Amused

Chapter 10: The Family He Chose

Richard Sterling had spent his entire life searching for the truth.

He thought the truth was hidden in boardrooms.

In financial records.

In business deals.

In the decisions made by powerful men.

He was wrong.

The truth was hidden in a family that had spent decades hurting each other.

And the hardest truth of all was this:

Everyone had been protecting something.

Except Sophie.

She had been the only innocent person in a house full of secrets.

Richard stood in the underground room, staring at the blank screen where his father had disappeared.

Nobody spoke.

Not Clara.

Not Emily.

Not Daniel.

The silence felt like the moment before a storm.

Finally, Richard looked at Clara.

“Where is Victor?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You worked with him.””

“I thought I did.””

Richard studied her.

For the first time since she entered his life, he saw something different.

Not anger.

Not revenge.

Fear.

“Clara.””

She looked at him.

“You said you wanted the truth.””

“Yes.””

“Then you need to understand something.””

Her voice lowered.

“Victor was never loyal to anyone.””

Richard frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“He didn’t care about my father.””

“He didn’t care about me.””

She looked around the room.

“And he never cared about you.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then what did he want?””

Clara answered quietly.

“Control.””

Richard looked at the documents in his hand.

The hidden contracts.

The financial transfers.

The years of manipulation.

Victor wasn’t trying to take Sterling Global.

He was trying to own the people who controlled it.

Richard’s phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Victor.””

A laugh came through.

“I knew you would figure it out eventually.””

Richard’s voice was cold.

“Where is my father?””

“Safe.””

“Where?””

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

Richard’s grip tightened.

“What’s the right one?””

Victor paused.

Then said:

“Why did Edward Sterling spend his whole life lying?””

Richard looked at Clara.

Then Emily.

Then Daniel.

“Tell me.””

Victor sighed.

“Your father built his empire on a secret.””

“What secret?””

“The Sterling family was never supposed to belong to you.””

Richard felt a familiar anger rise.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Victor continued:

“Your father had a daughter before you.””

Richard looked at Clara.

“I know.””

“No.””

Victor laughed softly.

“You know about Clara.””

A pause.

“You don’t know about the other one.””

The room went silent.

Richard’s face changed.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another piece of a family he never truly knew.

“Who?””

Victor didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Come to the old Sterling tower.””

Richard immediately knew.

The original company building.

The place where Edward started everything.

“Come alone.””

Richard almost laughed.

“You still think I follow your rules?””

Victor’s voice became sharper.

“You should.””

“Why?””

“Because I have your father.””

A pause.

“And because I know something about Sophie.””

Richard’s entire body went still.

“What?””

Victor’s voice lowered.

“Something even Clara doesn’t know.””

The call ended.

Richard stood frozen.

Emily saw his expression.

“What did he say?””

Richard looked at her.

“He knows something about Sophie.””

Everyone became tense.

Clara stepped forward.

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel immediately moved toward the exit.

“We’re going.””

Richard nodded.

“No.””

They stopped.

“Richard.””

“I said no.””

He looked at Sophie’s picture on his phone.

His daughter smiling.

The only person in his life who never asked him for power.

Only love.

“I’m ending this tonight.””

The old Sterling tower had been abandoned for years.

The building stood in the center of the city like a forgotten monument.

The place where Edward built his first company.

The place where Richard spent his childhood visiting his father.

The place where he learned that success mattered more than happiness.

When Richard entered the lobby, the lights turned on.

Victor stood waiting.

Older than Richard remembered.

But still confident.

Still calm.

Still believing he was the smartest person in the room.

“You came.””

Richard looked around.

“Where is my father?””

Victor smiled.

“You’re just like him.””

“Answer me.””

“You always rush to protect people.””

Richard stepped closer.

“That’s what separates me from him.””

Victor’s smile faded.

“You think you’re better?””

“No.””

Richard looked directly at him.

“I think I’m different.””

Victor walked slowly around him.

“Your father would hate that answer.””

Richard ignored him.

“Where is he?””

Victor pointed toward the elevator.

“Upstairs.””

Richard didn’t move.

“What about Sophie?””

Victor looked amused.

“You really think I would hurt a child?””

Richard said nothing.

Because he remembered Sophie eating from a dog bowl.

He remembered every person who claimed they were protecting her.

And every person who failed.

Victor noticed.

“You don’t trust anyone anymore.””

“No.””

Richard’s voice was quiet.

“I trust actions.””

For the first time, Victor looked uncertain.

Then Richard smiled slightly.

“And your actions have told me everything.””

The elevator doors opened.

Inside was Edward.

Alive.

Weak.

But standing.

Richard froze.

His father looked older than ever.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man.

“Richard.””

The sound of his name from his father’s mouth felt strange.

Richard stepped inside.

Edward looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

Richard stopped.

Those words.

The words he waited his entire life to hear.

And now they felt different.

“You should have said that years ago.””

Edward lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

“Why?””

Edward looked toward Victor.

“Because I was afraid.””

Richard laughed sadly.

“You?””

“Yes.””

The old man nodded.

“I built an empire because I was afraid of losing everything.””

Richard stared.

“And you lost your family instead.””

Edward closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Silence.

Then Richard asked:

“Who is the other child?””

Edward looked shocked.

“Victor told you?””

“Answer me.””

Edward sighed.

“There is no other child.””

Richard froze.

“What?””

“Victor created that lie.””

“But Clara…”

Edward looked toward the doorway.

“She is my daughter.””

Richard said nothing.

“But there was never another.””

“Why would Victor say that?””

Edward’s face became serious.

“Because he wanted you to doubt everything.””

The pieces finally connected.

Victor didn’t need people to believe one story.

He needed them to believe nothing.

A family that didn’t trust each other was easy to control.

Richard looked at Victor.

“You manipulated all of us.””

Victor smiled.

“I revealed what was already broken.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

He stepped forward.

“You found broken pieces and made sure they stayed broken.””

Victor’s expression changed.

Because for the first time, Richard wasn’t reacting.

He was seeing clearly.

Victor reached into his coat.

Daniel’s voice suddenly came through Richard’s earpiece.

“Richard.””

Richard smiled slightly.

“You thought I came alone.””

Victor’s face changed.

Security teams entered from every entrance.

Victor looked around.

“How?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because unlike my father, I learned something.””

“What?””

Richard glanced at Edward.

“Trust isn’t weakness.””

Victor was arrested minutes later.

But the hardest conversation was still waiting.

Three weeks later, the Sterling estate felt different.

Not bigger.

Not richer.

Just warmer.

The kitchen that once felt cold was filled with sunlight.

A real breakfast sat on the table.

Fresh fruit.

Pancakes.

Chocolate milk.

Sophie sat laughing.

Actually laughing.

Richard watched her from across the room.

And for once, he wasn’t thinking about meetings.

Or numbers.

Or the company.

Emily sat beside Sophie.

Still rebuilding their relationship.

Still learning how to become a mother again.

But trying.

That mattered.

Daniel visited often.

Their relationship wasn’t perfect.

There were still wounds.

Still conversations they needed to have.

But for the first time in years, they were honest.

Even Clara remained.

Not as an enemy.

Not as someone who stole his place.

But as family.

A complicated family.

A damaged family.

A family learning how to heal.

Richard stood near the window.

His father’s words still haunted him.

“I was afraid.””

For years, Richard thought strength meant never admitting fear.

Now he knew better.

Strength was admitting when you were wrong.

Strength was showing up.

Strength was sitting beside your child when they needed you.

Sophie ran toward him.

“Daddy!””

He opened his arms.

She jumped into them.

“Are you busy?””

Richard smiled.

“No.””

“But you have work.””

He shook his head.

“Work will still be there tomorrow.””

She smiled.

“Promise?””

Richard held her tighter.

“Promise.””

Years later, people would still talk about Richard Sterling.

The billionaire.

The businessman.

The man who rebuilt Sterling Global.

But the thing he was proudest of was not a company.

Not a fortune.

Not a legacy.

It was a quiet morning in a warm kitchen.

A little girl eating breakfast at the table.

And the fact that when she looked up and asked,

“Daddy, are you staying?””

He could finally answer:

“Yes.””

May you like

And this time…

he meant it.
