Chapter 8: The Daughter He Hid
Richard Sterling had spent his entire life believing he was the heir to everything.
The company.
The name.
The legacy.
But standing in his office at midnight, staring at a blank security monitor, he realized something terrifying.
Maybe he had never been the chosen one.
Maybe he had only been the replacement.
The thought followed him like a shadow.
Edward Sterling had always been a difficult man to understand.
Richard remembered the cold dinners.
The endless business lessons.
The way his father could look at a room full of executives and make everyone silent without saying a word.
But he also remembered something else.
A question he had buried for years.
Why had his father always looked disappointed when he looked at him?
Richard had spent his childhood trying to earn Edward’s approval.
Top grades.
Perfect decisions.
Successful deals.
Every achievement felt like another attempt to finally hear the words:
“I’m proud of you.””
But Edward never said them.
Not once.
Now Richard knew why.
Maybe Edward had been saving that pride for someone else.
His hidden daughter.
Clara.
The woman who had walked into his home like she belonged there.
The woman who had terrified Sophie.
The woman who knew secrets that should have died with his father.
Richard stood silently.
Emily watched him carefully.
“Richard.””
He didn’t answer.
“Richard.””
He finally looked at her.
“How much did you know about Edward?””
Emily shook her head.
“Nothing about Clara.””
“But you knew something was wrong.””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
Emily looked down.
“I knew your father was hiding things.””
Richard laughed quietly.
“Everyone knew that.””
“No.””
Her voice was soft.
“I mean before the accident.””
Richard turned.
“What?””
Emily took a breath.
“Two weeks before I was supposedly killed, I saw Edward arguing with someone.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“He was in a private office. The door was open slightly.””
Richard stepped closer.
“What did you hear?””
Emily hesitated.
Then whispered:
“He said, ‘My son can never know.’”
The room became silent.
Richard stared at her.
“My son.””
Emily nodded.
“I thought he meant you.””
“He did.””
“Maybe.””
Richard looked at Daniel.
“What do you know?””
Daniel was quiet.
Too quiet.
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“You know something.””
Daniel sighed.
“There was another reason I never wanted you digging into your father’s past.””
“Why?””
“Because every time someone looked too closely…”
Daniel stopped.
“What?””
“They disappeared.””
Richard felt a chill.
“Who?””
“Employees.””
“Witnesses.””
“People connected to Sterling family history.””
Richard shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You built a company on your father’s foundation.””
“Yes.””
“Did you ever ask where the foundation came from?””
Richard said nothing.
Because he hadn’t.
He had spent years expanding Sterling Global.
He had never questioned how Edward built it.
The money was always there.
The connections were always there.
The power was always there.
But where did it begin?
At 2:17 a.m., Richard received another message.
This time, it wasn’t from Clara.
It was from Edward.
*“Come alone.””*
Below it was an address.
A location outside the city.
Richard immediately stood.
“No.””
Emily looked at him.
“You’re going.””
“Yes.””
“It’s a trap.””
“Probably.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Then I’m coming.””
“No.””
Richard looked at him.
“If this is about my father, I need answers from him.””
Daniel shook his head.
“And if he wants you dead?””
Richard looked toward the hallway.
Where Sophie was sleeping.
That was the only reason he hesitated.
Not fear.
Never fear.
Responsibility.
Emily noticed.
“You’re thinking about Sophie.””
Richard nodded.
“She already lost enough.””
Emily’s expression softened.
“Then don’t go alone.””
Richard looked at her.
“I thought you said it was a trap.””
“It is.””
“Then why help me?””
Her eyes filled with emotion.
“Because for three years, I lost my daughter.””
She swallowed.
“And I lost you.””
Richard looked away.
The words hurt.
Not because they were cruel.
Because they were true.
“I’ll take security.””
Emily nodded.
“Good.””
Daniel looked uncertain.
“Richard…”
Richard turned.
“I need you to stay here.””
“Why?””
“Because Sophie trusts you.””
Daniel froze.
Richard continued:
“Right now, she needs someone she knows.””
Daniel slowly nodded.
The abandoned Sterling warehouse sat on the edge of the city.
A place Richard hadn’t visited in fifteen years.
It was where Edward had stored old company records before moving everything into the new headquarters.
The building looked forgotten.
Broken windows.
Rusting metal.
A place where memories went to die.
Richard stepped inside.
“Edward?””
His voice echoed.
No answer.
He walked deeper.
Then lights turned on.
One by one.
At the end of the warehouse stood his father.
Older.
Different.
But alive.
Richard stopped.
For a moment, neither man spoke.
Then Edward smiled.
“You look like me.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“I wish I didn’t.””
The smile disappeared.
“Still angry.””
“You’re alive.””
“Yes.””
“You let me bury you.””
Edward looked away.
“I had reasons.””
Richard laughed.
“Everyone has reasons.””
He stepped forward.
“My daughter ate dog food because of your secrets.””
For the first time, Edward’s expression changed.
“Sophie?””
“Yes.””
His father looked genuinely surprised.
“She was hurt?””
Richard stared.
“You don’t get to pretend you care.””
Edward looked down.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
Richard’s voice rose.
“You destroyed my family.””
Edward looked at him.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I protected my family.””
Richard froze.
“From what?””
Edward stared into the distance.
“From people who wanted what belonged to me.””
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“Your company?””
“My legacy.””
A bitter laugh escaped Richard.
“You mean your money.””
Edward’s face hardened.
“You never understood.””
“No.””
Richard stepped closer.
“You never explained.””
Silence.
Then Edward said:
“Clara was born before you.””
Richard felt the words hit him.
“Your daughter.””
“Yes.””
“Who is her mother?””
Edward looked away.
“A woman I couldn’t protect.””
Richard stared.
“So you abandoned her?””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“I tried to save her.””
Richard shook his head.
“Then why hide her?””
Edward looked at him.
“Because of your mother.””
Richard froze.
“My mother?””
Edward nodded.
“She knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That Clara existed.””
The wind moved through the broken windows.
Richard felt lost.
“My mother knew she had a sister?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Edward’s face changed.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of you?””
A long silence.
Then Edward said:
“Yes.””
Richard felt his anger shift.
Because that was something he never expected.
His father admitting fear.
“What did you do?””
Edward didn’t answer.
Richard stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
Finally, Edward whispered:
“I chose wrong.””
The words were almost impossible to hear.
Richard stared.
“What does that mean?””
Edward looked at him.
“I chose Clara over you.””
Richard felt like the air had been knocked out of him.
All his childhood memories.
Every cold moment.
Every disappointment.
Every time he wondered why his father never loved him enough.
Suddenly it had an answer.
Edward continued:
“But I didn’t know Clara would become like this.””
Richard frowned.
“What?””
Edward’s face darkened.
“She believes she was robbed of everything.””
“She was.””
Edward looked at him sharply.
“Careful.””
Richard stopped.
“Why?””
“Because Clara doesn’t want revenge.””
A pause.
“She wants replacement.””
Richard’s blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
Edward looked toward the warehouse entrance.
Then whispered:
“It means she doesn’t want your company.””
“She wants your life.””
Before Richard could respond, his phone rang.
Daniel.
Richard answered immediately.
“Daniel?””
Only silence.
Then a sound.
A struggle.
Richard’s expression changed.
“Daniel?””
A woman’s voice answered.
Clara.
“Your brother was always loyal.””
Richard froze.
“What did you do?””
She laughed softly.
“Nothing yet.””
The call moved.
He heard Sophie crying.
Richard’s entire body went cold.
“Where is my daughter?””
Clara whispered:
“She wanted to meet her family.””
Richard’s grip tightened around the phone.
“Don’t touch her.””
“Richard…”
Her voice became calm.
“You still don’t understand.””
A pause.
“You spent your whole life trying to become your father.””
Richard heard Sophie crying in the background.
“But I spent mine becoming the daughter he actually wanted.””
The call ended.
Richard stood frozen.
Then Edward spoke behind him.
And for the first time, his father sounded afraid.
“She has Sophie.””
Richard turned.
Edward’s face was pale.
“Clara always takes what she believes should have been hers.””
Richard looked toward the darkness outside.
His voice became dangerously quiet.
“Then she made one mistake.””
Edward looked at him.
“What?””
Richard picked up his phone.
Called every security team he had.
And said four words:
“Bring my daughter home.””
Because Clara had spent years learning how to destroy the Sterling family.
But she had forgotten one thing.
Richard Sterling was no longer the boy begging for his father’s approval.
May you like
He was a father now.
And nobody took his child from him.
