn’t alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who was with him?””

Emma looked at me.

“You.””

I froze.

“What?””

“No.””

Emma shook her head quickly.

“Not you.””

She took a breath.

“Someone using your identity.””

The room went silent.

My mother whispered:

“The company had been infiltrated for years.””

I looked at Daniel.

“He knew.””

Emma nodded.

“Daniel knew pieces.””

“Then why betray me?””

Daniel answered from the corner.

“Because I thought exposing you would force the truth out.””

I turned.

“You thought?””

He looked ashamed.

“I was wrong.””

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

A picture appeared.

Victor.

Standing beside a man.

A man wearing my father’s old watch.

Underneath was one sentence:

*“You never found his body because there was no body.””*

My heart stopped.

My father.

Impossible.

Another message appeared.

*“Come to the old Carter estate if you want to know who really died that night.””*

Emma grabbed my arm.

“Don’t go.””

I looked at her.

“I have spent a year chasing ghosts.””

My voice hardened.

“I’m done running.””

My mother stood.

“Richard, listen to me.””

“No.””

I looked at everyone.

“For once, I need the truth.””

I left before anyone could stop me.

The old Carter estate had been abandoned for years.

The house where my childhood memories lived.

The house where my father supposedly died.

When I arrived, the front door was already open.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

Except one thing.

A table.

With a single envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

My father.

Alive.

Standing beside Victor.

And beside them...

A woman.

A woman I recognized.

Because she was the same woman who had called Ethan.

The same woman everyone thought was dead.

On the back of the photograph were five words:

*“Ask your mother about Sarah.””*

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

And a voice whispered:

“Richard.””

I knew that voice.

May you like

Because it belonged to someone who should have been impossible.

“My father?””
