Chapter 7: The Friend Who Played the Long Game
Mariana did not sleep that night.
She sat alone in the guest room of her father’s house, staring at the same photograph on her phone.
Camila Reyes.
Her assistant.
Her friend.
The woman who knew which flowers Mariana liked.
The woman who remembered her coffee order.
The woman who had sat beside her after every argument with Rodrigo.
The woman who had told her, again and again:
"You deserve better than this.""
Now Mariana wondered.
Was that sympathy?
Or strategy?
The hardest betrayals were never the ones that came from enemies.
Enemies prepared you to defend yourself.
Friends convinced you that you didn't need armor.
At six in the morning, Mariana finally stood.
She had spent the night feeling every emotion possible.
Anger.
Confusion.
Sadness.
But underneath all of it was something stronger.
Determination.
She needed answers.
Not guesses.
Not assumptions.
Answers.
She called Camila.
The phone rang once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then voicemail.
Mariana stared at the screen.
She called again.
This time, Camila answered.
"Hello.""
Her voice sounded calm.
Too calm.
Mariana closed her eyes.
"Where are you?""
A pause.
"Why?""
"Because I want to see you.""
Another pause.
"Mariana—"
"No.""
Her voice hardened.
"Do not explain. Do not apologize. Just tell me where you are.""
Silence.
Then Camila said:
"The old Altamirano warehouse.""
Mariana's grip tightened around the phone.
The same place where Daniel had been attacked.
The same place where the documents disappeared.
"Are you alone?""
A longer pause.
"Yes.""
Mariana knew her too well.
Camila was lying.
But she didn't say anything.
"I'll be there in thirty minutes.""
"Mariana.""
"What?""
"Don't come with your father.""
The warning caught her attention.
"Why?""
"Because this conversation is between us.""
The call ended.
Mariana stood in the middle of the room.
She had spent her entire life trusting people who told her they were protecting her.
Now she would trust no one.
Not until she knew the truth.
The old Altamirano warehouse sat on the edge of an industrial district, far away from the polished towers and luxury buildings Rodrigo loved.
It was where the company began.
Before the investors.
Before the fame.
Before the expensive cars.
A place filled with old machines, dusty shelves, and memories Rodrigo had almost erased.
Mariana entered slowly.
The metal door creaked behind her.
"Camila?""
No answer.
She walked deeper inside.
The smell of dust and old paper filled the air.
Then she heard footsteps.
Camila appeared from behind a row of shelves.
For a moment, Mariana saw the same woman she had known for years.
The same dark hair.
The same gentle eyes.
The same person who had brought her soup when she was sick.
Then Mariana remembered the photograph.
The stolen documents.
The lies.
And the illusion disappeared.
"You took them.""
Camila looked down.
"Yes.""
No denial.
No excuse.
That hurt more.
Mariana laughed quietly.
"I almost wish you had lied.""
Camila looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because then I could tell myself I was wrong about you.""
A painful expression crossed Camila's face.
"I never wanted to hurt you.""
Mariana stepped closer.
"But you did.""
"I know.""
"Why?""
Camila remained silent.
That silence was worse than any answer.
"Camila.""
Finally, she spoke.
"Because someone had to stop him.""
Mariana frowned.
"Stop Rodrigo?""
"Yes.""
"And you thought stealing documents was the way?""
Camila looked away.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
Camila took a deep breath.
"Rodrigo Altamirano destroyed everyone who got in his way.""
Mariana shook her head.
"He destroyed me.""
"No.""
Camila looked at her.
"He almost destroyed you.""
The difference was strange.
"What does that mean?""
Camila walked toward an old wooden table.
She placed a folder on it.
Not the missing documents.
Something else.
"Do you remember when Rodrigo fired his first financial manager?""
Mariana frowned.
"Seven years ago.""
"Do you remember why?""
"He said the man was stealing.""
Camila nodded.
"He wasn't.""
Mariana froze.
"What?""
"He discovered the first illegal transfers.""
The room became quiet.
"You knew?""
"Yes.""
"How?""
Camila looked at the floor.
"Because he was my father.""
Mariana stared at her.
The words didn't make sense.
"What?""
"My father was Rafael Reyes.""
Mariana searched her memory.
The name sounded familiar.
Then she remembered.
The financial manager.
The man Rodrigo accused of corruption.
The man whose reputation was destroyed.
The man who disappeared from the business world overnight.
"Your father...""
"Was innocent.""
Mariana felt a chill.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I needed to know if you were like him.""
"Like who?""
"Like Rodrigo.""
The accusation shocked her.
"What?""
Camila's eyes filled with emotion.
"Powerful people protect each other, Mariana.""
"That is not who I am.""
"I know that now.""
A bitter smile appeared.
"But I didn't know five years ago.""
Mariana looked at the folder.
"What is that?""
"The truth.""
She opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Emails.
Financial records.
Documents.
Proof.
Not just of Rodrigo's actions.
But of something much bigger.
Mariana flipped through the pages.
Her face changed.
"These are from before I joined the company.""
"Yes.""
"How did you get them?""
Camila hesitated.
"Your father.""
Mariana looked up sharply.
"My father?""
"He knew.""
"About your father?""
"About everything.""
The room seemed to shrink.
"Then why didn't he expose Rodrigo?""
Camila looked at her.
"Because of you.""
Mariana shook her head.
"No.""
"Yes.""
"Stop saying that.""
Camila's voice softened.
"Your father believed Rodrigo would destroy himself eventually. He wanted you away from the damage.""
Mariana stared.
"That doesn't make sense.""
"It does.""
Camila stepped closer.
"Your father knew Rodrigo loved you.""
Mariana looked away.
"He also knew Rodrigo's ambition was stronger.""
A painful silence.
"So everyone knew.""
Camila didn't answer.
"Everyone knew except me.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
Mariana's expression hardened.
"Don't.""
"What?""
"Don't use that word.""
Camila looked hurt.
"Why?""
"Because everyone who hurt me used it.""
That silenced her.
For the first time, Camila looked ashamed.
"I am sorry.""
Mariana looked at the evidence.
"Why take the ownership records?""
Camila hesitated.
Then she answered.
"Because Ximena was going to destroy them.""
"What?""
"She doesn't want the company.""
Mariana frowned.
"Doña Rebeca said she did.""
"She was wrong.""
"Then what does Ximena want?""
Camila looked toward the warehouse entrance.
Her voice dropped.
"Revenge.""
Mariana felt a cold wave pass through her.
"Against who?""
Camila looked directly at her.
"Your father.""
The answer stunned her.
"Why?""
"Because twenty years ago, your father ruined Ximena's family.""
Mariana shook her head.
"No.""
"You don't know the whole story.""
"Then tell me.""
Camila took a breath.
"Ximena's father was one of the original investors in Altamirano Sistemas.""
Mariana looked at the documents.
"Another investor?""
"Yes.""
"What happened?""
Camila's expression darkened.
"Your father removed him.""
"Why?""
"Because he discovered Rodrigo was hiding financial problems.""
Mariana felt her heartbeat increase.
"So my father knew?""
"Yes.""
"About Rodrigo?""
"Yes.""
"And he still helped him?""
Camila nodded.
"Because he believed he could control the damage.""
Mariana stepped back.
The truth was becoming impossible to carry.
Everyone had made choices.
Everyone had justified them.
Everyone believed they were protecting something.
And everyone had left Mariana in the dark.
"Where is Ximena now?""
Camila looked at her.
"That is the problem.""
"What?""
"She has the final documents.""
"What final documents?""
Camila opened another file.
Inside was one page.
A signature.
A date.
A name.
Mariana read it.
Then she froze.
Because the signature at the bottom belonged to someone she never expected.
Her father.
Don Esteban Salvatierra.
And beside his signature was another.
Rodrigo Altamirano.
But the document was dated fifteen years ago.
The year before Mariana met Rodrigo.
The title at the top made her blood run cold.
*TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP AND CONTROL AGREEMENT.*
Mariana looked up.
"What is this?""
Camila's voice was barely audible.
"The agreement that proves Rodrigo never owned Altamirano Sistemas.""
Mariana stared at the page.
"Then who did?""
Camila looked at her.
"You.""
The warehouse became completely silent.
Mariana felt like the ground had disappeared beneath her.
"What?""
Camila swallowed.
"Before you married Rodrigo, your father transferred ownership into a trust.""
"For who?""
Camila looked at the document.
"For his daughter.""
Mariana's hands began trembling.
"My father made me the owner?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Camila whispered:
"Because he knew one day Rodrigo would become dangerous.""
Before Mariana could speak, the warehouse lights suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
A sound came from the entrance.
Someone had opened the door.
Mariana froze.
Camila turned.
Then a familiar voice echoed through the darkness.
"Mariana.""
Her heart stopped.
Rodrigo.
And he sounded different.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Desperate.
"You need to leave.""
Mariana couldn't see him.
"Why?""
A pause.
Then Rodrigo said:
"Because Ximena knows you have the documents.""
The lights flickered back on.
But Rodrigo was not alone.
Standing behind him was someone Mariana never expected.
Someone holding a gun.
Someone she had trusted her entire life.
May you like
And Rodrigo whispered:
"Your father sent him.""
