Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath The Name

Richard Sterling had spent his entire life fighting battles.

But none of them mattered.

Not the billion-dollar negotiations.

Not the hostile takeovers.

Not the corporate wars that made his name famous around the world.

Because every battle before this one had a simple goal.

Win.

This one had only one goal.

Bring Sophie home.

The private helicopter landed on the estate grounds less than twenty minutes after the call ended.

Richard stepped out before the blades stopped turning.

Security teams surrounded the mansion.

Technology experts accessed every camera.

Every entrance.

Every possible exit.

But Richard wasn’t thinking like a businessman anymore.

He wasn’t calculating risks.

He wasn’t protecting assets.

He was a father.

And his daughter was missing.

“Any update?””

The head of security, Marcus, approached quickly.

“We traced the call.””

Richard turned.

“Where?””

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation made Richard’s expression harden.

“Tell me.””

“It came from inside the estate.””

Silence.

Richard looked toward the mansion.

Impossible.

Clara was inside.

But how?

The security system had been compromised.

The staff had been manipulated.

The entire house had been turned against him.

“Show me.””

Marcus opened the tablet.

A map appeared.

The signal came from the old underground section beneath the west wing.

Richard frowned.

“There’s no room there.””

Daniel’s voice came through the communication line.

Richard turned.

“Daniel?””

The security team looked at him.

Daniel appeared on the tablet camera.

His face was bruised.

But he was alive.

Richard exhaled.

“Where is Sophie?””

Daniel looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

Richard’s heart dropped.

“Daniel.””

“I tried.””

“Where is my daughter?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She took Sophie to the old basement.””

Richard froze.

The old basement.

A place he hadn’t seen since he was a child.

A place Edward had forbidden anyone to enter.

Richard remembered asking why.

His father’s answer was always the same.

“Some doors stay closed for a reason.””

Now he knew.

The doors weren’t protecting something.

They were hiding it.

The underground room was colder than Richard remembered.

The walls were covered in old photographs.

Documents.

Boxes.

A lifetime of secrets.

Clara stood in the center of the room.

Sophie sat beside her.

But she wasn’t tied up.

She wasn’t hurt.

She was holding a cup of water.

That somehow made Richard angrier.

Because Clara acted like this was normal.

Like she had the right to be near his daughter.

“Sophie.””

The little girl immediately looked up.

“Daddy!””

She ran toward him.

Richard caught her instantly.

He held her so tightly she laughed softly.

“Daddy, you’re squeezing me.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

He kissed her hair.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

Richard looked at her.

“For every time you waited for me.””

Sophie hugged him.

Then she whispered:

“I knew you’d come.””

Those words almost broke him.

Because she shouldn’t have needed to know.

She should have never doubted.

Richard carried her away from Clara.

Only then did he look at the woman who had torn apart his family.

Clara stood calmly.

“You came.””

Richard’s eyes were cold.

“You took my daughter.””

“I wanted you to understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That you and I are the same.””

Richard almost laughed.

“No.””

Clara smiled.

“You still don’t see it.””

She walked toward the wall of photographs.

“My father created you.””

Richard stared at her.

“What?””

“He spent years shaping you.””

She touched an old picture.

Edward standing with young Richard.

“He wanted a son who could carry his name.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“And?””

Clara looked at him.

“He wanted me to disappear.””

Silence.

“He told my mother I was a mistake.””

Richard felt something shift.

Because despite everything…

he knew Edward was capable of cruelty.

Clara continued.

“When I found out I existed, I thought I finally had a family.””

Her voice became colder.

“But then I found out you existed.””

Richard looked at her.

“You were jealous of me?””

“No.””

She smiled sadly.

“I was jealous of what he gave you.””

Richard looked confused.

“What did he give me?””

“A name.””

The word came out quietly.

“You got to be Richard Sterling.””

She pointed around the room.

“You got the mansion.””

“The company.””

“The respect.””

“I got hidden.””

Richard said nothing.

Because for the first time, he saw something beneath Clara’s anger.

Pain.

Not an excuse.

Not forgiveness.

But pain.

“You hurt Sophie because of that?””

Clara looked away.

“I never wanted to hurt her.””

“She was eating dog food.””

Clara’s expression changed.

“I didn’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I expect you to believe something else.””

She looked directly at him.

“Someone else was controlling the house before I arrived.””

Richard froze.

“What?””

Clara nodded.

“Victor.””

Richard narrowed his eyes.

“Victor works for you.””

“No.””

She laughed softly.

“That’s what you think.””

She walked to a table and picked up a folder.

“Victor contacted me.””

Richard stared.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted Edward’s legacy.””

“And you?””

“I wanted the truth.””

Richard looked at the folder.

“What is it?””

Clara held it out.

“Proof.””

He didn’t move.

“Why give me that?””

“Because Victor betrayed me too.””

A silence followed.

Richard took the folder.

Inside were documents.

Financial transfers.

Emails.

Photos.

Then one document stopped him.

A contract.

Between Victor Hale and Edward Sterling.

Signed twenty years ago.

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“My father.””

Clara nodded.

“Your father was never retired.””

Richard looked up.

“What?””

“He built a second empire.””

Daniel’s voice came through the communication line.

“Richard.””

Richard looked at the tablet.

Daniel continued:

“I found something.””

“What?””

“Victor wasn’t trying to steal Sterling Global.””

Richard looked back at Clara.

“He was trying to destroy it.””

Clara nodded.

“Exactly.””

Richard flipped through the documents faster.

“What was my father planning?””

Clara’s face became serious.

“To erase the Sterling name.””

Richard stopped.

“What?””

She pointed at the contract.

“Edward created Sterling Global with one condition.””

Richard read the line.

His face changed.

A hidden clause.

A transfer agreement.

“If Richard Sterling is removed…”

He stopped.

Clara finished:

“Everything goes to Clara Sterling.””

The room went silent.

Richard looked at her.

“You.””

“Yes.””

“My father built all this…”

“For me.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was filled with disbelief.

“He hated me.””

Clara looked at him.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“He was afraid of loving you.””

Richard froze.

The words hit deeper than he expected.

“He believed loving you made you weak.””

Clara’s voice softened.

“He made the same mistake with me.””

Richard looked down.

For years, he had searched for his father’s approval.

And now he discovered his father’s greatest secret wasn’t hatred.

It was fear.

A terrible kind of love.

The kind that destroyed everything it touched.

Then the lights flickered.

Everyone turned.

Victor’s voice came from the speakers.

“Beautiful story.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Victor.””

A screen on the wall turned on.

Victor appeared.

Smiling.

“Family reunions are always emotional.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You used all of us.””

Victor smiled.

“I used what Edward created.””

“What?””

Victor leaned closer.

“Your father spent his life building a family based on secrets.””

A pause.

“I simply collected them.””

Clara’s face changed.

“Where is Edward?””

Victor smiled.

“Still looking for forgiveness.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“What did you do?””

Victor ignored him.

“Richard, do you know the funny thing?””

Silence.

“You always thought you inherited your father’s empire.””

Victor smiled.

“But you inherited his mistake.””

The screen changed.

A live camera appeared.

Edward.

Standing in an unfamiliar room.

Victor beside him.

Richard froze.

“Dad?””

Edward looked at the camera.

His face was exhausted.

Then he spoke.

“Richard…”

A pause.

“I need to tell you the truth.””

Richard stepped closer.

“What truth?””

Edward looked directly into the camera.

“The reason Clara exists…”

His voice shook.

“Is because she is not the only child I had.””

Richard stopped breathing.

Everyone went silent.

Edward continued:

“And your mother knew.””

The screen cut out.

Leaving only darkness.

May you like

And one final message from Victor:

*“Tomorrow, Richard learns who his real family is.””*
