Chapter 6: The Son She Never Told Me About

I stared at the birth certificate until the letters blurred.

Emma Carter.

Mother.

Ethan.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

The boy in the green hoodie wasn’t just someone who knew Lily.

He wasn’t just the person Emma trusted.

He was her son.

A son I never knew existed.

A son she had hidden from me for seven years.

The room felt smaller.

The walls seemed to move closer.

I looked at Emma.

She couldn’t meet my eyes.

“Richard…”

I lifted my hand.

Not because I wanted her to stop talking.

Because I needed one second where the world wasn’t falling apart.

“You had a child.””

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

She swallowed.

“No.””

The answer hurt more than any excuse could have.

Daniel stood near the doorway, watching silently.

He looked almost satisfied.

Like he had been waiting for this exact moment.

“I told you,” Daniel said quietly.

“You never knew the woman you married.””

I turned toward him.

“Don’t pretend you’re doing this for me.””

His expression changed slightly.

“You think I’m the villain?””

“I know you’re involved.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Maybe.””

Emma stepped forward.

“Richard, please. There is so much you don’t understand.””

I laughed.

A bitter, broken sound.

“You’re right. I don’t understand.””

I pointed at Ethan.

“You had a child, and you brought him into our lives without telling me.””

Ethan looked down.

For the first time since I met him, he looked like a scared kid.

Not a mysterious stranger.

Not someone with impossible answers.

Just a child caught between adults.

“I didn’t know how to tell you,” Emma whispered.

“How long?””

Silence.

Then:

“Seven years.””

I closed my eyes.

Seven years.

Seven years of birthdays.

Seven years of family dinners.

Seven years of Lily calling Emma “Mommy.””

And somewhere in the world, there was another child carrying a secret that belonged to all of us.

“Who is his father?”” I asked.

Emma looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“He died before Ethan was born.””

“And why hide him?””

Her face tightened.

“Because of Victor.””

I frowned.

“Don’t use him as an excuse.””

“I’m not.””

She walked toward the window.

“Before I met you, I was working with a financial investigation team. Victor wasn’t just stealing from your company. He was connected to people who destroyed anyone who got too close.””

I remembered the night Emma disappeared.

The rain.

The phone call.

The police report.

Everything I thought I knew.

“Victor found out about Ethan?””

Emma nodded.

“He discovered Ethan existed.””

“Why would he care?””

“Because Ethan was the reason I had evidence.””

Daniel suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

“You still don’t understand.””

His voice was colder now.

“The child wasn’t the secret.””

I looked at him.

“Then what was?””

Daniel opened another file.

Inside were photographs.

My company.

My office.

Emma.

Victor.

And another person.

Me.

But the dates were wrong.

The pictures were from years before Emma and I met.

My stomach tightened.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“The truth.””

He placed the photos on the table.

“You weren’t chosen by Emma by accident.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Emma immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, stop.””

But he continued.

“Your marriage wasn’t a coincidence, Richard.””

I looked at Emma.

She looked away.

That was enough.

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

He picked up the final photograph.

A picture of Emma watching me from across a room years ago.

Before we met.

Before our wedding.

Before Lily was born.

“She knew who you were.””

My heartbeat became louder.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Ask her.””

I looked at my wife.

The woman I had loved.

The woman I mourned.

The woman who had returned from the dead.

“Emma?””

She cried.

“I was supposed to investigate you.””

The words destroyed me.

“Investigate me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because your father wasn’t the businessman you thought he was.””

I stepped backward.

“My father died ten years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then why are we talking about him?””

Emma looked at Ethan.

Then at Lily’s stuffed rabbit sitting on the table.

“Because your father was connected to Ethan’s father.””

The silence that followed felt endless.

Daniel moved toward the door.

“Now you understand why I had to expose everything.””

I stared at him.

“You didn’t expose anything.””

His smile disappeared.

“You still think this is about revenge?””

“Then what is it about?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Making sure the truth comes out before they bury it again.””

Suddenly, Ethan spoke.

His voice was quiet.

But everyone heard him.

“Daniel is lying.””

We all turned.

Ethan looked terrified.

“But not about everything.””

I walked toward him.

“What do you mean?””

He looked at Emma.

Then at me.

“Mom told me never to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.

“The reason she chose you.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“Why?””

Ethan whispered:

“Because you were the only person who could protect Lily.””

I froze.

“Protect her from what?””

Ethan looked toward the dark hallway.

Then he said:

“From the same person who has been watching your family since the beginning.””

The lights flickered.

A phone rang.

Not mine.

Not Emma’s.

Not Daniel’s.

Ethan’s.

He looked at the screen.

His face turned pale.

Because the caller ID showed one name.

May you like

A name that should have been impossible.

*Mom.*
