Amused

Chapter 4: The Brother He Trusted

Richard Sterling had spent his entire life believing there were two things money could never buy.

The first was time.

The second was trust.

He had learned the first lesson when Emily died.

He was learning the second one now.

Because there was only one person in the world who knew exactly how to get inside his head.

One person who had grown up beside him.

One person who had stood next to him when he built Sterling Global from nothing.

His younger brother.

Daniel.

Richard stared at the message on his phone.

*Ask your brother first.*

The words burned into his mind.

“No,” he whispered.

Emily watched him carefully.

“You know who they mean.””

Richard didn’t answer.

“Richard.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“Your brother.””

His jaw tightened.

“Daniel wouldn’t do this.””

Emily’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Not accusation.

Something worse.

Pity.

“You said the same thing about everyone else.””

The words hit him.

Because she was right.

Richard had trusted Mrs. Parker.

Trusted the security team.

Trusted the people he paid to protect his daughter.

And while he was sitting in boardrooms signing contracts worth billions, someone had been destroying his family from the inside.

He looked at Sophie.

She was sitting on the library couch, holding her stuffed rabbit tightly.

Her eyes moved between him and Emily.

Confused.

Scared.

Richard hated that expression.

A child should never look at her own home like it was dangerous.

He turned to Mrs. Parker.

“You’re not leaving this house.””

The nanny looked surprised.

“Richard—”

“You heard me.””

“I need to explain.””

“You’ll explain everything.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Security will escort you to the guest room.””

Mrs. Parker looked toward Emily.

Like she was asking permission.

Richard noticed.

And that small movement told him more than words ever could.

“You’ve been working with her.””

Mrs. Parker looked down.

“I was trying to protect Sophie.””

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“By starving her?””

Tears appeared in the woman’s eyes.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You made choices.””

The room went silent.

Richard called security.

Within minutes, two guards entered the library.

“Mr. Sterling?””

Richard pointed toward Mrs. Parker.

“Take her to the east guest room. Nobody speaks to her without my permission.””

Mrs. Parker looked devastated.

“Richard, please.””

He stared at her.

“You had six months to tell me the truth.””

She had no answer.

When she was gone, Richard turned back.

Only Emily and Sophie remained.

He lowered himself beside his daughter.

“Sweetheart.””

Sophie looked at him.

“Yes?””

“I need to make some calls.””

Her face immediately changed.

Richard noticed.

A small reaction.

A tiny movement.

But he saw it.

“You think I’m leaving?””

She looked away.

“No.””

“Sophie.””

“I know you’re busy.””

The words were quiet.

Too quiet.

Richard felt them cut deeper than any insult.

“I’m not leaving.””

“But you always say that.””

He froze.

The little girl immediately looked guilty.

“I’m sorry.””

Richard closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he took her hand.

“No.””

His voice softened.

“You don’t apologize for telling Daddy the truth.””

Sophie looked at him.

“I promise I’ll come back.””

“When?””

“Before you sleep.””

She hesitated.

“Really?””

“Really.””

Only then did she let go.

Richard stood.

Emily watched the exchange.

“You love her.””

He looked at her.

“She’s my daughter.””

Emily smiled sadly.

“That’s not what I meant.””

Richard didn’t respond.

Because the truth was painful.

He loved Sophie.

But love wasn’t just protection.

It was presence.

And he had failed at that.

Daniel Sterling arrived twenty minutes later.

He didn’t walk into the mansion like a suspect.

He walked in like he owned it.

That was always Daniel’s way.

Confident.

Charming.

Impossible to read.

He entered the library wearing a tailored gray suit, his dark hair perfectly styled, a concerned expression carefully placed on his face.

“Richard.””

His voice carried genuine surprise.

“I heard there was an emergency.””

Richard stood near the fireplace.

“You heard quickly.””

Daniel paused.

Only for half a second.

But Richard noticed.

“I have people everywhere.””

“I know.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“So what happened?””

Richard studied him.

The brother who had held him together after their parents died.

The brother who had helped him turn a failing company into an empire.

The brother who had cried at Emily’s funeral.

Could he really be involved?

“Where were you tonight?””

Daniel frowned.

“What kind of question is that?””

“Answer it.””

A brief silence.

“At home.””

“Alone?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

Richard nodded.

“Interesting.””

“Why?””

“Because someone sent me a message.””

Daniel’s expression remained neutral.

“What message?””

Richard stepped closer.

“One telling me to ask my brother first.””

For the first time, Daniel’s confidence cracked.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“Richard.””

“Did you know Emily was alive?””

The room went completely still.

Daniel didn’t move.

His eyes shifted.

Only for a moment.

But Richard saw it.

“You knew.””

“No.””

The answer came too fast.

Richard’s face changed.

“You didn’t even ask what I meant.””

Daniel recovered quickly.

“I know what you mean.””

“Because you already knew.””

Daniel looked toward Emily.

Then back at Richard.

“This is complicated.””

Richard laughed.

A humorless sound.

“My daughter ate dog food.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“Richard, I didn’t know.””

“But you knew about Emily.””

Silence.

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

Richard felt something inside him break.

“How long?””

Daniel said nothing.

“How long did you know?””

Finally, Daniel sighed.

“Three years.””

Richard stared at him.

Three years.

The same amount of time he had spent mourning.

The same amount of time he had believed he was alone.

“You watched me bury my wife.””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Protect me?””

Richard stepped forward.

“You let me believe she was dead.””

“I didn’t have a choice.””

“There is always a choice.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what happened that night.””

“Then tell me.””

Daniel looked at Emily.

She looked away.

And Richard noticed.

There was history there.

A secret between them.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Richard’s patience disappeared.

“Tell me!””

Sophie, sitting nearby, jumped.

Richard immediately turned.

“Sorry, sweetheart.””

He softened.

But his anger remained.

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Emily wasn’t supposed to survive.””

Richard stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel swallowed.

“The accident wasn’t an accident.””

The words landed heavily.

Richard looked at Emily.

Her face was pale.

“You knew.””

Emily whispered:

“Yes.””

Richard’s chest tightened.

“Then who did this?””

Daniel looked at him.

And for the first time, Richard saw real fear in his brother’s eyes.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Someone who wanted your company.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Richard.””

“No.””

“Listen to me.””

“My company?””

Daniel nodded.

“And everything connected to it.””

Richard looked around the room.

His home.

His daughter.

His family.

Everything he had built.

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then whispered:

“The person who has been running Sterling Global while you were away.””

Richard’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You left someone in charge.””

Richard’s mind raced.

His executives.

His board.

His closest advisors.

Then one name surfaced.

The person who had handled every major decision during his international trips.

The person he trusted with his signature.

The person who knew every weakness in his company.

Richard’s phone suddenly rang.

The screen showed a name.

A name that made Daniel’s face lose all color.

Richard answered.

“Hello?””

A smooth voice spoke.

“Richard.””

He recognized it instantly.

His chief operating officer.

His most trusted executive.

“Where are you?””

Richard didn’t answer.

The voice continued.

“I know Daniel told you things he shouldn’t have.””

Richard’s grip tightened.

“How do you know Daniel is here?””

A pause.

Then a quiet laugh.

“Because I’m the one who asked him to come.””

Richard looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked terrified.

The voice continued.

“And Richard?””

“Yes?””

“Your daughter is not the only thing in that house I can take from you.””

The call ended.

Richard stared at the phone.

Then he looked at Emily.

Because now he understood something.

The person behind all of this wasn’t hiding anymore.

They wanted him to know.

They wanted him angry.

They wanted him to fight.

May you like

And somewhere inside Sterling Global…

someone was already preparing to destroy everything Richard had spent his life building.
