Chapter 2: The Secret My Daughter Carried

I stared at the photograph until the words stopped making sense.

My wife.

Emma.

The woman I buried twelve months ago.

Standing beside a boy I had never seen.

A boy who somehow knew my daughter.

A boy who made Lily speak.

The ballroom that had been full of music and laughter became painfully quiet.

Everyone was waiting for me to react.

But I couldn't move.

“Where did you get this?”” I asked Daniel.

His hands trembled.

“It was inside an envelope delivered to the office this morning.””

“Why didn’t you show me?””

“I thought it was a sick prank.””

I looked at the boy.

He was still standing there.

Calm.

Almost like he had expected this moment.

I walked toward him.

“Your name.””

He hesitated.

“Ethan.””

“How do you know my daughter?””

Ethan looked at Lily.

“She knows.””

I turned to my daughter.

“Lily?””

She immediately looked down.

Her entire body shook.

I had spent a year learning every expression on my child’s face.

This wasn't sadness.

This was terror.

I knelt in front of her.

“Sweetheart, look at me.””

Slowly, she did.

“Did you know him?””

Her lips trembled.

No sound came.

The courage she had found disappeared.

Ethan stepped forward.

“She’s scared because she thinks if she tells you, something bad will happen.””

My anger rose.

“Something bad already happened. Her mother died.””

The boy looked at me with eyes far older than his age.

“Your wife didn’t die.””

The words hit harder than anything I had ever heard.

The crowd gasped.

Someone whispered, “This is insane.””

I grabbed Ethan’s shoulder.

“Don’t say things like that.””

He didn’t fight me.

He simply looked at Lily.

“She saw what happened.””

I released him.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan reached into his backpack.

He pulled out a small stuffed rabbit.

Lily gasped.

The sound was barely audible, but I heard it.

She reached toward it.

I had seen that rabbit before.

It belonged to her.

It was the toy Emma bought for her on Lily’s sixth birthday.

I thought it was buried with Emma.

“How do you have that?”” I asked.

Ethan looked at me.

“Because your wife gave it to me.””

My heart pounded.

“No.””

“She told me to keep it safe.””

“Stop lying.””

“I’m not.””

The room became chaotic.

Guests began whispering.

Cameras started flashing.

I immediately ordered security to close the doors.

No one was leaving.

Not until I knew the truth.

I took Lily upstairs to a private room away from the crowd.

She sat on the sofa holding the rabbit.

I sat beside her.

“Lily, I need you to be brave.””

She looked at me.

“Did Mommy really leave?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

A long silence passed.

Then, barely above a whisper, she said:

“No.””

My entire body froze.

That was the second word she had spoken in a year.

No.

I grabbed her hand.

“Lily... what happened?””

She looked toward the door.

Like she was afraid someone was listening.

Then she whispered:

“Mommy was running.””

“Running from who?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came.

Then Ethan entered the room.

“She can’t say it yet.””

I turned sharply.

“How did you get in here?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Because she needs to know she’s safe.””

I stood.

“You’re going to explain everything.””

Ethan nodded.

“My mother worked for Emma.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Your wife discovered someone inside your company was stealing money and hiding evidence.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“My company?””

Ethan nodded.

“Emma found out who it was.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“The same person who convinced you she died.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

The screen showed a name.

A name I had trusted for years.

Daniel.

But Daniel was standing right beside me.

Slowly, everyone looked at my phone.

Because the caller wasn't him.

It was a recorded message.

I answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Richard Carter... you should have let your daughter stay silent.””

Then the call ended.

And Lily whispered another word.

A name.

May you like

A name that made me realize the enemy had been inside my house all along.

“Uncle...””
