Amused

Chapter 6: The Father Who Never Left

Richard Sterling watched the video three times.

Not because he didn’t understand what he was seeing.

Because his mind refused to accept it.

The man standing beside Victor Hale was older.

Thinner.

His hair was almost completely gray.

But Richard knew that face.

He had spent twenty-five years looking at it.

The sharp eyes.

The straight posture.

The expression that always made people feel like they were being judged.

His father.

Edward Sterling.

A man who was supposed to be dead.

A man whose funeral Richard had attended.

A man he had watched disappear beneath the ground.

Richard lowered the phone slowly.

Nobody spoke.

The entire room felt like it was holding its breath.

Finally, Emily whispered:

“Richard…”

He didn’t answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the frozen image.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Daniel looked at him.

“Richard.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“My father died.””

Daniel’s expression was painful.

“I know what you saw.””

“You don’t.””

Richard looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

His voice cracked.

“I watched him die.””

Nobody moved.

Richard rarely talked about his father.

Not because the memories were gone.

Because they were too sharp.

Edward Sterling had been a powerful man.

A businessman.

A perfectionist.

A man who believed weakness was something to be eliminated.

Richard grew up learning one lesson:

Success was earned.

Love was earned.

Respect was earned.

Nothing was given.

When Richard was seventeen, Edward told him something he never forgot.

“People don’t follow kindness, Richard. They follow strength.””

At the time, Richard believed him.

Until he met Emily.

She taught him that strength wasn’t about controlling people.

It was about protecting them.

And now someone was using his father’s face to tear everything apart.

Or worse…

His father had never left.

Richard looked at Daniel.

“You knew?””

Daniel shook his head immediately.

“No.””

“Did you know he was alive?””

“No.””

“Then why does this exist?””

Daniel had no answer.

Richard turned toward Emily.

“Did you know?””

Emily looked shocked.

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“I thought Edward died too.””

Richard stared at the phone.

“Then someone wants us to believe he’s alive.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Maybe.””

“Maybe?””

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“Victor is too smart to create a fake video without a reason.””

Daniel looked down.

“That’s true.””

Richard walked toward the window.

Outside, the Sterling estate looked peaceful.

The gardens.

The fountain.

The lights.

Everything looked normal.

That was the terrifying part.

A person could destroy a family while the world outside saw nothing.

“Find Victor.””

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

“Find him.””

“Richard, if he knows we’re investigating—”

“He already knows.””

Richard turned around.

“He sent the message.””

A silence followed.

Richard looked at Emily.

“And he wanted me to see this.””

Emily nodded.

“Which means?””

“He wants me distracted.””

Daniel stood.

“From what?””

Richard looked toward the stairs.

His expression changed.

“Sophie.””

The three of them immediately understood.

Richard found Sophie sitting on his bed.

She was holding the stuffed rabbit.

The room was filled with toys.

Hundreds of them.

Gifts from him.

Gifts she barely touched.

Because toys didn’t replace a father.

Richard sat beside her.

“Hey.””

She looked up.

“Are you done?””

“Yes.””

“Are you leaving now?””

The question hurt.

“No.””

She looked surprised.

“You’re staying?””

“Yes.””

“Even with work?””

Richard smiled sadly.

“Work can wait.””

Sophie looked down at the rabbit.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Was Mommy really gone?””

Richard froze.

He hadn’t expected that question.

“Why do you ask?””

“Because Mrs. Parker said Mommy was a secret.””

Richard felt his stomach tighten.

“What else did she say?””

Sophie hugged the rabbit.

“She said grown-ups lie when they’re scared.””

Richard looked at his daughter.

That was painfully true.

“Sometimes they do.””

“Did you lie?””

He swallowed.

“I thought Mommy was gone.””

“That’s not a lie.””

“No.””

He brushed her hair away from her face.

“But I should have looked harder.””

Sophie studied him.

“Are you mad at Mommy?””

Richard looked toward the doorway.

Emily stood there silently.

He hadn’t noticed her enter.

He looked back at Sophie.

“No.””

“Are you mad because she left?””

Richard was quiet.

Then he answered honestly.

“Yes.””

Sophie nodded.

“I was too.””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

Richard saw it.

But he didn’t look away.

Because this was Sophie’s truth.

Not theirs.

“She told me stories about Mommy,” Sophie said.

Richard frowned.

“Who?””

“The lady.””

“What lady?””

Sophie hesitated.

“The one who came before Mommy.””

Richard’s body went still.

“What do you mean?””

Sophie looked at the floor.

“Before Mommy came home.””

Richard leaned closer.

“Someone else came here?””

She nodded.

“When?””

“A few months ago.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Who was she?””

Sophie shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Did she tell you her name?””

Another shake.

“But she said something.””

Richard’s voice lowered.

“What?””

Sophie looked at him.

“She said Daddy doesn’t know the truth.””

A cold feeling moved through the room.

“What truth?””

Sophie’s fingers tightened around the rabbit.

“She said Mommy didn’t disappear because of the accident.””

Richard looked at Emily.

Emily looked confused.

“What?””

Sophie continued.

“She said Mommy disappeared because someone wanted her gone.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard felt the pieces shifting.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another layer.

“How did she know?””

Sophie shrugged.

“She knew everything.””

“What everything?””

The little girl whispered:

“She knew Mommy’s favorite song.””

Emily went pale.

Richard noticed.

“What song?””

Emily didn’t answer.

“Sophie?””

The little girl began humming softly.

A melody.

A simple one.

Richard had never heard it before.

But Emily had.

Because her face changed instantly.

“That song…”

Richard looked at her.

“What?””

Emily’s voice trembled.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

She looked at Sophie.

“Because I only sang that song once.””

Richard felt a chill.

“When?””

Emily swallowed.

“The night before the accident.””

The room went silent.

Sophie looked confused.

“Whoever taught me knew it.””

Richard stood slowly.

“Who taught you?””

Sophie pointed toward the hallway.

“The woman.””

Richard’s heart began pounding.

“What woman?””

Before Sophie could answer, the lights in the mansion suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Sophie screamed.

Richard grabbed her immediately.

“It’s okay.””

But it wasn’t.

Because a second later…

the emergency lights turned on.

And every screen in the house activated.

The bedroom television.

The security monitors.

The smart mirrors.

All of them displayed the same image.

A live camera feed.

The Sterling family cemetery.

Richard stared.

On the screen was a man standing in front of Edward Sterling’s grave.

A man holding a shovel.

Then the camera zoomed in.

A message appeared beneath the image.

*“You buried the wrong man.””*

Richard’s blood turned cold.

The man on the screen slowly removed his coat.

Revealing his face.

Edward Sterling.

Alive.

And standing beside him was Victor Hale.

Then Edward looked directly into the camera.

As if he knew Richard was watching.

May you like

And he smiled.

“Hello, son.””
