Chapter 7: The Man In The Graveyard
Richard didn’t move.
He couldn’t.
For three years, he had visited that cemetery alone.
Three years of standing in front of a stone engraved with his father’s name.
Three years of telling himself he had finally escaped the shadow of Edward Sterling.
And now that shadow was looking back at him.
Alive.
Smiling.
Waiting.
“Hello, son.””
The words came from the television speakers.
Edward Sterling’s voice.
Older.
Rougher.
But unmistakable.
Sophie buried her face against Richard’s chest.
“Daddy…”
Richard wrapped one arm around her.
With the other hand, he grabbed the remote and shut off the screen.
Nothing happened.
The monitors remained on.
Every screen in the house still showed the cemetery.
Edward standing beside his own grave.
Victor Hale beside him.
Richard’s breathing became slow and controlled.
The way it always became before a fight.
Emily stepped closer.
“Richard.””
He didn’t look at her.
“Get Sophie downstairs.””
Emily hesitated.
“What?””
“Now.””
His voice was firm.
Not angry.
Focused.
Emily looked at Sophie.
Then nodded.
She reached for the little girl’s hand.
But Sophie refused to let go of Richard.
“No.””
Richard looked down.
“Sweetheart.””
“I don’t want to leave you.””
His heart broke.
Because he understood.
She had spent months being told people would leave her.
Now she was afraid every goodbye was permanent.
Richard crouched down.
“I’m not going anywhere.””
“Promise?””
He touched her forehead.
“I promise.””
Sophie looked at him.
Then slowly took Emily’s hand.
Richard watched them leave.
The moment the door closed, his expression changed.
The fear disappeared.
Only rage remained.
He turned toward Daniel.
“Explain.””
Daniel looked shaken.
“I don’t know.””
Richard laughed once.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“My dead father is standing in front of his own grave.””
“I know.””
“Victor Hale is beside him.””
“I know.””
“And you don’t know?””
Daniel had no answer.
Richard walked toward the security panel.
“Lock down the estate.””
Emily’s voice came through the hallway.
“He already got inside.””
Richard stopped.
She returned with her phone.
“He sent something.””
Richard looked at her.
“What?””
Emily showed him the screen.
A message.
From the same unknown number.
*“The house was never yours, Richard.””*
Below it was an old photograph.
A family picture.
Richard.
Edward.
Daniel.
And a woman Richard hadn’t seen in years.
His mother.
But something was different.
On the back of the photograph, written in handwriting he recognized, were three words:
*“The truth remains.””*
Richard stared.
“My mother wrote this.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What?””
Richard turned the photo over.
“I know her handwriting.””
Emily looked confused.
“Your mother?””
Richard nodded.
“She died before my father.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Richard…”
“What?””
Daniel pointed at the picture.
“Look at the date.””
Richard looked.
His eyes narrowed.
The photograph had been taken two years after his mother’s official death.
Impossible.
His mother couldn’t have been there.
Unless…
Unless everything he knew was wrong.
The three of them gathered in Richard’s private office.
A room untouched since Emily’s accident.
The same desk.
The same books.
The same framed picture of Richard, Emily, and baby Sophie.
But now everything felt different.
Like the room belonged to a stranger.
Daniel placed the documents on the desk.
“There’s more.””
Richard looked at him.
“You had more?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you show me?””
“Because I wasn’t sure.””
Richard’s eyes hardened.
“You had one chance to stop keeping secrets.””
Daniel opened another folder.
Inside were medical records.
Richard scanned the pages.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
Daniel looked at Emily.
“It’s about the accident.””
Richard read faster.
His face changed.
“No.””
Emily stepped closer.
“What?””
Richard handed her the papers.
She read them.
Then her hands began shaking.
“These aren’t mine.””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
The records showed Emily Sterling.
But the medical history was wrong.
The blood type.
The injuries.
Even the fingerprints.
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Someone replaced the records.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“To make it look like Emily died.””
Silence.
Emily stared at the pages.
“So my death was planned.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Richard felt a wave of anger.
Someone had not just hurt his family.
They had rewritten reality.
They had changed documents.
Manipulated police.
Controlled employees.
And they had done it while he mourned.
“Victor.””
Daniel nodded.
“Victor had access to everything.””
Richard stood.
“No.””
Both of them looked at him.
“Victor didn’t do this alone.””
Emily’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
“Because Victor knows business.””
Richard looked at the documents.
“He understands money.””
Then he looked toward the window.
“But this…”
He pointed at the fake records.
“The house.””
“The staff.””
“Sophie.””
“This wasn’t just a business attack.””
His voice became colder.
“This was personal.””
A sound interrupted them.
A security alarm.
Richard immediately turned.
The main entrance camera flashed.
Someone was entering the estate.
Daniel reached for his phone.
“The guards?””
“No response.””
Richard looked at the screen.
The front gate camera showed an approaching car.
Black.
No license plate.
The door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Richard froze.
Because he recognized her.
Not from memory.
From Sophie’s description.
The woman who knew Emily’s song.
The woman who told Sophie that Richard didn’t know the truth.
Emily whispered:
“Who is that?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Because the woman was walking directly toward the mansion.
The security system should have stopped her.
The cameras should have tracked her.
The guards should have intercepted her.
But nothing happened.
She walked through the front door.
Like she owned the place.
Then every speaker in the house activated.
A woman’s voice filled the rooms.
“Richard.””
He looked at the office speakers.
The voice continued.
“You spent your whole life believing you were the one in control.””
Richard’s hands tightened.
“Who are you?””
A soft laugh.
“You really don’t remember?””
The woman appeared on the security monitor.
Standing in the hallway.
Looking directly into the camera.
Emily covered her mouth.
Because she knew her.
Richard saw the reaction.
“You know her?””
Emily whispered:
“Yes.””
Her face went pale.
“She was my sister.””
Richard stared.
“Your sister?””
Emily nodded slowly.
“The sister everyone told me died when I was young.””
The woman smiled at the camera.
“Hello, Emily.””
A pause.
Then she looked directly at Richard.
“Hello, brother-in-law.””
Richard’s blood ran cold.
Because he finally understood.
The person who had destroyed his family wasn’t trying to steal his company.
She was trying to take his life.
Piece by piece.
The woman stepped closer to the camera.
“My name is Clara.””
She smiled.
“And Richard…”
The screen flickered.
Then displayed a file.
A birth certificate.
Richard looked at it.
His face drained of color.
Because the name written on the document wasn’t Clara’s.
It was Edward Sterling’s.
And the relationship line said:
*Daughter.*
Richard whispered:
“No…”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
Richard stared at the screen.
His father hadn’t returned alone.
He had returned with the child he never knew existed.
And she had been inside his family’s secrets from the beginning.
Then Clara spoke again.
“Your father didn’t abandon me, Richard.””
The lights flickered.
“He abandoned you.””
The screen went black.
May you like
And on every monitor in the house appeared one final message:
*“Tomorrow, you will learn why your father chose me over you.””*
