Amused

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Perfect Marriage

Clara had spent her entire life learning how to survive powerful people.

She knew when to lower her eyes.

When to stay silent.

When to disappear into the background.

But standing in that hallway, facing Victoria Hale, she realized something.

Some moments demanded courage more than caution.

“I was checking the cleaning schedule,” Clara said.

Victoria stared at her.

For several seconds, neither woman moved.

Then Victoria smiled.

A fake, polished smile.

“Of course.””

She placed the bowl on a nearby table.

“You’ve been working here long enough to understand something, Clara.””

“Yes, ma’am.””

“This house runs on trust.””

Clara said nothing.

Victoria stepped closer.

“And people who break trust don’t stay here.””

The threat was clear.

Clara forced herself to breathe.

“I understand.””

Victoria looked toward the kitchen.

“Lily is a difficult child. People see a sad face and assume they know the whole story.””

“She’s eight years old,” Clara replied.

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re getting attached.””

“No.””

“Good.””

Victoria picked up her phone.

“Because attachment makes people foolish.””

She walked away.

But Clara noticed something.

Victoria didn’t look confident.

She looked nervous.

Like someone afraid of being discovered.

Later that night, Clara quietly entered Lily’s bedroom.

The little girl was sitting on her bed wearing pajamas decorated with stars.

When she saw Clara, she quickly wiped her cheeks.

“I’m okay.””

Those words hurt Clara more than crying.

Children shouldn’t have to say that.

“You don’t have to pretend with me,” Clara whispered.

Lily looked down.

“Is Mrs. Hale mad at you?””

“A little.””

“I’m sorry.””

Clara sat beside her.

“Why are you apologizing?””

“Because everyone gets in trouble because of me.””

Clara frowned.

“No, sweetheart. That’s not true.””

Lily picked at the blanket.

“Before Mrs. Hale came, my daddy ate dinner with me every night.””

Her voice became smaller.

“Then after they got married, he started traveling more.””

Clara listened carefully.

“Does your father know what happens here?””

Lily shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Mrs. Hale said if I tell him, he’ll think I’m a liar.””

Clara felt anger rising.

“That’s not true.””

Lily looked at her.

“Really?””

“Really.””

For the first time, Lily smiled.

A tiny smile.

But it was enough.

The next morning, Clara woke before sunrise.

She had made her decision.

She would call Alexander.

But when she reached for the phone, she found something strange.

The emergency contact sheet was gone.

Someone had removed it.

Clara searched the office area.

Nothing.

Then she noticed the security camera near the hallway.

The small red light was off.

Her blood ran cold.

Someone had disabled the cameras.

Only someone with access could do that.

And there was only one person who controlled everything inside the mansion.

Victoria.

That afternoon, Alexander Oleso finally returned home.

Clara saw him through the front window.

Tall.

Exhausted.

A man carrying the weight of a company on his shoulders.

Lily ran toward the entrance.

“Daddy!””

For a moment, everything changed.

Alexander dropped his briefcase and hugged his daughter.

“Hey, princess.””

Clara watched.

The way Lily held onto him.

The way Alexander smiled.

There was love there.

Real love.

But then Victoria walked in.

And Lily immediately became quiet.

Alexander noticed.

“What happened?””

“Nothing,” Victoria said quickly.

Lily looked down.

Clara wanted to speak.

She wanted to tell him everything.

Then Victoria looked at her.

Just once.

A warning.

A reminder.

But Clara stepped forward anyway.

“Mr. Oleso…”

Alexander turned.

“Yes?””

Before Clara could answer, Victoria interrupted.

“Clara was just telling me she wants to quit.””

Clara froze.

“What?””

Victoria smiled.

“She said she doesn’t feel comfortable here anymore.””

Alexander looked surprised.

“Is that true?””

Clara opened her mouth.

And then she saw Lily standing behind him.

Terrified.

Because Lily knew what Victoria was capable of.

Clara swallowed.

“No, sir.””

Victoria smiled.

“Good.””

But that night, Clara found something hidden under Lily’s bed.

A small notebook.

Inside were drawings.

Hundreds of them.

Pictures of a little girl and her father.

And on the final page was a sentence written in shaky handwriting.

“Mommy, please tell Daddy the truth because I’m scared.””

Clara turned the page.

And saw a name written underneath.

May you like

A name she never expected.

Victoria Hale.
