Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Curtain
For three seconds, nobody moved.
The warehouse became a frozen photograph.
Mariana stood beside Camila, the ownership document still in her hands.
Rodrigo stood near the entrance, his face pale, his eyes fixed on the weapon behind him.
And behind Rodrigo stood a man Mariana recognized immediately.
Not because she knew him well.
Because she had seen him at her father’s side for years.
Alejandro Cruz.
Don Esteban Salvatierra’s security chief.
The man who had driven Mariana to school when she was a teenager.
The man who had stood quietly behind her father during business meetings.
The man who had always seemed invisible.
Until now.
Mariana looked at him.
"Alex?""
His expression did not change.
That hurt more than anger.
Because she remembered him smiling at her when she was young.
She remembered him bringing her father’s favorite coffee.
She remembered thinking he was one of the few people in the world who could be trusted.
Now he stood in the shadows holding a weapon.
"Why?"" Mariana whispered.
Alejandro said nothing.
Rodrigo stepped forward.
"Mariana, listen to me.""
She looked at him.
"Why is he here?""
Rodrigo's jaw tightened.
"Because your father sent him.""
Mariana looked back at Alejandro.
"Is that true?""
The man remained silent.
And somehow, that silence felt like confirmation.
Camila moved closer to Mariana.
"Don't believe Rodrigo.""
Mariana turned.
"What?""
Camila stared at Rodrigo.
"He lies when he is cornered.""
Rodrigo looked at her with disgust.
"You still don't understand what is happening.""
Camila laughed bitterly.
"I understand perfectly.""
"No.""
Rodrigo pointed at the documents in Mariana's hand.
"You have no idea what you found.""
Mariana looked between them.
"Then explain.""
For once, Rodrigo didn't immediately answer.
That frightened her.
Because Rodrigo Altamirano always had an answer.
A speech.
A justification.
A way to make himself look like the victim.
But now he looked like a man who had finally run out of stories.
"Mariana.""
His voice softened.
"Those documents are not what you think.""
She held them tighter.
"They say I own the company.""
"No.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"They say I control it.""
"Not exactly.""
"Then what exactly?""
Rodrigo looked at Alejandro.
The older man lowered the weapon slightly.
A small movement.
But Mariana noticed.
Everyone in the room was afraid.
Even the man holding the gun.
"The agreement was created as protection," Rodrigo said.
"For who?""
A pause.
"For you.""
Mariana almost laughed.
"Everyone keeps saying they protected me.""
Rodrigo looked away.
"Because we did.""
"No.""
Her voice sharpened.
"You protected your secrets.""
The words hit him.
Because he knew they were true.
"Mariana, if you activate that agreement, the company doesn't just belong to you.""
"What does that mean?""
"It means you inherit everything.""
She frowned.
"Everything?""
"The assets.""
A pause.
"The debts.""
Another.
"The legal responsibilities.""
The room became quiet.
Camila looked at Mariana.
"He's trying to scare you.""
Rodrigo shook his head.
"No.""
He looked directly at Mariana.
"For once, I'm telling the truth.""
That was the problem.
She couldn't tell anymore.
The man who had lied for years was suddenly saying things that sounded honest.
And the people who claimed to protect her had hidden the same truth.
Mariana looked at Alejandro.
"Did my father send you?""
Finally, he spoke.
"Yes.""
Her heart sank.
"Why?""
Alejandro looked at her with sadness.
"Because he knew this day would come.""
"What day?""
"The day Rodrigo would lose control.""
Rodrigo looked angry.
"Watch what you say.""
Alejandro ignored him.
"Your father never trusted Rodrigo with the company.""
Mariana felt a sharp pain.
"My father never trusted my husband?""
"No.""
"Then why let me marry him?""
Nobody answered.
And that silence was the answer.
Because everyone had made decisions about her life without asking her.
Everyone.
Her father.
Rodrigo.
Doña Rebeca.
Camila.
Everyone except her.
"How long?"" Mariana asked.
Nobody spoke.
"How long did you all know?""
Rodrigo looked down.
Camila looked away.
Alejandro remained silent.
Mariana felt something inside her break.
Not because she discovered another secret.
Because she realized her entire life had been built around conversations she was never invited to.
Then her phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
The screen showed:
*Don Esteban Salvatierra.*
Her father.
Mariana answered.
"Papa.""
His voice came immediately.
"Where are you?""
She looked at Alejandro.
"Why?""
"Because Alejandro is not supposed to be there.""
Her blood ran cold.
Everyone froze.
Mariana slowly turned toward the man.
"What did you say?""
Her father continued.
"Mariana, listen carefully.""
The fear in his voice was something she had never heard before.
"Get away from him.""
She stared at Alejandro.
"But you sent him.""
"No.""
The answer came instantly.
"I sent him to find you.""
A pause.
"Not to threaten you.""
Alejandro's face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Mariana noticed.
"Then who is he working for?""
Her father went silent.
Too long.
"Papa?""
When he finally answered, his voice was low.
"The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.""
The warehouse lights flickered.
Mariana looked around.
"Who?""
Her father's answer came quietly.
"Rodrigo's father.""
The words made no sense.
"Rodrigo's father died years ago.""
"No.""
A pause.
"He was believed to be dead.""
The room seemed to shift.
Rodrigo looked at Mariana.
"What is he talking about?""
Mariana stared at him.
For the first time, Rodrigo looked genuinely confused.
Not pretending.
Not performing.
Confused.
Her father continued:
"Mariana, you need to leave now.""
"Why?""
"Because the man who created Altamirano Sistemas was never Rodrigo.""
A cold silence filled the warehouse.
"Then who?""
Her father's voice dropped.
"Mateo Altamirano.""
Rodrigo stepped back.
"No.""
Everyone looked at him.
His face had lost all color.
"No.""
Mariana looked at her husband.
"You know that name.""
Rodrigo didn't answer.
"Rodrigo.""
His voice came out barely above a whisper.
"My father died when I was twenty.""
Her father replied through the phone:
"That is the story you were given.""
Rodrigo looked shaken.
For years, Mariana had watched Rodrigo fear failure.
Fear poverty.
Fear losing power.
But she had never seen him afraid of a person.
Until now.
"Where is he?"" Rodrigo asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Alejandro's phone rang.
The sound echoed through the warehouse.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
He answered.
"Yes.""
A pause.
Then:
"Understood.""
He ended the call.
Mariana watched him.
"Who was that?""
Alejandro didn't respond.
Rodrigo stepped closer.
"Who was it?""
Alejandro looked at him.
"The man who owns the company.""
Rodrigo's breathing stopped.
"Impossible.""
Alejandro looked toward Mariana.
"He wants the documents.""
Camila immediately moved.
"We need to destroy them.""
Mariana held them tighter.
"No.""
Everyone looked at her.
She had spent her entire life being the person others protected.
The person others controlled.
The person others lied to.
Not anymore.
"What happens if I refuse?""
Alejandro's expression became serious.
"Then he will come for you.""
Mariana looked at Rodrigo.
Then Camila.
Then the documents.
The truth she had spent years searching for was finally in her hands.
And suddenly, she understood something.
The documents were never just about ownership.
They were about control.
Everyone wanted them because whoever held them held the future.
Her phone rang again.
This time, unknown number.
Mariana answered.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then a man's voice filled the warehouse.
Older.
Calm.
Confident.
A voice that sounded like someone who had never needed to raise it.
"Mariana Salvatierra.""
She froze.
"Who are you?""
A quiet laugh.
"Someone who has been waiting a very long time to meet you.""
Rodrigo stepped back.
"Father?""
The voice continued.
"Hello, Rodrigo.""
The entire room went silent.
Mariana looked at her husband.
The color had disappeared from his face.
The voice spoke again.
"Bring me my company.""
A pause.
"Or I will take everything from the woman who owns it.""
The call ended.
And Mariana finally understood.
The war was never between her and Rodrigo.
May you like
They were both pieces in a game that started before they ever met.
And the person who created the game had just returned.
