Amused

Chapter 9: The Man Who Never Left

Mariana had always believed ghosts belonged to old houses and forgotten memories.

She never imagined one could return with a voice on the phone.

The warehouse remained silent after the call ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.

A man who had been considered dead for years had just demanded control over a company he supposedly no longer had any connection to.

And somehow, he had known exactly where to find them.

Mariana looked at Rodrigo.

He was still staring at the phone in her hand.

Not with anger.

Not with pride.

With fear.

Real fear.

"Who is he?""

Rodrigo didn't answer.

Mariana stepped closer.

"Rodrigo.""

His eyes lifted.

For once, he looked at her like an equal.

Not a wife.

Not someone beneath him.

Someone standing beside him in the same storm.

"My father.""

The answer was quiet.

Mariana felt a chill.

"You knew he was alive.""

Rodrigo immediately shook his head.

"No.""

"Then why are you afraid?""

He looked away.

And that was the answer.

"You knew something.""

Rodrigo closed his eyes.

"Not everything.""

Mariana almost laughed.

"Nobody ever knows everything.""

The bitterness in her voice made him look at her.

She continued:

"That's what everyone says right before they reveal another secret.""

Camila remained near the table, watching them carefully.

"This changes everything.""

Mariana turned.

"Explain.""

Camila looked at Rodrigo.

"He built his entire identity around one thing.""

"What?""

"Escaping his father.""

Rodrigo said nothing.

Camila continued.

"Mateo Altamirano was not just a businessman.""

Her expression darkened.

"He was ruthless.""

Mariana looked at Rodrigo.

"Like you?""

The words hurt him.

But he didn't argue.

"Different," Rodrigo said.

"How?""

He stared at the floor.

"My father didn't care if people loved him.""

A pause.

"He only cared if they feared him.""

The warehouse suddenly felt colder.

Mariana thought about the voice.

Calm.

Patient.

Someone who didn't need to threaten because he already believed he owned the outcome.

"Why did everyone think he was dead?""

Rodrigo sat down slowly.

"My mother told me.""

"Your mother?""

"She said there was an accident.""

"What kind of accident?""

"A car crash.""

Mariana looked at him.

"And you believed her?""

"I was twenty.""

The answer came with shame.

"I wanted to believe her.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Rodrigo continued.

"When my father disappeared, the company was drowning.""

Mariana remembered the story.

The story Rodrigo told everyone.

The young man who saved a dying company.

The founder who rebuilt everything.

"He told people he created Altamirano Sistemas.""

Camila shook her head.

"No.""

Rodrigo looked at her.

"What?""

"You created the version everyone saw.""

She opened the folder.

"But the foundation was always his.""

Mariana looked at the documents.

Everything was becoming clearer.

Rodrigo was not the beginning.

He was a continuation.

A chapter in someone else's story.

"Why would your father hide for twenty years?""

Rodrigo's expression changed.

"Because he wasn't hiding.""

A pause.

"He was waiting.""

The answer disturbed everyone.

"For what?""

Rodrigo looked at Mariana.

"For someone to bring him back.""

She felt a cold feeling in her chest.

"Me?""

Nobody answered.

And that terrified her.

An hour later, they left the warehouse.

Not together.

Not trusting each other enough for that.

Mariana rode with Camila.

Rodrigo followed in a separate vehicle.

Alejandro disappeared before they reached the main road.

He had refused to explain anything.

Another secret.

Another unanswered question.

Mariana watched the city pass through the window.

"How long did you know?""

Camila looked ahead.

"About Rodrigo's father?""

"About everything.""

Camila was quiet.

"Longer than you.""

Mariana nodded.

"I figured.""

"I'm sorry.""

Mariana looked at her.

"Are you?""

Camila swallowed.

"Yes.""

"Then why did you lie?""

The question was simple.

The answer wasn't.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of Rodrigo?""

"No.""

Camila looked at her.

"Of becoming like him.""

That surprised Mariana.

"What?""

"My father lost everything because powerful people decided his truth was inconvenient.""

She paused.

"I spent years believing the only way to fight people like Rodrigo was to become smarter than them.""

"And?""

"And I became someone who manipulated the person I claimed to protect.""

The honesty was unexpected.

Mariana looked away.

She wanted to forgive her.

But forgiveness was not the same as trust.

Not anymore.

"What happens now?""

Camila sighed.

"Now Mateo Altamirano comes for the documents.""

Mariana looked down at the folder.

"No.""

Camila turned.

"What?""

Mariana held it tightly.

"He comes for the company.""

A pause.

"But the documents are only the beginning.""

"What do you mean?""

Mariana looked out the window.

For the first time, she wasn't thinking about surviving.

She was thinking strategically.

The thing everyone had underestimated.

Her mind.

"Everyone has been fighting over ownership.""

Camila listened.

"But nobody has asked the most important question.""

"What question?""

Mariana looked at her.

"Why did my father put the company in my name?""

Silence.

Because that was the question nobody had answered.

Not Rodrigo.

Not Doña Rebeca.

Not even Don Esteban.

When Mariana arrived at her father's house, Don Esteban was waiting.

He looked exhausted.

But not surprised.

"I assume you know.""

Mariana walked into the study.

"Yes.""

Her father closed the door.

"Then you know about Mateo.""

"I know he is alive.""

A pause.

"And I know you knew.""

Don Esteban looked down.

"Yes.""

The disappointment in Mariana's eyes hurt him.

"Why?""

Her father sat.

"Because I made a promise.""

"To who?""

"To Mateo.""

Mariana froze.

"You knew him?""

"Yes.""

"How?""

Don Esteban looked at the old photographs on his desk.

"Before Rodrigo.""

A silence.

"Before me?""

"Yes.""

Mariana felt like she was hearing about a completely different life.

"Tell me everything.""

Her father took a deep breath.

"Mateo Altamirano was a brilliant businessman.""

"That's not what I asked.""

"No.""

He nodded.

"But it matters.""

He looked at her.

"Because brilliant people can still become dangerous.""

"How?""

"He believed ownership was everything.""

A pause.

"He didn't see employees as people. Partners as people. Family as people.""

Mariana thought of Rodrigo.

"Like father, like son.""

Her father didn't answer.

"Then why did you work with him?""

"Because I thought I could stop him.""

Mariana almost smiled.

"Everyone thinks they can.""

The words hurt because they were true.

Don Esteban continued.

"When Rodrigo came into the picture, I saw a chance.""

"A chance?""

"To change the company.""

"Through Rodrigo?""

"Yes.""

Mariana shook her head.

"You used him.""

"No.""

Her father looked sad.

"I believed in him.""

A pause.

"That was my mistake.""

The admission was heavy.

"What does Mateo want?""

Don Esteban looked at her.

"The company.""

"Why now?""

"Because he knows the ownership agreement has activated.""

Mariana frowned.

"Activated?""

Her father nodded.

"When you left Rodrigo.""

She froze.

"What?""

"The agreement had a condition.""

"What condition?""

Her father looked directly at her.

"The company would transfer fully to you if Rodrigo ever endangered the business through personal misconduct.""

Mariana felt the room spin.

"He knew.""

"Who?""

"Rodrigo.""

"No.""

"Ximena?""

"No.""

Her father looked away.

"Only I knew.""

Mariana stared.

"Then how did Mateo know?""

Silence.

A terrible silence.

Then her father's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

Mariana noticed.

"Who is it?""

He didn't answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, he picked up.

"Hello.""

Everyone heard the voice through the speaker.

Mateo Altamirano.

"Esteban.""

Her father's expression hardened.

"Mateo.""

A cold laugh.

"Still protecting her?""

Don Esteban stood.

"You stay away from my daughter.""

Mateo's voice remained calm.

"Your daughter?""

A pause.

"You mean the woman who owns everything I built?""

Mariana stepped closer.

"Why me?""

The line went quiet.

Then Mateo answered.

"Because you were the only person Rodrigo loved more than power.""

Rodrigo, who had arrived moments earlier and stood at the doorway, froze.

Mateo continued:

"And because I needed to know if my son would choose the company...""

A pause.

"Or the woman who could take it away from him.""

Mariana looked at Rodrigo.

He looked back.

And for the first time, she saw something she never expected.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Regret.

Mateo spoke again.

"Tomorrow morning, Mariana, you will come to my office.""

"No.""

Her father looked at her.

Mateo smiled through the phone.

"Then I will release the final document.""

Mariana's heart stopped.

"What document?""

A pause.

"The one proving your father built this entire plan twenty years ago.""

She felt cold.

"What plan?""

Mateo answered:

"The plan to make you the most powerful person in Mexico's business world.""

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Because Mariana finally understood.

She had spent her entire life believing she was caught in other people's battles.

But she wasn't.

May you like

She was the reason the battle existed.

And tomorrow, everyone would find out what happened when the woman they underestimated finally took control.
