Chapter 2: The Call That Started the Collapse
Mariana had imagined this moment a thousand times.
Not the pain.
Not the humiliation.
Not the fear.
The moment when she would finally tell her father the truth.
For years, she had hidden Rodrigo Altamirano’s cruelty behind expensive smiles and carefully chosen words.
When friends asked why she seemed tired, she said she was working too hard.
When her family noticed Rodrigo becoming colder, she said he was under pressure.
When her own reflection looked unfamiliar, she blamed stress.
She had protected his reputation more fiercely than she had protected herself.
But now, standing in the middle of their ruined marriage, with Rodrigo watching her like he was trying to understand how the woman he controlled had suddenly become someone else, Mariana felt no need to explain.
Her father already knew.
Parents always knew more than their children believed.
"Ruin his life.""
The words remained between them.
On the other end of the phone, Don Esteban Salvatierra did not answer immediately.
That silence was heavier than anger.
Mariana gripped the phone tighter.
"Papa?""
Finally, she heard his voice.
"Tell me everything.""
Rodrigo stepped forward.
"Give me that phone.""
Mariana turned away.
For the first time in years, she ignored him completely.
It was such a small action.
But it frightened him more than shouting ever could.
"Mariana," Rodrigo warned.
She continued speaking to her father.
"He's been hiding money transfers through companies connected to Ximena Duarte.""
Rodrigo's expression changed.
Ximena looked between them.
"What is she talking about?""
Mariana kept her eyes on Rodrigo.
"Properties purchased through fake consulting agreements. Personal expenses charged as business investments. Investor reports that don't match the actual accounts.""
Rodrigo's face became pale.
"Stop.""
Her father heard him.
"Is Rodrigo there?""
Mariana looked at her husband.
"Yes.""
A pause.
Then Don Esteban said quietly:
"Put me on speaker.""
Mariana did.
The sound of her father's voice filled the apartment.
"Rodrigo Altamirano.""
Rodrigo stood still.
He had known Don Esteban for fifteen years.
He had shaken his hand.
Asked for advice.
Called him "father" when he wanted approval.
Now he looked like a child caught stealing.
"Mr. Salvatierra," Rodrigo said carefully.
The confidence was gone.
"I think there has been a misunderstanding.""
"No," Don Esteban replied.
His voice was calm.
That was what made it dangerous.
"There was a misunderstanding when my daughter married a man who thought her kindness was weakness.""
Ximena rolled her eyes.
"How dramatic.""
Mariana turned toward her.
The woman who had spent months whispering poison into Rodrigo's ears was finally nervous.
Good.
"Who is that?"" Don Esteban asked.
"Ximena Duarte," Mariana answered.
A brief silence followed.
Then:
"The woman receiving company money?""
Ximena's face changed instantly.
Rodrigo looked at her.
"What?""
She looked away.
"Rodrigo, don't listen to her.""
Mariana watched him.
That was the first crack.
Not because he believed Mariana.
Because for the first time, he questioned Ximena.
"What does he mean?"" Rodrigo asked.
Ximena stood.
"Nothing.""
"Then answer.""
Her confidence disappeared.
"I don't know what he is talking about.""
Mariana almost laughed.
Almost.
Because Rodrigo had always loved believing he was surrounded by loyal people.
He had never understood that people who worship your power often disappear when the power begins to fall.
"Papa," Mariana said, "what happened with the auditors?""
"I made a call.""
Rodrigo's eyes narrowed.
"You did what?""
Don Esteban ignored him.
"The documents Mariana gave me six months ago were enough to begin an investigation.""
Rodrigo stared at his wife.
Six months.
That number hit him.
"You planned this?""
Mariana looked at him.
"No.""
The answer confused him.
"Then why?""
"Because I hoped I was wrong.""
The room became silent.
That hurt him more than anger would have.
Because Mariana was not enjoying his downfall.
She was mourning the fact that it had been necessary.
"I spent six months hoping you would fix it," she continued.
"I waited for you to admit something was wrong.""
Rodrigo shook his head.
"You were spying on me.""
"No.""
She stepped closer.
"I was trying to save you.""
He laughed bitterly.
"Save me?""
"Yes.""
Her voice became stronger.
"From yourself.""
Rodrigo looked away.
The city lights reflected in his eyes.
For years, Mariana had seen him as a man chasing success.
Now she finally understood.
He wasn't chasing success.
He was running from the fear that he was never enough.
And he had destroyed everyone around him trying to prove otherwise.
Don Esteban spoke again.
"Rodrigo, listen carefully.""
The businessman straightened.
Even now, he respected Mariana's father.
"Tomorrow morning, investigators will arrive at Altamirano Sistemas.""
Rodrigo's face tightened.
"No.""
"Your board members have already been contacted.""
"You can't do that.""
"I can.""
Don Esteban paused.
"And I did.""
Rodrigo walked toward the phone.
"Mariana, stop this.""
She looked at him.
There it was.
The first request.
Not an order.
A request.
Interesting.
"You want me to stop?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because this will destroy everything.""
Mariana stared at him.
"The company?""
His silence answered.
She nodded slowly.
"That's what I thought.""
"Mariana—"
"No.""
Her voice cut through the room.
"You don't care that you hurt me.""
Rodrigo opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
"You care because now you might lose something.""
Ximena suddenly moved toward Rodrigo.
"Don't let her do this.""
Mariana looked at her.
"Do what?""
Ximena's expression hardened.
"Destroy the man you love.""
The words were almost funny.
Almost.
Mariana looked at Rodrigo.
"The man I loved disappeared a long time ago.""
She turned away.
The woman who entered this apartment years ago believing she was building a future was gone.
Only someone stronger remained.
Rodrigo's phone suddenly vibrated.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Messages flooded the screen.
He looked down.
His hands began shaking.
"What is it?"" Ximena asked.
He didn't respond.
Mariana saw the fear return.
"What happened?""
Rodrigo slowly looked up.
"The board meeting.""
"What about it?""
"They moved it.""
"To when?""
He swallowed.
"Tomorrow morning.""
"That's normal," Ximena said quickly.
"No.""
His voice cracked slightly.
"It was supposed to be next month.""
Mariana watched him.
"Why did they move it?""
Rodrigo stared at the messages.
Then he read one aloud.
"The board has requested an emergency review of all financial activity under Rodrigo Altamirano's executive authority.""
Ximena went silent.
Rodrigo looked at Mariana.
"Who else did you tell?""
"No one.""
"Liar.""
The old Rodrigo returned for a moment.
The accusation.
The arrogance.
The belief that everyone was beneath him.
Mariana didn't react.
"I told my father.""
"You think he can save you?""
She looked at him.
"No.""
A pause.
"He can save everyone you were about to destroy.""
Rodrigo clenched his fists.
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
Mariana smiled faintly.
It was the first genuine smile he had seen from her all night.
"I spent ten years watching you build an empire.""
She picked up her handbag.
"I spent six months watching you destroy it.""
She walked toward the elevator.
Rodrigo followed.
"Where are you going?""
She pressed the button.
"Home.""
His expression changed.
"This is your home.""
Mariana looked around the penthouse.
The place where she had cried alone.
The place where she had apologized for things she didn't do.
The place where another woman had sat comfortably while her marriage was destroyed.
"No.""
She shook her head.
"This was your kingdom.""
The elevator doors opened.
Before stepping inside, she looked back one final time.
Rodrigo stood there.
Powerless.
Confused.
Afraid.
Exactly how she had felt for years.
"Tomorrow," Mariana said quietly, "you will learn something important.""
Rodrigo stared at her.
"What?""
She stepped into the elevator.
"Money can buy silence.""
The doors began closing.
"But it cannot buy forgiveness.""
The doors shut.
For the first time in fifteen years, Rodrigo Altamirano stood alone.
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID appeared.
His chief financial officer.
He answered immediately.
"What?""
The voice on the other end was shaking.
"Mr. Altamirano...""
Rodrigo looked toward the elevator.
"Speak.""
A long pause.
Then the words that changed the future of his empire arrived.
"Someone just leaked the private contracts to the media.""
Rodrigo froze.
"What contracts?""
The CFO hesitated.
"The ones involving Ximena Duarte.""
Across the city, Mariana sat in the back seat of her father's car, staring out the window.
She didn't know the full extent of what would happen next.
She didn't know how far Rodrigo's betrayal went.
She didn't know that the woman beside him was hiding a secret even Rodrigo didn't know.
May you like
But five minutes after her call, the first piece of his empire had fallen.
And by morning, the world would discover that Rodrigo Altamirano was not the man he pretended to be.
