Amused

Chapter 5: The Truth Beneath the Ashes

Alexander read the document three times.

Then a fourth.

Like his mind refused to accept the words.

“Altered?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Victoria’s face had lost all color.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I have records from the original investigation.””

Alexander looked at Victoria.

“Why didn’t I know this?””

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

Lily stood beside Clara, holding her hand.

The little girl watched the adults argue.

But this time, she wasn’t alone.

Daniel placed more papers on the table.

“Your first wife discovered financial problems before her death.””

Alexander frowned.

“What problems?””

“Accounts opened under Victoria Hale’s name.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Daniel continued.

“She was moving money from your company before she married you.””

Alexander stared at his wife.

“No.””

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“Alex, listen to me.””

For the first time, Clara saw fear in Victoria’s eyes.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

“You have to believe me.””

Alexander looked broken.

“I believed you for years.””

Victoria reached for him.

He stepped away.

That small movement destroyed her.

Lily whispered:

“Daddy?””

Alexander turned immediately.

His expression softened.

“I’m sorry.””

The little girl started crying.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she finally felt safe.

Clara watched father and daughter hug.

But she knew the story wasn’t finished.

There were still questions.

Why had Victoria entered their lives?

Why had Emma’s death been covered up?

And why had nobody stopped her before?

That evening, Daniel showed Clara one final piece of evidence.

A photograph.

A hospital security image from the night Emma died.

“This is Victoria entering the hospital,” Daniel said.

Clara looked closer.

“And?””

Daniel pointed.

“She wasn’t visiting Emma.””

In the photograph, Victoria was carrying a folder.

A folder labeled:

“Emma Oleso — Final Statement.””

Clara felt a chill.

“She had Emma’s statement?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“What was in it?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Something Victoria tried very hard to erase.””

Before Clara could ask more, Alexander rushed into the room.

His face was pale.

“We found something in Victoria’s office.””

“What?””

He held a small envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Emma’s handwriting.

Clara recognized the name immediately.

Alexander unfolded it.

Then he read the first line.

His hands began shaking.

“Alex…”

Everyone waited.

“What does it say?”” Clara asked.

Alexander looked up.

His eyes filled with tears.

“She knew.””

“Knew what?””

Alexander looked toward Lily.

Then whispered:

“Emma knew Victoria was planning to take my daughter away from me.””

The room went silent.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

A second later, everyone heard the sound of a car starting outside.

Daniel ran to the window.

“Someone is leaving.””

Alexander rushed after him.

But the driveway was already empty.

Only one thing remained on the ground near the gate.

A phone.

And on the screen was a message sent moments earlier.

*“If you want your daughter back, come alone.””*
