Chapter 3: The Empire Built on Lies
The first thing Mariana noticed when she woke up was that she was not afraid.
For ten years, mornings had been the hardest part of her day.
She would open her eyes and immediately remember what she had to do.
Check Rodrigo’s schedule.
Prepare for meetings.
Review documents.
Smile beside him at events.
Pretend the man sleeping next to her was still the man she married.
But that morning, she woke up in her childhood bedroom at her father’s house, surrounded by old books, faded photographs, and the smell of coffee drifting from downstairs.
And for the first time in years, she felt something she had almost forgotten.
Peace.
Then her phone began ringing.
Not once.
Not twice.
Constantly.
Mariana reached for it on the nightstand.
Twenty-three missed calls.
Sixteen messages.
News alerts covering the screen.
Her stomach tightened.
She opened the first article.
*ALTAMIRANO SISTEMAS FACES EMERGENCY INVESTIGATION AFTER FINANCIAL IRREGULARITIES SURFACE.*
She stared at the headline.
Not because she was surprised.
Because it was real.
For months, she had collected evidence quietly.
Every suspicious payment.
Every false invoice.
Every contract signed without proper approval.
She had never wanted to destroy Rodrigo.
She wanted to stop him before he destroyed himself.
But Rodrigo had chosen pride over honesty.
And now everyone would see what she had seen.
The bedroom door opened.
Her father walked in carrying two cups of coffee.
Don Esteban Salvatierra was seventy years old, but he carried himself like a man who had never allowed life to defeat him.
His silver hair was neatly combed.
His dark eyes were sharp.
The same eyes Mariana inherited.
"You didn't sleep," he said.
Mariana looked away from the phone.
"Neither did you.""
Her father placed the coffee beside her.
"I am old. I am allowed to worry.""
She almost smiled.
"You are impossible.""
"I learned from your mother.""
That made Mariana smile for a second.
Then it disappeared.
"Papa...""
He sat beside her.
"What are you feeling?""
She looked at the screen again.
The question was harder than she expected.
"I thought I would feel relieved.""
"But?""
"But I feel sad.""
Her father nodded.
"Because you loved him.""
Mariana swallowed.
"I loved who I thought he was.""
A quiet moment passed.
Then Don Esteban asked:
"Did he ever apologize?""
The question landed harder than she expected.
She looked down.
"No.""
"Not once?""
"He always found a reason.""
Her father nodded slowly.
"That tells you everything.""
Mariana closed her eyes.
Images returned.
Their wedding day.
Rodrigo holding her hand.
His promise.
His voice.
"I will build a life worthy of you.""
She had believed him.
Now she wondered if he had only loved the woman who helped him build his dream.
Not the woman herself.
Her phone rang again.
This time, the name on the screen made her freeze.
Rodrigo.
Her father noticed.
"Do you want to answer?""
Mariana stared at the phone.
A part of her wanted to ignore him.
Another part wanted to know why.
She answered.
"Hello.""
Silence.
Then his voice.
Different.
Smaller.
"Where are you?""
Mariana looked at her father.
"Why?""
"Because we need to talk.""
"No.""
Rodrigo exhaled sharply.
"Mariana, please.""
The word sounded strange coming from him.
She had spent years asking him for simple things.
A conversation.
An apology.
Honesty.
He had always been too powerful for those things.
Now he was asking.
"What happened?"" she asked.
His voice lowered.
"The board suspended me.""
Mariana said nothing.
"They froze my executive accounts.""
Still nothing.
"They are trying to remove me from the company.""
She looked out the window.
"And?""
"And?""
Rodrigo sounded offended.
"You know what this means.""
"Yes.""
"Then why do you sound like you don't care?""
Mariana closed her eyes.
Because she remembered the marble floor.
The riding crop.
Ximena's smile.
The moment she realized her husband had not lost control.
He had revealed himself.
"I care," she said.
Rodrigo softened.
"You do?""
"I care that I spent years trying to prevent this.""
Silence.
"I warned you.""
"I know.""
The answer surprised her.
Rodrigo Altamirano admitting fault was something she had almost never heard.
But she knew him.
An apology from him usually arrived when there was something to gain.
"What do you want?""
Another pause.
"I need your help.""
There it was.
Mariana laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was predictable.
"My help.""
"Yes.""
"You humiliated me last night.""
"I know.""
"You hurt me.""
"I know.""
"You let another woman sit in our home and watch.""
His silence grew heavier.
"I know.""
Mariana looked at her reflection in the window.
For years, she had waited to hear him acknowledge what he did.
Now that he finally did, it felt empty.
"Rodrigo.""
"Yes?""
"The saddest thing is that you only understand my pain now because you are experiencing yours.""
He didn't answer.
"I can't help you.""
"Mariana—"
"No.""
Her voice remained calm.
"I spent years standing beside you while you took credit for everything.""
She paused.
"Now you can stand alone.""
She ended the call.
Her hands were shaking.
Her father noticed.
"You are still attached to him.""
Mariana looked down.
"I know.""
"That is normal.""
"I hate that.""
Don Esteban leaned back.
"Your heart is not a machine. It does not shut off because someone hurts you.""
She nodded.
"But your choices can change.""
Before she could respond, the television downstairs suddenly became louder.
A reporter's voice filled the house.
"Breaking news from Mexico City. Sources close to Altamirano Sistemas confirm that several confidential contracts are now under review, including agreements connected to luxury properties and private consulting firms.""
Mariana and her father exchanged a look.
"Private consulting firms," he repeated.
Mariana understood immediately.
"Ximena.""
They walked downstairs.
On the television screen appeared a photo of Rodrigo at a business event.
Beside him stood Ximena.
The reporter continued.
"Documents obtained by investigators indicate millions of pesos transferred through companies with unclear ownership structures.""
Mariana felt a chill.
Not because she was surprised.
Because she realized something.
The investigation was bigger than Rodrigo.
Much bigger.
Her father noticed her expression.
"What?""
Mariana stared at the screen.
"I didn't give them everything.""
"What do you mean?""
"I only gave them the documents proving the financial irregularities.""
The reporter continued.
"Authorities are also examining possible misuse of corporate funds involving personal relationships connected to executive leadership.""
Mariana slowly sat down.
Someone else had provided evidence.
Someone else had opened another door.
"Papa...""
Her father looked at her.
"Yes?""
"Who else knew?""
Before he could answer, Mariana's phone received a message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*You thought Rodrigo was the only person lying to you?*
Her blood ran cold.
Another message appeared.
*Meet me alone. You deserve to know the truth about your husband.*
Mariana stared at the screen.
Her father immediately noticed.
"What does it say?""
She didn't answer.
Because underneath the message was a name.
A name she had never expected.
A name connected to Rodrigo's company.
A name connected to their marriage.
She slowly turned the phone toward her father.
His expression changed.
"Impossible.""
Mariana looked at him.
"Who is it?""
Don Esteban stood frozen.
Because the person who had sent the message was not an enemy.
It was someone Rodrigo trusted more than anyone.
Someone who had been beside him from the beginning.
Someone who knew every secret inside Altamirano Sistemas.
Her father's voice was barely a whisper.
"Mariana...""
She looked at the name again.
"Who?""
Don Esteban swallowed.
"Rodrigo's mother.""
Mariana felt the room go silent.
Doña Rebeca Altamirano.
The woman who had called her three times the night before.
The woman who told her to "learn her place.""
The woman who had defended Rodrigo her entire life.
The woman who now wanted to reveal the truth.
Mariana looked back at the message.
A final notification appeared.
*Come alone. Before Rodrigo finds out what I know.*
And for the first time since leaving the penthouse, Mariana realized something terrifying.
May you like
Rodrigo Altamirano’s empire had not collapsed because of her.
It had collapsed because the people closest to him were finally ready to tell the truth.
