Chapter 5: The Man Behind The Empire
Richard Sterling had always believed enemies came from outside.
Competitors.
Rivals.
People who wanted his money, his company, his reputation.
He had spent years building walls around himself.
Security systems.
Private investigators.
Legal teams.
A fortress disguised as a mansion.
But the person who had entered his life the deepest had never needed to break through a wall.
Because Richard had opened the door himself.
He trusted him.
That was the part that hurt.
Richard stood in the library, staring at the phone screen after the call ended.
Nobody spoke.
Not Daniel.
Not Emily.
Not even Sophie.
The silence was heavier than any argument.
Finally, Richard looked at his brother.
“Start from the beginning.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Richard…”
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
But everyone in the room knew what that meant.
“No more secrets.””
Daniel looked toward Sophie.
“She shouldn’t hear this.””
Richard immediately moved beside his daughter.
“She already heard enough secrets while I wasn’t here.””
That sentence made Daniel look away.
Because there was no defense.
Not anymore.
Richard crouched beside Sophie.
“Sweetheart, I need you to go upstairs with the guards.””
Her eyes widened.
“Why?””
“Because Daddy needs to talk about adult things.””
She looked nervous.
“Are you leaving again?””
The question stopped him.
Richard took her hand.
“No.””
He looked directly into her eyes.
“I’m not leaving.””
She searched his face.
Then slowly nodded.
Richard called one of the guards.
“Take her to my bedroom.””
Sophie stood.
Then paused.
She looked at Emily.
The woman who claimed to be her mother.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then Emily whispered:
“Goodnight, Sophie.””
The little girl hesitated.
“Goodnight.””
It was only one word.
But Richard saw the pain in Emily’s eyes.
A mother hearing her daughter speak to her like a stranger.
After Sophie left, Richard closed the library doors.
Then he turned.
“Now talk.””
Daniel sat down slowly.
For the first time in years, he didn’t look like the confident Sterling brother.
He looked exhausted.
“When Emily’s accident happened, I was the first person called.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“I knew you were at the hospital.””
“Yes.””
“Everyone knew.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. Not everything.””
Richard remained silent.
Daniel continued.
“The car went off the road because the brakes failed.””
Richard frowned.
“The police said it was an accident.””
“They were wrong.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Because someone changed the evidence.””
Richard’s stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation told Richard everything.
“You know.””
Daniel nodded.
“I suspected.””
“Suspected?””
Richard’s anger rose.
“My wife almost died.””
“I know.””
“My daughter lost her mother.””
“I know.””
“You knew something was wrong, and you said nothing?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He pointed toward the staircase.
“She was eating dog food.””
Daniel looked down.
“I know.””
Richard froze.
“What?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“I found out recently.””
“Recently?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Two weeks ago.””
The room went cold.
Richard stepped back.
“Two weeks ago?””
“Yes.””
“And you still said nothing?””
Daniel’s voice broke slightly.
“I was trying to find proof.””
Richard stared at him.
“While my daughter was suffering?””
Daniel had no answer.
That hurt more than any excuse.
Emily finally spoke.
“Richard.””
He looked at her.
“Don’t defend him.””
“I’m not.””
Her voice was quiet.
“I’m saying you need to know everything.””
Richard looked between them.
“Fine.””
He crossed his arms.
“Everything.””
Emily took a deep breath.
“After the accident, I woke up in a private clinic.””
Richard’s face changed.
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
She looked down.
“When I woke up, I had injuries. I couldn’t remember everything clearly.””
Richard stared.
“You had amnesia?””
“Partly.””
“Then why didn’t anyone contact me?””
Emily’s eyes filled with pain.
“Because someone convinced me you were the reason I was in danger.””
Richard froze.
“What?””
“They showed me documents.””
“What documents?””
“Financial records.””
Daniel spoke quietly.
“They were fake.””
Emily nodded.
“They made me believe you wanted control of everything.””
Richard looked at her.
“You thought I tried to kill you?””
Her silence answered.
The pain on his face was immediate.
Emily stepped forward.
“I was wrong.””
Richard looked away.
“But you believed it.””
“I was scared.””
“So you stayed away.””
“Yes.””
“For three years.””
Emily’s voice broke.
“Yes.””
Richard didn’t know which emotion was stronger.
Anger.
Pain.
Relief.
Because the woman he loved was alive.
But she had spent years believing he was her enemy.
“Then why come back now?””
Emily looked toward the staircase.
“Because of Sophie.””
Richard frowned.
“What about her?””
“I saw what was happening.””
“When?””
His eyes narrowed.
“A month?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Emily hesitated.
“At the estate.””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“You were here?””
“Yes.””
“And you watched?””
“No.””
Her voice became desperate.
“I tried to get close.””
Richard said nothing.
“Mrs. Parker helped me.””
Richard looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because she knew the truth.””
Daniel continued.
“She discovered someone had been controlling the household.””
Richard shook his head.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Your COO.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“Victor Hale.””
The name filled the room.
Victor Hale.
The man who had been with Sterling Global for twelve years.
The man Richard trusted with confidential deals.
The man who knew every company weakness.
The man who had convinced Richard to take more international trips.
“He arranged your schedule,” Daniel said.
Richard slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
“He encouraged you to spend more time away.””
Richard remembered.
The late-night calls.
The emergency meetings.
The constant reminders that the company needed him abroad.
Victor always said the same thing:
“Family is important, Richard. But your company needs you.””
Richard’s hands curled into fists.
“He isolated me.””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
Emily added:
“And while you were gone, he started changing things.””
Richard looked at her.
“What things?””
“Your employees.””
“Your accounts.””
“Your security.””
Each word landed harder.
Daniel pulled a folder from his briefcase.
“I collected this.””
Richard opened it.
Inside were documents.
Transfers.
Emails.
Internal reports.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then stopped.
One page.
A payment.
A large payment.
To a private account.
The name attached made his blood freeze.
Because it belonged to someone he knew.
Someone he had trusted.
Someone inside his family.
Richard looked up.
“Daniel.””
His brother went pale.
“Yes?””
“This account.””
Richard held up the document.
“Whose is it?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Richard’s voice lowered.
“Tell me.””
Finally, Daniel whispered:
“It belongs to your father.””
Richard froze.
“My father has been dead for ten years.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
A terrible silence followed.
Then Richard’s phone buzzed.
Another message.
Unknown number.
This time, there was a video attached.
He opened it.
The footage showed his office.
Victor Hale was standing behind Richard’s desk.
But he wasn’t alone.
A second person stood beside him.
Richard stared at the screen.
Because he recognized the person immediately.
His heart dropped.
The message below appeared.
*“You’re looking for the person who betrayed you.””*
A second line appeared.
*“You should look closer at the person who raised you.””*
Richard stopped breathing.
Because the person standing beside Victor wasn’t an employee.
Wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone from his own bloodline.
Someone he thought had been gone forever.
And then the video zoomed in.
Revealing the face of the person who had been helping Victor destroy his family.
Richard whispered one word.
May you like
“No…”
Because the person on the screen was his father.
