Amused

Chapter 4: The Medical File Vanessa Tried to Hide

"Dad... I think I know where Mom hid it.""

Malik was standing halfway down the staircase, one hand gripping the wooden railing.

I turned toward him.

"Where, son?""

He glanced at Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

"Malik, don't.""

My son swallowed.

"It's in the storage room.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"That's enough. You're confused.""

"No, I'm not.""

"Malik, go upstairs!""

He flinched, but this time he didn't move.

I walked toward him.

"Tell me what you saw.""

Malik looked at Robert before answering.

"Last month, I went into Mom's office looking for my school laptop charger. She wasn't home. I heard something fall in the storage room, so I went to check.""

"What did you find?""

"A black suitcase. It was open.""

Vanessa's expression tightened.

Malik continued.

"There were papers inside. Some had Grandma's name. Some had Mom's name. And there was a folder with Rachel written on it.""

My heart began pounding.

"Did you open it?""

"Only a little.""

"What did you see?""

"Medical papers. Hospital papers. And a photograph of Mom talking to a doctor.""

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

It was a strained, unnatural sound.

"Daniel, this is absurd. You're seriously going to believe a fourteen-year-old who spends half his time playing video games?""

Robert closed his briefcase.

"Mrs. Carter, I suggest you stop trying to intimidate the children.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"This is my home!""

"And those are Daniel's children. Their welfare is our immediate concern.""

I looked at Robert.

"Let's find the suitcase.""

Vanessa moved directly in front of the storage room hallway.

"No.""

I stopped.

"Move.""

"You cannot just search through my personal belongings!""

"Then tell me why you have my dead wife's medical records.""

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I took out my phone and called the investigator.

"Mark, I need you at my house. Now. And bring the documentation concerning the old property.""

I ended the call.

Robert quietly pulled me aside.

"Daniel, don't touch anything that could be evidence. We need to handle this properly.""

I nodded.

Then I turned toward Vanessa.

"Nobody is accusing you of a crime without evidence. But you're not going to make my children afraid to speak.""

She folded her arms.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you?""

I stared at her.

"Enjoying what?""

"Watching me defend myself. Making me look like some monster.""

I pointed toward the dining room.

"Your stepdaughter asked you for food tonight. You told her no while eating enough seafood to feed an entire family.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Here we go again.""

"No. We're not going back to pretending that didn't happen.""

Robert suggested that Nia and Malik stay upstairs while we waited for the investigator.

I agreed.

But as I turned to leave, Nia appeared at the top of the stairs.

"Daddy?""

I looked up.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Can I have something to eat now?""

The question struck me harder than any accusation Vanessa could have made.

I walked straight into the kitchen.

"Of course.""

I opened the refrigerator and found leftover chicken, vegetables, and a container of rice.

I warmed everything up.

Then I made two plates.

Nia sat at the kitchen island while Malik pulled a chair beside her.

I placed a glass of milk in front of each child.

"Eat as much as you want.""

Nia looked at the food.

"All of it?""

I pulled out a chair.

"All of it.""

She took a small bite.

Then another.

After a few seconds, she began eating faster.

Malik quietly pushed his own plate toward her.

"Here. You can have some of mine.""

I shook my head.

"You both have enough. Nobody needs to give up their dinner anymore.""

Nia smiled faintly.

For the first time in months, my children ate without looking toward the hallway every few seconds.

But I couldn't stop thinking about the suitcase.

Mark arrived twenty-five minutes later.

He was a broad-shouldered man in his early forties who had spent the previous three weeks documenting Vanessa's behavior.

After hearing Malik's account, he suggested we photograph the storage room and have the attorney present before opening any locked containers.

Vanessa watched from the living room.

She hadn't spoken in nearly ten minutes.

When Mark entered the storage room, he found several boxes, an old vacuum cleaner, holiday decorations, and a black suitcase pushed behind a stack of folded blankets.

Malik pointed.

"That's it.""

Mark looked at me.

"Is this yours?""

"No.""

Vanessa answered from behind us.

"It's mine.""

Robert turned toward her.

"Then perhaps you can explain what's inside.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Personal documents. Nothing relevant.""

Mark photographed the suitcase.

He noticed a small luggage lock.

"Do you have the key?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Mark looked at the combination.

"Daniel, I'd recommend we leave it secured and arrange appropriate legal steps before opening it.""

I agreed.

But then Malik spoke again.

"There's something else.""

Everyone turned.

He pointed toward a cardboard box beside the suitcase.

"Mom put something in there last week.""

Vanessa's head snapped around.

"Malik!""

My son stepped backward.

I moved between them.

"Don't shout at him.""

Mark opened the box carefully.

Inside were old photographs, several envelopes, and a small electronic device.

A digital voice recorder.

Robert picked up one of the envelopes.

It was addressed to Vanessa.

The return address belonged to St. Mary's Hospital.

The date was from three years earlier.

The same hospital where Rachel had died.

Robert examined the envelope.

"Daniel, I think we should preserve this.""

Mark photographed it and carefully placed it aside.

Then he examined the recorder.

"Do you recognize this?""

I shook my head.

Malik looked at it.

"That's the one I saw in the suitcase.""

Vanessa finally lost control.

"STOP!""

She rushed toward the box.

Mark immediately stepped between her and the documents.

"Ma'am, please step back.""

"Those are private!""

"Then we can establish their relevance through the proper process.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Daniel, you need to stop this.""

I stared at her.

"Tell me what's in the suitcase.""

She shook her head.

"I can't.""

The answer made the room go silent.

Robert slowly raised his head.

"What do you mean you can't?""

Vanessa looked at him.

Then at me.

Her eyes began filling with tears.

"Because if you find it, everything will be ruined.""

My phone vibrated.

It was a message from an unfamiliar number.

*Daniel, my name is Laura Bennett. I was Rachel's nurse at St. Mary's.

I've been trying to contact you for three years. Please call me before Vanessa knows I've reached you.*

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

She was watching my face.

"What is it?"" she asked.

I put my phone away.

"Nothing.""

For the first time that night, I lied to my wife.

Because I had a feeling the truth was about to become much worse.

Twenty minutes later, I stood outside on the back porch with my phone pressed against my ear.

Laura answered almost immediately.

"Mr. Carter?""

"Yes. Who are you?""

"My name is Laura Bennett. I was one of your wife's nurses during her final hospitalization.""

I gripped the railing.

"Why are you contacting me now?""

She took a shaky breath.

"Because I saw something in Rachel's medical records that never made sense.""

"What?""

"Three years ago, I reported a discrepancy involving medication administered during one of her hospital stays.""

My heart began racing.

"What kind of discrepancy?""

"I can't discuss protected medical information over an unsecured call. But I can tell you that the medication record did not match the physician's original order.""

I closed my eyes.

"Are you saying someone gave Rachel the wrong medication?""

"I'm saying the discrepancy was serious enough that I documented it and raised concerns internally.""

"Who was responsible?""

There was a pause.

Then Laura said something that made my blood run cold.

"Your current wife was present when the medication was administered.""

I gripped the phone harder.

"Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

"At the time, I was told the issue had been resolved. Later, I discovered that part of my report was missing from the file.""

I couldn't speak.

Laura continued.

"Mr. Carter, I don't know whether this was an error or something intentional. But Rachel asked me to keep a copy of a document before she died.""

"What document?""

"A handwritten note. She told me that if anything happened to her, I should make sure her husband received it.""

I looked through the kitchen window.

Vanessa was standing beside the dining table, staring at the storage room.

"What did the note say?""

Laura's voice dropped.

"It said, 'Don't let Vanessa make decisions about my medication.''"

I felt the world tilt beneath my feet.

Then Laura added:

"There's something else. Rachel wasn't the only person who asked questions about that medication.""

"Who else?""

"Dr. Reed.""

The call ended a few seconds later.

I remained outside, staring into the dark garden.

Then I heard the back door open.

Robert stepped onto the porch.

"Daniel?""

I turned.

He studied my face.

"What happened?""

I told him everything.

He listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he looked through the window toward Vanessa.

"Daniel, we need to be very careful. We cannot assume a medication discrepancy proves wrongdoing. But we absolutely need the complete medical records.""

I nodded.

Then I remembered something.

"The doctor. Samuel Reed. He's been calling Vanessa.""

Robert's expression tightened.

"That needs to be investigated immediately.""

My phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a message from Laura.

I found the original file. But Daniel, you need to know something before I send it.

A second message appeared.

Rachel wasn't afraid of dying. She was afraid of what Vanessa would do to the children after she was gone.

I stared at the screen.

Then I heard a crash inside the house.

Robert and I rushed through the back door.

Vanessa was standing beside the kitchen counter.

A broken glass lay on the floor.

May you like

And the black suitcase was no longer in the storage room.

Someone had taken it.
