Chapter 9: The Person Nobody Suspected

The man on the security footage was Detective Robert Hayes.

The same detective who had reopened Emma’s case.

The same detective who had promised Alexander justice.

The same man who had stood beside them and claimed to be helping.

Alexander stared at the screen.

“No.””

Daniel’s expression was grim.

“He’s been feeding information.””

Clara looked confused.

“But why?””

The answer came twenty minutes later.

Because Robert Hayes wasn’t working for Victoria.

He was working for Michael.

The detective arrived at the mansion before they could find him.

He walked through the front door calmly.

“You already know.””

Daniel raised his weapon.

“Hands where I can see them.””

Robert smiled.

“You think this changes anything?””

Alexander stepped forward.

“You betrayed us.””

Robert looked at him.

“I followed the money.””

“You helped criminals.””

“I helped myself.””

The arrogance in his voice was disgusting.

He had never cared about justice.

Only opportunity.

But then something unexpected happened.

Robert looked at Lily.

His expression changed.

For a moment, he looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know she was involved.””

Clara’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t pretend you care.””

Robert looked away.

“I made mistakes.””

“No,” Clara said.

“You made choices.””

The room became silent.

Robert finally confessed.

Michael paid him to destroy evidence.

Victoria paid him later to hide the truth.

Everyone wanted something.

Everyone except Lily.

She only wanted her family.

Then Alexander received a call.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Victoria.

“Hello, Alex.””

Everyone listened.

“Where are you?””

Victoria laughed softly.

“Still trying to save everyone?””

Her voice sounded tired.

Not angry.

Almost broken.

“Bring Emma to the old church.””

Alexander tightened his grip.

“No.””

A pause.

Then Victoria said something unexpected.

“I never wanted to hurt Lily.””

Clara looked confused.

Alexander looked furious.

“You abused her.””

“I know.””

The honesty shocked them.

Victoria continued.

“I became someone I hated.””

“Then stop.””

Silence.

Then:

“I can’t.””

The call ended.

They tracked the location.

The old church stood abandoned outside the city.

When they arrived, Victoria was waiting.

Alone.

Emma stepped forward.

“Why?””

Victoria looked at her.

“Because you had everything I wanted.””

Emma shook her head.

“You had a choice.””

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

She looked at Lily.

“I wanted her to love me.””

Lily stared.

“You scared me.””

Those four words destroyed Victoria.

Because they were true.

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“I know.””

For the first time, she looked human.

Not a monster.

Not a villain.

Just a broken person who had made unforgivable choices.

Then a car door slammed outside.

Everyone turned.

Michael walked in.

Victoria’s face changed.

“You followed me.””

Michael smiled.

“Of course.””

Daniel immediately moved.

But Michael had a weapon.

Everyone froze.

“I’m tired of cleaning up your mess, Victoria.””

Victoria stared.

“You used me.””

Michael smiled.

“Everyone uses everyone.””

He grabbed Lily.

Alexander moved instantly.

“Don’t touch her.””

Michael pressed the weapon tighter.

“Funny.””

He looked at Alexander.

“You finally care.””

The words hurt because they were true.

Alexander had spent years building companies.

But his daughter had been suffering in silence.

Then Clara stepped forward.

Slowly.

Everyone looked at her.

She whispered:

“Michael.””

He turned.

“What?””

“You made one mistake.””

Michael laughed.

“What mistake?””

Clara smiled.

“You thought nobody was watching.””

She held up her phone.

Recording.

Michael’s confession.

His face changed.

Because this time, the truth existed somewhere he couldn’t erase.

Police sirens approached.

Michael panicked.

He pulled Lily backward.

Then Victoria moved.

She stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Everyone froze.

Michael stared.

“Move.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

A moment later, everything happened at once.

Daniel grabbed Michael.

Alexander pulled Lily away.

And Victoria collapsed against the wall.

She had saved the child she once hurt.

But the final truth still remained.

As police took Michael away, Victoria looked at Alexander.

“There’s something you need to know.””

Alexander stopped.

“What?””

May you like

Victoria whispered:

“Emma wasn’t the only person who survived that night.””
