Chapter 2: The Secret My Son Had Been Hiding

For several seconds, nobody moved.

I looked at Malik.

He was staring at the table, his hands folded tightly in his lap.

"What happened to your sister?"" I asked.

Vanessa immediately stepped between us.

"Daniel, you're making a mistake. Malik has been difficult lately. He's been sneaking around, taking things, and encouraging Nia to disobey me.""

I didn't take my eyes off my son.

"Malik, come sit beside me.""

He hesitated.

Then he moved his chair closer.

Vanessa let out an angry breath.

"This is ridiculous.""

I pointed toward the hallway.

"Go to the living room, Vanessa.""

She blinked.

"Excuse me?""

"I want to speak with my children privately.""

"This is my house too.""

"And they're my children. I'm asking you to leave the room.""

For a moment, I thought she might refuse.

Then she picked up her wineglass and walked toward the kitchen.

But before she disappeared, she turned around.

"Remember, Daniel. You're hearing only one side of this story.""

I waited until her footsteps faded.

Then I turned to Malik.

"Son, nobody is going to punish you for telling me the truth.""

He looked at Nia.

"Can she stay?""

"Of course.""

I moved my chair closer to both children.

"Tell me what happened.""

Malik rubbed his palms against his jeans.

"It started last summer.""

I frowned.

"Last summer?""

He nodded.

"Mom started ordering food for herself. Seafood, steak, expensive desserts. She'd say she didn't want us touching it because it was for her.""

"Was that all?""

"No.""

His voice became smaller.

"She started making Nia do chores before she could eat.""

My jaw tightened.

"What kind of chores?""

"Cleaning the kitchen. Folding clothes. Washing the dishes.""

I looked at my ten-year-old daughter.

"Nia, is that true?""

She nodded.

"Sometimes she makes me clean the whole kitchen.""

"Even when you're hungry?""

Nia's eyes filled.

"She says I have to finish first.""

I felt sick.

"How often?""

"Almost every day.""

Malik leaned forward.

"Sometimes Nia would finish everything, and Mom would tell her there wasn't any dinner left.""

"Then what would happen?""

"I'd give her my food.""

I looked at my son.

"Your mother knew?""

He nodded.

"She caught me once.""

"What did she do?""

Malik swallowed.

"She took my plate away and told me that if I wanted to feed Nia, I could go hungry with her.""

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

My son had been sacrificing his own dinner to make sure his little sister ate.

And I hadn't known.

"Why didn't you call me?""

Malik's face crumpled.

"I tried.""

I opened my eyes.

"What?""

"I called you once from school. Mom found out.""

"How?""

"She checked my phone.""

He looked down.

"She said if I kept telling you lies, she'd make you live with your grandmother.""

I frowned.

"Your grandmother?""

"She said you would believe her. She said you were always working and didn't have time to deal with us.""

I felt my chest tighten.

Vanessa had used my job against my children.

I had spent years building my business so that my children would never have to worry about money.

Yet somehow, the more I worked, the more power I'd given someone else over their daily lives.

Nia quietly touched my sleeve.

"Daddy?""

I turned toward her.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Are you angry?""

The question nearly broke me.

"Not with you. Never with you.""

She stared at the envelope resting beside her plate.

"Is the house really mine?""

I smiled gently.

"Yes. It's yours. It's part of a trust for your future.""

"Can I have a room with pink curtains?""

I laughed softly.

"You can have whatever curtains you want.""

She looked down.

Then she whispered:

"Can Malik have a room too?""

I looked at my son.

He tried to hide his smile.

"That's a good idea," I said.

Nia nodded.

"I don't want to live somewhere without him.""

I kissed the top of her head.

"Then you won't have to.""

For the first time that evening, both children seemed to breathe.

But I still needed answers.

"Malik, you mentioned recordings. What did you mean?""

He looked toward the kitchen.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out an old black phone.

It was cracked near the charging port, and the screen had a long scratch running diagonally across it.

"Where did you get that?""

"It's my old phone.""

I recognized it.

I'd given it to him when he was twelve, before replacing it with a newer model.

"Why do you still have it?""

"Because I recorded something.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

Malik unlocked the phone.

He scrolled through several folders before opening an audio file.

"I started recording because nobody believed me.""

He pressed play.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then Vanessa's voice came through the speaker.

"Put that back.""

A child's voice answered.

It was Nia.

"But I'm hungry.""

"I don't care. That food is for guests.""

"There aren't any guests.""

A sharp sound followed.

Then Vanessa spoke again.

"Don't argue with me. Your father isn't here to rescue you.""

I felt my hands curl into fists.

The recording continued.

"Go upstairs. You can eat tomorrow.""

Then there was silence.

I looked at Malik.

"How many recordings do you have?""

"Seven.""

"Seven?""

He nodded.

"Some are from the kitchen. Some are from the hallway.""

"Why did you keep them?""

"Because I knew you wouldn't believe me if I didn't have proof.""

I stared at my son.

He was fourteen years old.

He shouldn't have needed evidence to convince his father that his little sister was being mistreated.

I reached across the table and took his hand.

"I believe you.""

His eyes filled.

"I tried to tell you, Dad.""

"I know.""

"I really tried.""

"I know, son.""

He finally broke down.

I pulled him into my arms.

He cried against my shoulder, trying desperately to keep quiet.

Nia wrapped her arms around both of us.

For a moment, the three of us stayed that way.

Then a voice came from behind us.

"Give me that phone.""

Vanessa was standing at the dining room entrance.

Her face was pale.

Malik immediately pulled away from me.

"Mom...""

"Give it to me.""

I stood.

"Don't come near him.""

Vanessa pointed at the phone.

"That recording is illegal!""

I looked at her.

"Is that what you're worried about?""

"You don't understand. He's been recording private conversations without my permission.""

"Then you shouldn't have anything to hide.""

She laughed bitterly.

"Daniel, you have no idea what these children have put me through.""

I stared at her.

"What have they put you through?""

She threw her hands up.

"Nia is spoiled! Malik constantly interferes! They think they can do whatever they want because you're always buying them things!""

I looked at Nia.

She was holding her brother's hand.

"She's ten years old, Vanessa.""

"And she knows exactly how to get sympathy!""

I took one step forward.

"She asked you for food.""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"Because she's greedy.""

The word hung in the air.

My daughter looked down.

I felt something inside me go cold.

"Don't call my daughter that again.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"You're making me the villain because of one bad dinner.""

"One bad dinner?""

I picked up the investigator's report.

"These records cover months.""

She snatched a page from the table.

"These are just photographs! They don't prove anything!""

"There's a timeline. Statements. Records. And now, there are recordings.""

Her eyes moved toward Malik.

Then something changed.

She wasn't looking at him like an angry stepmother anymore.

She was looking at him like someone who had discovered a witness.

"Malik," she said softly.

My son stiffened.

"Come here.""

He shook his head.

Vanessa's voice became sweeter.

"Baby, you know I love you. You know your father is misunderstanding everything.""

Malik said nothing.

She continued.

"Remember the promise I made you?""

He suddenly looked terrified.

I turned toward him.

"What promise?""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Nothing.""

But Malik had already started shaking.

"Tell me," I said gently.

He looked at his mother.

Then he looked at me.

And whispered:

"She said if I ever told you about the food, she'd tell you what really happened to Mom.""

My entire body went still.

Rachel.

My first wife.

Nia and Malik's mother.

She had died three years earlier.

A sudden illness, according to everything I had been told.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What does she know about Rachel?""

Vanessa's face changed.

For the first time, she seemed unable to find an answer.

"Daniel, don't listen to him.""

I stepped closer.

"What does she know?""

Vanessa backed away.

Then she reached for the investigator's report and pulled out a folded photograph.

She looked at it for two seconds.

Her fingers began trembling.

I recognized the woman in the photograph immediately.

Rachel.

But there was someone standing beside her.

Someone I had never expected to see.

Vanessa.

And on the back of the photograph, in Rachel's handwriting, were six words:

If anything happens to me, ask Vanessa.

May you like

I looked up.

My wife was already reaching for the door.
