Chapter 9: The Brother Who Entered Rachel's Hospital Room

I couldn't speak.

The document remained open on my phone.

The date was September 17, three years earlier.

The time was 11:42 p.m.

And beneath the medication administration entry was the name of the person recorded as being present.

*Michael Carter.*

I slowly lifted my eyes.

My brother was sitting across from me.

He looked at the phone.

Then at my face.

And immediately began shaking his head.

"Daniel, I can explain.""

I placed the phone on the desk.

"Did you administer medication to Rachel?""

"No.""

"Your name is on the record.""

"I know what it says.""

"Then explain it.""

Michael rubbed both hands over his face.

"I didn't give her anything.""

Robert leaned forward.

"Michael, did you sign the medication administration record?""

"No.""

"Did you enter Rachel's hospital room at 11:42 p.m.?""

Michael swallowed.

"Yes.""

I felt something break inside me.

"What were you doing there?""

He looked at me.

"Vanessa asked me to help.""

"Help with what?""

"She said Rachel needed someone to sign a document.""

I stared at him.

"What document?""

"I don't know.""

"Michael!""

He flinched.

Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I kept this.""

Robert immediately took it.

It was a visitor pass.

The date matched the medical record.

Michael's name was printed across the top.

He had been inside Rachel's hospital room that night.

There was no question about it.

I stood and walked toward the window.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Michael's voice broke.

"Because I was scared.""

"Of Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

"You're my brother.""

"I know.""

"You could have called me!""

"I know!""

He stood suddenly.

"I know, Daniel! I've thought about it every day for three years!""

His voice echoed through the office.

Then he lowered his head.

"I made a terrible mistake.""

Robert gestured for him to sit.

"Let's establish exactly what happened.""

Michael sat down.

He took several breaths.

Then he began.

Michael said Vanessa had called him shortly after Rachel was admitted.

She told him Rachel was deteriorating and needed help completing some financial documents.

He had already helped her access the family trust.

He had already witnessed one disputed authorization.

And by then, he was afraid to refuse her.

When he arrived at the hospital, Vanessa was waiting near the elevator.

"She needs to sign something," Vanessa told him.

Michael asked what it was.

She said it was another authorization allowing her to manage Rachel's affairs.

He refused.

"Rachel hasn't approved the first one," he told her.

Vanessa became angry.

"Michael, you have already made this difficult enough.""

He said he wanted to speak to Rachel directly.

Vanessa agreed.

She took him into the room.

Rachel was awake.

She looked at him and immediately understood why he was there.

"Did you sign it?"" she'd asked.

Michael lowered his head.

"Yes.""

Rachel began crying.

"Michael, why?""

He told her Vanessa had said it was necessary.

Rachel shook her head.

"She lied to you.""

Then Rachel asked him to call me.

Michael said he reached for his phone.

But Vanessa stopped him.

She told him that if he involved me, she'd expose the financial transfers and claim he had stolen the money himself.

He backed down.

And then, according to Michael, Dr. Reed entered the room.

He was carrying a small medical tray.

Vanessa stepped aside.

Dr. Reed looked at Rachel.

"Mrs. Carter, this should help you rest.""

Rachel immediately shook her head.

"I don't want anything changed.""

Dr. Reed said the medication was part of her treatment plan.

Rachel asked to see the order.

He refused.

Then Vanessa told Michael to wait outside.

He left.

But he didn't go far.

He stood in the hallway.

A few minutes later, he heard Rachel calling for help.

He turned toward the room.

Then a nurse came out and asked him to move away from the doorway.

He waited near the elevators.

When Vanessa finally emerged, she was holding a folder.

She told him Rachel had fallen asleep.

Then she said:

"Everything is settled.""

Michael looked at me.

"I didn't know what that meant.""

I stared at him.

"What happened after that?""

He swallowed.

"Vanessa drove me home.""

"Did you ask about Rachel?""

"Yes.""

"What did she say?""

"She said Rachel was comfortable.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"And the next morning?""

"She called and told me Rachel had died.""

I closed my eyes.

For three years, I had believed my wife had passed away peacefully after a medical decline.

Now I was hearing that my brother had been in her room on the night she died.

That he had helped Vanessa obtain financial control.

That he had heard Rachel asking for help.

And that he had walked away.

I turned toward him.

"Did you ever tell the police?""

He shook his head.

"Did you tell me?""

"No.""

"Did you tell Mom?""

"No.""

I looked away.

Robert spoke quietly.

"Michael, did you actually see Dr. Reed administer the medication?""

"No.""

"Did you see Vanessa touch the medication?""

"No.""

"Did you see anyone alter the records?""

Michael shook his head.

"Then we need to be careful about what we conclude. Your presence is documented, but it does not establish that you administered anything.""

I nodded.

But I still couldn't look at my brother.

The following morning, Michael agreed to provide a formal statement.

Robert arranged for the relevant authorities to receive the documents, the visitor pass, and the recovered communications.

Evelyn Price also provided her original incident report.

The hospital confirmed that the second medication record had been excluded from the copy previously provided to the family.

They said the omission was being investigated.

But there was something else.

The second record contained a handwritten amendment.

A medication dose had been changed.

The amendment was attributed to Dr. Reed.

However, the electronic timestamp showed that the change had been entered after Rachel's death.

Robert examined the document.

"This is concerning.""

I leaned forward.

"Could someone have changed the record afterward?""

"Yes. But we'll need the original system audit trail to establish who did it and when.""

I stared at the page.

"Can the hospital provide that?""

"They've agreed to preserve it.""

Then Evelyn called.

She had discovered another entry in her personal notes.

A note she'd written immediately after Rachel's death.

It read:

Patient requested that no medication be administered without direct explanation. Family member Vanessa Carter informed. Dr. Reed notified.

Beneath that was another sentence.

Patient appeared frightened when Vanessa entered the room.

I looked at Robert.

"That proves Rachel was afraid of her.""

"It supports that concern," he replied.

"But we still need to establish exactly what happened medically.""

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

I answered.

"Hello?""

"Daniel.""

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"What do you want?""

"We need to talk.""

"Everything that needs to be discussed can go through the attorneys.""

She laughed softly.

"You really think Robert can protect you?""

I looked at him.

"What are you talking about?""

"You've been digging through documents that you don't understand.""

"Then explain them.""

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa said:

"Come to the old house. Alone.""

"No.""

"Daniel, there are things about Rachel you deserve to know.""

"I already know enough.""

"Do you?""

Her voice sharpened.

"Do you know why Rachel changed her will? Do you know why she wanted to remove you from certain accounts? Do you know what she told Michael?""

I glanced at my brother.

He looked up.

"You're lying," I said.

"Then ask Michael what happened in the hospital room.""

"I already have.""

Silence.

Then Vanessa laughed.

"Has he told you everything?""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What else is there?""

"Come to the old house.""

She ended the call.

Robert immediately shook his head.

"Don't go.""

"I wasn't planning to.""

But Michael had gone pale.

He was staring at the floor.

I turned toward him.

"What does she mean?""

He didn't answer.

"Michael.""

He finally looked up.

"There's another recording.""

My heart skipped.

"What recording?""

"From the hospital.""

"Who made it?""

"Rachel.""

I stepped closer.

"What are you talking about?""

Michael took out his phone.

He searched through his files.

Then he opened an old email.

An attachment appeared.

The filename was simple.

*Rachel_Final_Message.wav*

I stared at it.

"Where did you get that?""

"Vanessa sent it to me the day after Rachel died. She told me to keep it in case you ever questioned what happened.""

I looked at Robert.

He leaned forward.

"Why didn't you tell us?""

Michael swallowed.

"Because I was afraid of what it contained.""

Robert carefully saved the file.

"We'll have it examined and preserve the original.""

I nodded.

Then Michael looked at me.

"Daniel, I think Vanessa wanted you to hear it eventually.""

"Why?""

He lowered his voice.

"Because she believed it would make you stop asking questions.""

We listened to the recording that evening in Robert's office.

The first few seconds contained static.

Then Rachel's voice came through.

"Michael?""

A man's voice answered.

It was my brother.

"I'm here.""

"Did you call Daniel?""

There was a pause.

"No.""

Rachel sighed.

"Why?""

Michael's voice was quiet.

"Vanessa said...""

"Michael, please.""

I closed my eyes.

Rachel sounded exhausted.

But she was clear.

She knew what she was saying.

"Please call my husband.""

Michael said nothing.

Then Rachel continued.

"She's lying to you. She's been lying to both of us.""

A door opened.

A woman's voice entered.

Vanessa.

"Rachel, you need to rest.""

Rachel immediately replied.

"Get out.""

Vanessa laughed.

"You're making everyone miserable.""

"Get out of my room.""

Then came a sound of movement.

Michael spoke.

"Vanessa, maybe we should—"

"Stay out of this.""

The recording continued.

Rachel's voice became quieter.

"Daniel knows about the trust.""

Vanessa answered:

"No, he doesn't.""

"He will.""

"Not if you stop interfering.""

There was a long pause.

Then Rachel said something that made me stop breathing.

"Do you really think he won't find out what you did to your mother?""

The room went completely silent.

Vanessa's voice became sharp.

"Don't you dare bring my mother into this.""

Rachel continued.

"I saw the records.""

Vanessa said nothing.

Then Rachel whispered:

"You did it before. And now you're trying to do it again.""

A chair scraped.

Michael spoke.

"Vanessa, what is she talking about?""

The recording ended.

I stared at the screen.

Robert slowly removed his glasses.

"Daniel...""

I raised my hand.

"Play the last part again.""

He did.

Rachel's voice.

You did it before. And now you're trying to do it again.

I looked at Michael.

"What did Vanessa do to her mother?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

"Did you ever ask?""

"Yes. She said her mother had a heart condition.""

I stared at the recording.

Then another thought came to me.

"Does Vanessa know we have this?""

Michael nodded.

"Yes. She sent it to me.""

"Why?""

"She said it proved Rachel was confused and paranoid.""

Robert looked at the audio file.

"Actually, it may establish that Rachel was attempting to communicate a specific concern.""

He saved another copy.

Then my phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Mr. Carter, this is Dr. Samuel Reed.""

I stood.

"What do you want?""

"I need to meet with you.""

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa has been lying to you.""

I looked at Robert.

He gestured for me to put the call on speaker.

I did.

Dr. Reed continued.

"I know you believe I was involved in what happened to your wife. But I need you to understand that I was not acting alone.""

Robert immediately interrupted.

"Dr. Reed, this is Daniel Carter's attorney. Any discussion should take place through legal counsel.""

"I understand. But there's something Daniel needs to hear.""

I leaned toward the phone.

"What?""

Dr. Reed took a shaky breath.

"Vanessa told me Rachel had agreed to the medication change. She showed me a signed authorization.""

"Was it genuine?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you verify it?""

Silence.

Then he said:

"No.""

My jaw tightened.

"Did you administer the medication?""

"I followed what I believed was the treatment plan.""

"Did Rachel consent?""

He didn't answer.

I felt sick.

Then Dr. Reed continued.

"Mr. Carter, there's something else. The night your wife died, I received a phone call from Vanessa.""

"What did she say?""

"She asked me whether the medication would affect Rachel's ability to make legal decisions.""

I closed my eyes.

Robert's expression hardened.

Dr. Reed continued.

"I told her that was not a question I could answer. She became angry.""

"What happened afterward?""

"She threatened to report me unless I signed a statement confirming Rachel had been unable to make decisions.""

I stared at the phone.

"Did you sign it?""

A long silence followed.

Then he whispered:

"Yes.""

I felt my hands go cold.

"Why?""

"Because she had evidence that could destroy my career.""

Robert leaned forward.

"What evidence?""

Dr. Reed's voice became barely audible.

"Payments.""

The room went still.

"What payments?"" I asked.

"Money transferred to an account connected to my consulting company.""

"From Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

"More than eighty thousand dollars.""

Robert looked at me.

We already knew about the payments.

But now the doctor was admitting that Vanessa had used them as leverage.

I asked one final question.

"Dr. Reed, did you knowingly administer medication against Rachel's wishes?""

He took a long breath.

"I believed I was treating her. But I should have verified the authorization. I should have stopped when she objected.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you know she was afraid of Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

The answer came immediately.

I stared at the phone.

"Then why didn't you protect her?""

He began crying.

"Because I was afraid of losing everything.""

The call ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Robert said:

"We need to preserve this call and make sure the appropriate authorities receive the information.""

I nodded.

But before we could do anything else, a new message arrived.

It was from Vanessa.

A photograph.

She was standing inside our house.

Behind her was Nia's bedroom door.

The message contained only seven words.

You still don't know what Rachel left behind.

I immediately called Mrs. Thompson.

She answered.

"Daniel?""

"Where are the children?""

"With me. Why?""

"Is Vanessa there?""

"No. She hasn't been here.""

I closed my eyes.

Then Mrs. Thompson added:

"Daniel, I think you should come home. Someone has been trying to get into your house.""

I stood.

"Who?""

She hesitated.

"Your brother.""

I turned toward Michael.

He looked horrified.

And then Robert noticed something on the photograph Vanessa had sent.

In the background, barely visible through the open bedroom door, was a small wooden box.

The same wooden box Rachel had given Nia when she was a baby.

I stared at it.

Rachel had left something else.

May you like

Something that Vanessa had apparently been searching for.

And whatever it was, she believed it was still inside my daughter's bedroom.
