Amused

Chapter 1: The Night Mariana Stopped Begging

The fiftieth blow was the moment Mariana Salvatierra realized she had spent ten years protecting a monster who was never planning to protect her.

The riding crop cracked against her back, and the sound disappeared into the silence of the Polanco penthouse.

For a few seconds, she heard nothing but her own breathing.

Not Rodrigo Altamirano’s laughter.

Not Ximena Duarte’s satisfied little sigh.

Not the city moving thirty floors below them.

Only the sound of her own heartbeat.

Mariana remained on her knees on the cold marble floor, one trembling hand pressed against the fabric of her torn silk dress. Her dark hair clung to her face, wet from tears she hated herself for shedding.

Outside the enormous glass windows, Mexico City glittered beneath the night sky.

Thousands of people were driving home.

Families were eating dinner.

Couples were laughing in restaurants.

The world continued as if nothing had happened.

As if inside the most expensive apartment in Polanco, a woman’s entire life had just collapsed.

Rodrigo Altamirano stood behind her, holding the same riding crop he used at his ranch in Valle de Bravo.

His white shirt was perfectly pressed.

His expensive watch still sat exactly where it belonged on his wrist.

There was not a single sign that he had just lost control.

That was the part Mariana would remember forever.

He did not look like a man who had committed a terrible act.

He looked like a man who had finished a business negotiation.

"Look at yourself," Rodrigo said coldly.

Mariana slowly lifted her eyes.

The man standing in front of her was the same man who had once promised her forever beneath a garden full of white roses.

The same man who had held her hand when her father was sick.

The same man who had whispered, "You are the only person in this world who believes in me.""

She had believed him.

That was her mistake.

"You want to know why this happened?"" Rodrigo asked.

Mariana said nothing.

Her silence irritated him more than anger would have.

"You always had this problem," he continued.

"You think being intelligent makes you equal to me.""

From the beige sofa behind him, Ximena Duarte smiled.

She looked completely comfortable.

Her legs were crossed elegantly.

A crystal glass of champagne rested between her fingers.

She had watched everything.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she enjoyed it.

"Rodrigo," Ximena said softly, pretending to be concerned, "maybe she finally understands.""

Mariana turned her head slightly toward her.

Ximena tilted her glass.

"I told you this would happen," Ximena continued.

"You should have stopped fighting him years ago.""

Mariana stared at her.

The woman who had destroyed her marriage was sitting in her home wearing a diamond necklace Rodrigo had bought with money that belonged to both of them.

"Your necklace," Mariana whispered.

Ximena glanced down.

"What about it?""

"That was purchased from the company account.""

A small smile disappeared from Ximena's face.

Only for a second.

Then it returned.

"See?"" Ximena said to Rodrigo.

"This is what I mean. She is obsessed with controlling everything.""

Rodrigo looked at Mariana with disgust.

"Even now?""

Mariana forced herself to stand.

Her legs shook.

She grabbed the edge of the dining table to keep from falling.

"Even now," she said quietly, "I am the only person in this room telling you the truth.""

The air changed.

Rodrigo's expression hardened.

"You still don't understand.""

"No," Mariana replied.

"You don't.""

For the first time that night, Rodrigo looked uncertain.

It was brief.

Almost invisible.

But Mariana saw it.

She had spent ten years studying him.

She knew every expression on his face.

She knew when he was lying.

She knew when he was afraid.

"You think I betrayed you because I questioned the company," Mariana said.

Rodrigo laughed.

"You went behind my back.""

"I looked at the numbers.""

"You embarrassed me.""

"I warned you.""

"You called me a fraud.""

Mariana shook her head.

"I said your company was being destroyed by the people around you.""

Her eyes moved toward Ximena.

The smile on Ximena's face faded.

"Be careful," Rodrigo said.

"No.""

The word surprised both of them.

Mariana wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth with shaking fingers.

"No, Rodrigo. I have been careful my entire life.""

She looked around the penthouse.

The designer furniture.

The paintings.

The view.

Everything that represented their success.

Everything she had helped build.

"When we met, Altamirano Sistemas was three employees and a rented office.""

Rodrigo said nothing.

"You slept on a broken couch because you couldn't afford a hotel during business trips.""

His jaw tightened.

"I stayed awake every night helping you prepare presentations. I reviewed contracts. I introduced you to investors. I convinced my father to give you a chance.""

"Don't bring your father into this.""

"Why? Because he respected me?""

Rodrigo's eyes turned darker.

Mariana continued.

"Because he knew I was the reason you survived your first five years?""

"Enough.""

"No. You want to know what hurts the most?""

She stepped closer.

Not close enough for him to touch her.

Close enough for him to hear every word.

"It isn't the betrayal.""

Rodrigo stared at her.

"It isn't Ximena.""

The other woman shifted uncomfortably.

"It isn't even this.""

Mariana touched the torn sleeve of her dress.

"The worst part is that you actually believed I was weak.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Rodrigo laughed.

A loud, arrogant laugh.

"You?""

He looked at Ximena.

"She thinks she is dangerous.""

Ximena laughed too.

"You should have seen her face earlier when she threatened to expose the company.""

Rodrigo turned back to Mariana.

"Do you know what happens to women who try to destroy powerful men?""

Mariana looked directly into his eyes.

"They stop being afraid of them.""

The smile disappeared from his face.

Before Rodrigo could answer, his phone rang.

The sound echoed through the apartment.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Mariana noticed.

"Who is it?""

Rodrigo ignored her and answered.

"What?""

A pause.

Then his face became tense.

"No, that's impossible.""

Another pause.

"Check again.""

Mariana watched him carefully.

A few seconds later, he ended the call.

Ximena immediately stood.

"What happened?""

Rodrigo didn't answer.

"What happened?"" she repeated.

He looked at Mariana.

And for the first time that night, she saw something she had not seen in years.

Fear.

"What did you do?"" he asked.

Mariana almost smiled.

Because that question told her everything.

He finally understood.

The woman he had spent years humiliating was not helpless.

She was patient.

"I haven't done anything," she said.

Rodrigo walked toward her.

"Don't lie to me.""

"I am not the one who needs to lie.""

His phone rang again.

This time, he answered immediately.

"Tell me.""

The color drained from his face.

Mariana watched him listen.

The man who had controlled boardrooms.

The man who had made politicians wait for his calls.

The man who believed money could erase any mistake.

He stood frozen.

"What do you mean the accounts were accessed?""

Silence.

"What do you mean the auditors are already there?""

Another pause.

Then Rodrigo whispered:

"Who authorized this?""

Mariana looked toward the windows.

The city lights reflected in the glass.

For ten years, she had carried his secrets.

For ten years, she had cleaned up his mistakes.

For ten years, she had protected his empire while he convinced himself he built it alone.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, the woman he broke was gone.

Rodrigo lowered the phone slowly.

"Mariana...""

She looked at him.

"What?""

His voice was suddenly softer.

Almost human.

Almost like the man she married.

"The auditors... they found something.""

Ximena stepped closer.

"What did they find?""

Rodrigo ignored her.

His eyes remained fixed on his wife.

"Who else knows about this?""

Mariana felt something inside her become completely still.

Not happiness.

Not revenge.

Something colder.

Certainty.

She reached into the small handbag she had dropped near the table earlier.

Rodrigo watched her.

"What are you doing?""

Mariana pulled out her phone.

"I am making one call.""

"To who?""

She looked at the man who had just spent an hour trying to break her.

The man who thought power belonged only to people like him.

Then she dialed a number she had not called in years.

A number that could open doors Rodrigo never knew existed.

The call connected.

A deep voice answered.

"Mariana?""

Her father.

Don Esteban Salvatierra.

The man who had warned her on her wedding day:

"A man who needs you to become smaller will never deserve your greatness.""

Mariana closed her eyes.

Her voice was calm.

Almost peaceful.

"Papa.""

A silence followed.

Then he asked the question she knew he would ask.

"What happened?""

Mariana looked at Rodrigo.

At Ximena.

At the life she had built and the man who had destroyed it.

May you like

And she said the words that would change everything.

"Ruin his life.""
