Amused

Chapter 6: The Secret Her Father Buried

Mariana had spent her entire life believing there was one person in the world who would never lie to her.

Her father.

Don Esteban Salvatierra had taught her how to read contracts before she learned how to drive.

He taught her that numbers told stories.

That signatures revealed character.

That trust was something earned, not demanded.

When Rodrigo manipulated her, it hurt.

When Doña Rebeca betrayed her, it disappointed her.

But this was different.

This felt impossible.

Because if her father had hidden something from her, then the one place she thought she was safe had a locked door too.

Mariana stared at the photograph on her phone.

Don Esteban standing inside the old Altamirano warehouse.

Beside Daniel Vega.

The man who had worked for Rodrigo for years.

The man who had just told her he found something connected to her.

Her father looked calm in the picture.

Almost like he belonged there.

"Mariana.""

Doña Rebeca's voice pulled her back.

"What are you going to do?""

Mariana didn't answer immediately.

Her mind was moving too quickly.

Every conversation.

Every memory.

Every strange moment she had ignored.

Her father refusing to discuss certain parts of Rodrigo's company.

Rodrigo becoming uncomfortable whenever her family was mentioned.

The way investors always respected Don Esteban more than Rodrigo admitted.

There had always been pieces missing.

She just never knew there was a puzzle.

"I am going home.""

Doña Rebeca stood.

"To your father?""

Mariana nodded.

"Yes.""

"Are you sure?""

Mariana looked at her.

"No.""

A pause.

"But I need the truth.""

The drive back to her father's house felt longer than usual.

The city moved outside the window.

People walked through streets filled with noise and life.

A woman sold flowers on a corner.

A group of teenagers laughed outside a restaurant.

A man carried groceries home.

Ordinary moments.

Mariana envied them.

She wanted a simple problem.

A normal betrayal.

Something she could understand.

But her life had become a web of secrets.

When she arrived, the house was quiet.

Too quiet.

She entered through the front door.

"Papa?""

No answer.

She walked deeper into the house.

The study door was open.

Inside, Don Esteban stood behind his desk.

He already knew.

That was the first thing she noticed.

He wasn't surprised.

He was waiting.

"How long?"" Mariana asked.

Her father didn't pretend not to understand.

"How long what?""

"Don't.""

Her voice cracked.

"Not with me.""

The older man lowered his eyes.

A painful silence filled the room.

"How long have you owned part of Altamirano Sistemas?""

Don Esteban closed his eyes.

And that was enough.

Mariana felt her chest tighten.

"You did.""

"I invested.""

"You lied.""

"I protected you.""

She laughed once.

A small, broken sound.

"Everyone says that.""

Her father looked at her.

"Mariana—"

"No.""

She stepped closer.

"Rodrigo said he protected me.""

Her voice grew stronger.

"Doña Rebeca said she protected me.""

She shook her head.

"And now you?""

Don Esteban looked wounded.

"I am not them.""

"I know.""

The words came quietly.

"That's why this hurts more.""

Her father sat down.

For the first time, Mariana saw him look old.

Not weak.

Just tired.

"I should have told you.""

"Yes.""

"I wanted to.""

"But you didn't.""

"No.""

He looked at his hands.

"Because I knew what would happen.""

"What?""

"Rodrigo would believe you only married him because of my money.""

Mariana froze.

The answer was painful because it made sense.

Rodrigo had always been obsessed with proving himself.

"Did he know?""

"No.""

"Never?""

"He knew I invested when the company started.""

Her father shook his head.

"He did not know the full agreement.""

Mariana stared.

"Why?""

"Because the agreement was not about controlling him.""

"Then what was it about?""

Don Esteban looked at her.

"You.""

The answer confused her.

"Me?""

"When you introduced me to Rodrigo, I saw something.""

"What?""

"He was brilliant.""

A pause.

"But he was also desperate.""

Mariana remembered.

The young Rodrigo.

Ambitious.

Hungry.

Terrified of failure.

"I believed he had talent," her father continued.

"But talent without discipline destroys people.""

Mariana looked away.

"So you became his safety net.""

"Yes.""

"And he never knew.""

"No.""

She whispered:

"He spent years saying he built everything alone.""

Her father nodded sadly.

"That was always important to him.""

A bitter smile appeared on Mariana's face.

"More important than the truth.""

Neither spoke.

Then Mariana asked the question she had been avoiding.

"Why were you at the warehouse?""

Her father's expression changed.

"I was looking for something.""

"What?""

"The same thing Ximena took.""

Mariana felt cold.

"What?""

"The original shareholder records.""

"Why?""

"Because they contain information that could change everything.""

She stepped closer.

"What information?""

Don Esteban hesitated.

And Mariana immediately noticed.

"No.""

"What?""

"Don't hesitate.""

Her voice became quiet.

"Not now.""

Her father looked at her.

"The original agreement contains a clause.""

"What clause?""

"A protection clause.""

"For who?""

He didn't answer.

Mariana's heart sank.

"For who, Papa?""

Finally:

"Rodrigo.""

The room became silent.

Mariana stared at him.

"You protected him?""

"At the time.""

"Why?""

"Because he was building something. Because one mistake could destroy everything.""

She shook her head.

"But now?""

"Now that same clause can remove him.""

Mariana understood.

The agreement was not just proof of ownership.

It was a weapon.

A weapon everyone was fighting over.

"Who else knows about it?""

Her father looked away.

"Ximena.""

"How?""

"I don't know.""

"Rodrigo?""

"Not completely.""

"Doña Rebeca?""

A pause.

"Yes.""

Mariana closed her eyes.

Everyone knew pieces of the truth.

Everyone except her.

The daughter.

The wife.

The person at the center of all of it.

Her phone vibrated.

A message.

From Daniel.

She opened it quickly.

*I escaped.*

Relief came for only one second.

Then another message appeared.

*But the person who attacked me took the documents.*

Mariana looked up.

"Daniel found the records.""

Her father stood.

"What?""

"But someone took them.""

Don Esteban's face changed.

"Who?""

Mariana read the next message.

Her hands became cold.

*I saw her face.*

A pause.

*It was not Ximena.*

Mariana frowned.

Then another message appeared.

*It was someone who works for you.*

She looked at her father.

"Someone who works for me?""

Her father immediately understood.

"Who?""

Mariana didn't know.

Then Daniel sent a photograph.

A blurry image from the warehouse security camera.

The person walking away with the documents.

Mariana opened it.

At first, she only saw a silhouette.

Then she zoomed in.

Her breath stopped.

Because she knew that person.

She had seen her every day.

She had trusted her.

She had defended her.

The woman in the photograph was carrying the stolen documents.

And around her wrist was a bracelet Mariana had personally given her as a gift.

"Impossible.""

Her father looked at the screen.

"Who is it?""

Mariana couldn't speak.

Because the answer was someone she never expected.

Someone who had always stood beside her.

Someone who knew all her secrets.

Someone who knew every move she made.

Finally, she whispered:

"Camila.""

Her father's face changed.

"Your assistant?""

Mariana nodded slowly.

Camila Reyes.

Her closest friend.

The woman who had helped her survive the last two years of marriage.

The woman who knew about Rodrigo's affairs.

The woman who knew about the financial documents.

The woman who had held Mariana while she cried.

The woman who had told her:

"If you ever need me, I will be there.""

Mariana looked again at the photograph.

And something inside her broke.

Not because Camila betrayed her.

Because she realized Camila had been watching everything.

The entire time.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Mariana answered.

"Hello?""

A familiar voice spoke.

Soft.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

"Mariana.""

She froze.

"Camila?""

A pause.

Then:

"I'm sorry you had to find out this way.""

Mariana stood still.

"What did you do?""

Camila sighed.

"The thing you were never brave enough to do.""

Mariana's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?""

Camila's voice lowered.

"It means Rodrigo Altamirano was never the only person who deserved to lose everything.""

The call went silent.

Then Camila said the words that changed Mariana's understanding of the entire war.

"Your father didn't hide the truth from you to protect Rodrigo.""

A pause.

"He hid it because he knew what you would become if you learned it.""

Mariana felt a chill.

"What are you talking about?""

Camila whispered:

"You were never just Rodrigo's wife, Mariana.""

Another pause.

"You were the person who could destroy him.""

The line disconnected.

And for the first time, Mariana wondered if everyone around her had known something she had never understood.

May you like

Maybe she wasn't the victim caught between powerful people.

Maybe she had always been the most important piece on the board.
