Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Clara barely slept.

The notebook sat on her bedside table all night.

She kept staring at the final page.

“Mommy, please tell Daddy the truth because I’m scared.””

The words were written by a child who didn’t understand adult secrets.

A child who only understood fear.

At seven in the morning, Clara found Lily in the kitchen.

The little girl was pouring cereal into a bowl.

“Good morning,” Clara said.

Lily smiled.

“Good morning.””

Clara hesitated.

“Lily, can I ask you something?””

The girl nodded.

“Why did you write that notebook?””

Lily froze.

Then she looked around.

“Did Mrs. Hale see it?””

“No.””

Lily relaxed slightly.

“She told me to hide it.””

“Why?””

“Because Daddy would be angry.””

Clara sat down.

“Angry about what?””

Lily’s fingers tightened around the spoon.

“My mommy didn’t die because of an accident.””

The kitchen suddenly felt colder.

“What do you mean?””

Lily looked toward the hallway.

“Mrs. Hale said I was too young to understand.””

Clara leaned closer.

“Understand what?””

Before Lily answered, footsteps approached.

Victoria.

“Good morning.””

Lily immediately became silent.

Victoria looked between them.

“What were you discussing?””

“Breakfast,” Clara replied.

Victoria smiled.

“Of course.””

But her eyes said she didn’t believe her.

That afternoon, Alexander left for a business meeting.

Clara waited.

Then she followed Lily to the garden.

“Tell me about your mother,” Clara said.

Lily sat on the grass.

“She was kind.””

A small smile appeared.

“She sang when she cooked.””

“What was her name?””

“Emma.””

Clara remembered hearing that name before.

Emma Oleso.

Alexander’s first wife.

The woman everyone said had died tragically.

“What happened to her?””

Lily looked down.

“Daddy said there was an accident.””

“And what does Mrs. Hale say?””

The girl whispered.

“She says my mommy was weak.””

Clara felt a chill.

That wasn’t grief.

That was cruelty.

Later that evening, Clara searched old newspapers online using the house computer.

She found articles about Emma Oleso’s death.

The official report said it was a car accident.

But one detail caught Clara’s attention.

The accident happened two weeks before Alexander met Victoria.

And Victoria had been at the hospital the night Emma died.

Clara stared at the screen.

That couldn’t be a coincidence.

Then she heard a noise.

She turned.

Victoria stood behind her.

“You’re very curious.””

Clara closed the laptop.

“I was looking for recipes.””

Victoria laughed.

“You’re a terrible liar.””

She walked closer.

“You found something.””

Clara said nothing.

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“Do you know what happens to people who think they can destroy my life?””

“No.””

“They lose everything.””

Clara stood.

“This is about Lily.””

“No,” Victoria snapped.

Then she paused.

“It’s about control.””

The honesty shocked Clara.

Victoria continued.

“Do you know how hard it is to build a life like mine?””

Clara stared at her.

“You hurt a child to protect your image?””

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“Then tell Mr. Oleso.””

Silence.

A dangerous silence.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Careful.””

That night, Clara made another decision.

She copied every file she could find.

The security records.

The household expenses.

The documents connected to Victoria.

But when she returned to her room, she found her belongings scattered across the floor.

Her suitcase was open.

Her clothes were everywhere.

And sitting on her bed was Victoria.

Holding Clara’s phone.

The phone with the recording.

May you like

Victoria smiled.

“I was wondering when you would betray me.””
