Amused

Chapter 9: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

"Where did she get my signature?""

I could barely recognize my own voice.

Michael was crying on the other end of the phone.

"Daniel, please. I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

"Vanessa told me she had a copy of your old business authorization.""

I frowned.

"What authorization?""

"The one you signed when you were setting up the family investment account.""

I remembered it.

Years earlier, I'd signed several documents at a financial office.

They had included business authorizations, identity verification forms, and instructions concerning our family assets.

"How did Vanessa get them?""

"She said she found them in your office.""

I looked at Robert.

He was already writing.

Michael continued.

"She told me you had given her permission to manage the transfers.""

"I never did.""

"I know that now.""

"How much did you personally receive?""

Michael went quiet.

I waited.

"Michael?""

"Forty thousand.""

I closed my eyes.

Forty thousand dollars.

My own brother had accepted money connected to my dead wife's estate.

"Why?""

"Vanessa said it was payment for helping her organize the trust. She told me the money belonged to her.""

"Did you believe her?""

"I wanted to.""

I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.

"That's convenient.""

"Daniel, I made a terrible mistake.""

"Yes, you did.""

"I didn't know she was hurting the children.""

I looked at the documents scattered across Robert's desk.

"You knew she was accessing Rachel's money without authorization.""

Michael began crying harder.

"I thought it was temporary.""

"Temporary?""

"She said she would replace it once everything was settled.""

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

"Did she ever replace it?""

"No.""

"Where is the money now?""

"I don't know.""

I looked at Robert.

He gestured for me to ask another question.

"Do you still have the documents you used to access the account?""

Michael hesitated.

"Yes.""

"Where?""

"In my office.""

"Don't touch them. Don't delete anything. Don't contact Vanessa. Robert will arrange the next steps.""

Michael took a shaky breath.

"Daniel, will you ever forgive me?""

I stared out the window.

"I don't know.""

I ended the call.

For a moment, neither Robert nor I spoke.

Then he said:

"Your brother may have exposed himself to serious legal consequences. But if he's willing to cooperate, his records could be important.""

I nodded.

"What about the money transferred into my name?""

"We need to identify the account and establish whether it was opened or operated without your knowledge. Don't move any funds. Don't contact the bank informally about the disputed transactions. We'll preserve everything through the appropriate process.""

I sat down.

"Robert, I thought I knew my family.""

He looked at me.

"Sometimes people reveal themselves when they believe there is something valuable to gain.""

I shook my head.

"Rachel knew.""

Robert nodded.

"She clearly had concerns.""

I looked at the letter she'd left.

Please don't let Vanessa get to the documents first.

She had been trying to protect the children.

She had been trying to protect me.

And I had spent three years trusting the person she feared.

The next morning, Michael arrived at Robert's office.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled, his eyes were red, and he carried a large brown folder.

He sat across from me.

For several seconds, he didn't say anything.

Then he pushed the folder toward Robert.

"These are the records.""

Robert opened it.

Inside were bank access forms, transfer confirmations, and copies of the disputed authorization.

There were also emails between Michael and Vanessa.

Robert began reading.

One email caught his attention.

*From: Vanessa Carter*

Michael, please make sure the transfer is completed before the end of the month. Daniel must not see the account activity.

Michael had replied:

I still need confirmation that Rachel authorized this.

Vanessa's response was chilling.

You already have the signed form. Stop asking questions.

I looked at my brother.

"Why didn't you stop?""

He rubbed his face.

"Because I was afraid she'd expose what I'd done.""

"What had you done?""

"I'd already transferred the first amount.""

I looked away.

Robert continued reviewing the documents.

Then he found a transaction dated four days after Rachel's death.

The amount was $175,000.

The recipient was an account registered under a company called Northbridge Family Consulting.

I frowned.

"What is that?""

Robert checked the company information.

"An entity registered approximately six months before the transfer.""

"Who owns it?""

He searched through the documents.

Then he looked up.

"Vanessa.""

I felt sick.

The next transaction was $90,000.

Then $42,000.

Together, the records showed more than $300,000 moving out of the family trust.

Robert carefully placed the documents aside.

"Michael, did you know the funds were being transferred into Vanessa's company?""

Michael nodded.

"She told me it was a temporary holding account.""

"Did you ever verify that?""

"No.""

"Did Rachel authorize these transfers?""

Michael looked down.

"I never saw her do it.""

Robert closed the folder.

"That's important.""

I stared at my brother.

"Did Vanessa tell you why she wanted the money?""

He hesitated.

Then he said:

"She told me Rachel had promised it to her.""

I shook my head.

"Rachel left the money to the children.""

"I know.""

"Then why did you help?""

Michael covered his face.

"I thought I could fix it before anyone noticed.""

I stood.

"That's what people say when they know exactly what they're doing.""

Michael began crying.

"Daniel, please.""

I walked toward the window.

I couldn't look at him.

Not yet.

Then Robert asked another question.

"Michael, do you have any communication with Dr. Reed?""

Michael lowered his hands.

"Yes.""

"What kind?""

"Emails. A few messages.""

Robert leaned forward.

"Can you show us?""

Michael opened his laptop.

He searched through his email.

Then he found a conversation.

The subject line read:

*Rachel Carter — Authorization and Estate*

The first message was from Dr. Reed.

Vanessa says the family needs the medical authorization completed before the next review.

Michael had replied:

Rachel hasn't approved the financial paperwork.

Dr. Reed responded:

That is not my department. I only need the medical section completed.

I stared at the screen.

Robert continued scrolling.

Then another message appeared.

It was dated September 17.

The night of Rachel's final hospitalization.

*Vanessa:* Is the revised prescription ready?

*Dr. Reed:* Yes. But I need you to understand the risks.

*Vanessa:* You said this would make things easier.

*Dr. Reed:* I said it would make her more comfortable.

*Vanessa:* And afterward?

There was no response.

The next message came several hours later.

*Vanessa:* We need to talk about the agreement.

I looked at Robert.

"Is this enough?""

He shook his head.

"It's important evidence, but we need the original records and expert review. We cannot conclude from these messages alone what happened medically.""

Michael looked up.

"There's another email.""

He opened it.

The message was from Vanessa.

It was dated two weeks after Rachel's death.

Michael, the family trust must remain under temporary management until the children are older. Daniel is grieving and cannot make good decisions. Keep the account active.

Michael had replied:

The authorization expires in thirty days.

Vanessa answered:

Then we'll create another one.

I felt my stomach turn.

Robert saved the email.

Then he noticed an attachment.

A scanned document.

He opened it.

It was an authorization bearing my name.

My signature.

Except I had never signed it.

At the bottom was a witness signature.

Vanessa Carter.

And beneath that, another signature.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

I leaned closer.

The document was dated three days after Rachel's funeral.

It authorized Vanessa to manage certain assets and make decisions concerning the children's financial arrangements.

I looked at Robert.

"That's not my signature.""

He nodded.

"I can see several differences from the genuine signature on your identification documents. We'll arrange an independent examination.""

Michael spoke quietly.

"Vanessa said you signed it at home.""

I turned toward him.

"Was I home that day?""

He checked his records.

Then he shook his head.

"No.""

I remembered.

I had been in another state attending a business conference.

Robert looked at the date.

"That is significant. We should obtain your travel records and preserve the original document.""

I stared at the signature.

Someone had copied my name.

Someone had used it to access money belonging to my children.

And someone had convinced my own brother to help.

But there was still one question.

Why had Dr. Reed signed it?

At 2:30 p.m., Robert received a call from the hospital's legal department.

The hospital had agreed to preserve the remaining medical records and cooperate with a formal review.

They also confirmed that Dr. Reed had been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

I thought that would make me feel better.

It didn't.

Because the man who had treated my wife was still the only person who could explain the medication changes.

And he wasn't talking.

Then Mark called.

"Daniel, we found Vanessa.""

"Where?""

"She's at the old house.""

I froze.

"What old house?""

"Rachel's investment property.""

The house mentioned in her letter.

The one she had told us not to let Vanessa access.

"Why is she there?""

"She's been there for approximately forty minutes. The property records show that she still has a key.""

I looked at Robert.

"Can she legally enter?""

"Not if the ownership and access rights are disputed in the manner we're now investigating. But don't confront her. Let the appropriate authorities handle the situation.""

I nodded.

Mark continued.

"There's another issue.""

"What?""

"Someone removed a file cabinet from the property last night.""

My heart skipped.

"What was inside?""

"We don't know. But the neighbor saw a moving van.""

I closed my eyes.

Vanessa was still trying to remove evidence.

"Can you identify the moving company?""

"Yes. We're checking the records.""

Robert took the phone.

"Mark, please document everything. Do not enter the property or seize anything without proper authority.""

He ended the call.

Then he looked at me.

"We need to act quickly, but carefully.""

I stood.

"I'm going there.""

Robert shook his head.

"Not alone.""

When we arrived at the old house, Vanessa was standing on the front porch.

She looked surprised to see me.

Then she smiled.

A cold, controlled smile.

"Daniel.""

I stepped out of the car.

"What are you doing here?""

She folded her arms.

"Collecting my belongings.""

"This property belongs to the children's trust.""

"Not according to the documents I have.""

Robert stepped forward.

"Mrs. Carter, any disputed ownership documents will be reviewed. You should not remove anything further.""

Vanessa laughed.

"You're both acting like I stole something.""

I looked at her.

"Did you transfer more than three hundred thousand dollars out of Rachel's trust?""

Her smile disappeared.

She looked at Michael, who had arrived in a separate car.

Then back at me.

"Michael told you?""

"He gave us the records.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Traitor.""

Michael lowered his head.

I took a step closer.

"Did you forge my signature?""

"No.""

"Did you create a company to receive the money?""

"That money was mine.""

"Rachel left it to the children.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Rachel left a lot of things she had no right to promise.""

I stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

She looked at me for several seconds.

Then she smiled again.

"Ask your brother what Rachel told him before she died.""

I turned toward Michael.

He looked confused.

"What?""

Vanessa reached into her handbag.

She removed a folded piece of paper.

Then she held it up.

"Rachel didn't trust either of you. She knew exactly what kind of men you were.""

I took the paper.

It was a handwritten statement.

Rachel's name appeared at the bottom.

But something about it looked wrong.

The handwriting was uneven.

The date was inconsistent.

Robert examined it.

"This document will need verification.""

Vanessa shrugged.

"Believe whatever you want.""

I looked at her.

"What are you hiding?""

Her eyes hardened.

Then she said something that made Michael step backward.

"Your wife wasn't just trying to protect the children, Daniel. She was trying to protect them from you.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"What are you talking about?""

Vanessa leaned closer.

"Rachel knew what happened to the money before she died.""

I stared at her.

"What money?""

She smiled.

"The money you thought was gone.""

Then she looked at Michael.

"And he knows exactly where it went.""

Michael shook his head.

"No.""

Vanessa continued.

"Tell him.""

"Stop.""

"Tell your brother what you did with Rachel's original trust certificate.""

Michael's face had gone white.

I turned toward him.

"What trust certificate?""

He looked at me.

Then he whispered:

"I didn't know what it was when I gave it to her.""

I felt the ground shift beneath my feet.

"What did you give Vanessa?""

Michael's voice broke.

"The original document that proves who controls the trust.""

Vanessa smiled.

"And now, Daniel, I have something you can't take away from me.""

Robert stepped forward.

"That is not how ownership works.""

Vanessa ignored him.

She looked directly into my eyes.

"There's one more thing you should know about Rachel's final night.""

I waited.

She smiled.

"She didn't die believing she was alone.""

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa leaned closer and whispered:

"She knew exactly who was in that hospital room when her final medication was administered.""

Then she turned and walked inside.

I stood frozen on the porch.

Because for the first time, I realized that Vanessa might not be the only person who knew what had happened to Rachel.

And the person who knew the most might have been standing beside me all along.

Michael.

That night, I sat in Robert's office while he reviewed the disputed trust documents.

My brother sat across from me.

He looked like a man who had finally understood the consequences of every decision he'd made.

"Michael," I said quietly.

He raised his head.

"Did you go into Rachel's hospital room that night?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Vanessa called me. She said Rachel wanted to see me.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"What happened when you arrived?""

He rubbed his face.

"Rachel was awake. She looked weak, but she was talking.""

"What did she say?""

Michael's eyes filled.

"She asked me whether I had signed the authorization.""

I swallowed.

"What did you tell her?""

"I told her I had.""

"And?""

He looked down.

"She started crying.""

My jaw tightened.

"What did she say?""

Michael whispered:

"She said, 'Michael, you have no idea what you've done.''"

I closed my eyes.

Then he added:

"She told me Vanessa wasn't trying to protect the family. She was trying to take it apart.""

I stared at him.

"Did you tell Vanessa what Rachel said?""

He nodded.

"And what did she do?""

Michael began shaking.

"She told me to leave the room.""

I waited.

"Did you?""

"Yes.""

I looked away.

For several seconds, the office was silent.

Then Michael said:

"Daniel, there's something I haven't told you.""

I turned back.

"What?""

He looked directly at me.

"Rachel asked me to call you that night.""

I froze.

"Did you?""

He shook his head.

"Vanessa stopped me.""

"Why?""

Michael's voice cracked.

"She said if I called you, she'd tell the police that I'd stolen the trust money.""

I stared at him.

"And you believed her?""

He nodded.

I stood slowly.

My brother looked up.

"Daniel...""

I shook my head.

"Don't.""

He lowered his eyes.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Evelyn Price.

Mr. Carter, I have just received information from the hospital archives. There is a second medication administration record that was never included in the original file.

A second message followed.

It identifies the person who was physically present when the medication was administered.

I stared at the screen.

Then I opened the attachment.

The record contained a handwritten name.

I read it once.

Then again.

My hands began trembling.

Because the name wasn't Vanessa's.

It wasn't Dr. Reed's.

May you like

It was my brother's.

Michael Carter.
