Chapter 8: The Nurse Who Was There That Night
"You're the woman on the recording?""
I stood beside Robert's desk, holding the phone against my ear.
"Yes, Mr. Carter.""
"Why are you calling me now?""
Evelyn Price took a shaky breath.
"Because I have been waiting three years for someone to find the original documents.""
Robert gestured for me to put the call on speaker.
I did.
"Ms. Price," Robert said, "I'm Daniel Carter's attorney. Before we discuss anything, I need to know whether you're willing to provide a formal statement.""
"I am.""
"Do you understand that your statement may be used in a legal investigation?""
"Yes.""
Robert looked at me.
I asked the question that had been eating at me.
"What happened to my wife?""
Evelyn went quiet.
Then she said:
"I don't know whether Rachel's death was caused by a medical error or deliberate interference. But I know that the medication records were altered after her final admission.""
I closed my eyes.
"What do you mean altered?""
"I was working the night shift. I noticed that the medication listed on the administration chart didn't match the medication in the original physician's order.""
"Did you report it?""
"Yes.""
"What happened?""
"I was told not to interfere. Dr. Reed said the discrepancy had been reviewed.""
"Was it?""
"Not properly.""
Robert leaned toward the phone.
"Who told you to stop investigating?""
"Dr. Reed. And later, the hospital administrator.""
"Did Vanessa have anything to do with it?""
Evelyn hesitated.
"She was present during several discussions.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Was she allowed to make medical decisions for Rachel?""
"No. Not according to the records I saw.""
Robert wrote something down.
"Do you have copies of the original documents?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
"In a secure location. I made copies before the original incident report disappeared.""
I looked at Robert.
He nodded.
"Ms. Price, can you meet us tomorrow?""
"Yes. But there's something else you should know.""
"What?""
"Rachel asked me to contact you if she died.""
My throat tightened.
"What did she say?""
Evelyn's voice became softer.
"She told me that Vanessa had threatened to take the children away from you. She also said she believed someone was trying to make her too weak to challenge the financial documents.""
I looked at the letter from the safe-deposit box.
Everything was beginning to fit together.
But I still couldn't accept the possibility that someone had deliberately harmed my wife.
"Why didn't you contact me before?""
Evelyn sighed.
"Because after Rachel died, I was told that you had received the complete medical explanation and didn't want further contact. I later discovered that someone had filed a complaint against me for accessing confidential records.""
"Who filed it?""
"Dr. Reed.""
Robert's expression hardened.
"That is important. We will need the complaint and its outcome.""
Evelyn agreed.
Then she said something that made me grip the desk.
"Mr. Carter, there was another patient.""
I froze.
"What patient?""
"A woman who received a similar medication adjustment under Dr. Reed's supervision.""
Robert immediately looked up.
"Was that patient connected to Vanessa?""
"I believe so.""
"How?""
Evelyn paused.
"She was Vanessa's mother.""
The room went silent.
Vanessa's mother had died several months before Rachel.
I remembered the funeral.
Vanessa had told me her mother had died after a sudden decline in health.
I had attended.
I had offered condolences.
I had even helped pay some of the funeral expenses.
Now I wondered whether there had been another story hidden beneath that one.
"Do you believe Dr. Reed harmed her too?"" I asked.
"I can't say that. I only know that the medication records raised questions.""
Robert interrupted.
"Ms. Price, please don't speculate. We need facts, records, and a proper investigation.""
"You're right," Evelyn said.
Then she gave us an address.
It belonged to a small law office on the other side of town.
She agreed to meet us there the following morning.
I returned home after midnight.
The lights in the living room were still on.
Malik was asleep on the couch, one arm hanging over the edge.
Nia was curled up beneath a blanket.
Mrs. Thompson had left a note on the coffee table.
They wanted to wait for you. Both are safe. Call me if you need anything.
I stood there for a moment.
Then I gently picked up Nia and carried her upstairs.
She stirred.
"Daddy?""
"I'm here, sweetheart.""
"Did you find out what happened to Mom?""
I looked at her sleeping face.
"Not everything yet.""
She opened her eyes slightly.
"Will you tell us when you know?""
"Yes.""
She nodded and closed her eyes.
I tucked her into bed.
Then I returned downstairs and covered Malik with another blanket.
He woke briefly.
"You're back.""
"I'm back.""
"Is everything okay?""
I sat beside him.
"We found someone who was there when your mother was in the hospital.""
Malik looked at me.
"Does she know what happened?""
"I hope so.""
He rubbed his eyes.
"Do you think Mom was trying to protect us?""
I swallowed.
"Yes, son. I think she was.""
He nodded slowly.
Then he said:
"I wish I could remember her voice better.""
I felt my heart break.
I took out my phone.
I had several old family videos saved in a cloud account.
One showed Rachel in the kitchen, laughing while Malik tried to decorate a birthday cake.
Another showed her holding Nia as a baby.
I played one quietly.
Rachel's laughter filled the room.
Malik stared at the screen.
Then he smiled.
"That's her.""
I put my arm around him.
"Yes. That's your mom.""
He watched the video until it ended.
Then he leaned against me.
For the first time in three years, I understood how much of their mother's memory Vanessa had tried to control.
She had used Rachel's name to frighten them.
She had made Nia believe her mother would be ashamed of her.
She had made Malik believe he was powerless.
But Rachel had left behind more than documents.
She had left behind a voice.
And we were finally listening.
The following morning, Robert and I met Evelyn Price.
She was in her early fifties, with short brown hair and tired eyes.
She carried a large document envelope.
After introductions, she placed it on the table.
"I brought the original copies I managed to preserve.""
Robert opened the envelope.
Inside were medication administration records, incident reports, and internal hospital correspondence.
He examined the first document.
"This is dated September seventeenth.""
Evelyn nodded.
"That's the night of Rachel's final admission.""
Robert read the page carefully.
Then he turned to another.
"There's a medication discrepancy here.""
"Yes.""
"Who authorized the change?""
"Dr. Reed.""
"Was the patient informed?""
"Not according to the documentation I saw.""
I leaned forward.
"Did Vanessa request the change?""
Evelyn looked at me.
"I heard her ask Dr. Reed whether the medication would make Rachel sleep.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did he say?""
"He told her that it might make Rachel more comfortable.""
"Did Rachel want it?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"She had asked for an explanation. She was concerned about the dosage.""
Robert raised his hand.
"Let's be precise. Do you have direct evidence that Vanessa requested an unauthorized change?""
"I have a note I wrote that night. I documented the conversation I overheard.""
"Did you submit it?""
"Yes.""
"What happened to it?""
"It disappeared from the official file.""
Robert looked up.
"Who had access?""
"Several staff members, including Dr. Reed and the hospital records administrator.""
I leaned back.
I could barely process what I was hearing.
Then Evelyn removed another document.
"This is the report I filed after Rachel died.""
Robert examined it.
His expression changed.
"What is this?""
"My original complaint.""
He read the first page.
Then the second.
Then he stopped.
"Daniel, look at the date.""
I leaned forward.
The complaint had been filed three days after Rachel died.
But it had never appeared in the records we'd received from the hospital.
"Why was this hidden?""
Evelyn answered.
"Because I was told the hospital had decided there was no basis for further investigation.""
Robert continued reading.
Then he found the final page.
It contained a handwritten note from an administrator.
Discuss with Dr. Reed before releasing records to family.
I stared at the sentence.
"Why would a hospital administrator tell staff not to release records to the patient's husband?""
Evelyn looked down.
"I asked the same question.""
Robert closed the folder.
"We will need to obtain the full record through formal channels.""
Then he looked at Evelyn.
"Do you have anything else?""
She hesitated.
"Yes.""
She reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
"I kept this because I thought one day someone would need it.""
She slid it across the table.
I opened it.
Inside was a photocopy of a handwritten note.
Rachel's handwriting.
The words were shaky.
Evelyn, please don't let Vanessa speak for me. I am still able to make my own decisions. If I cannot, please contact Daniel.
At the bottom was a date.
September 17.
The same day Vanessa had been asking Dr. Reed about the medication.
I looked at Evelyn.
"Why didn't you give this to me?""
"I tried. I called the number listed in Rachel's file. Someone told me you had asked not to be contacted.""
Robert looked up.
"Who?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"I don't remember the name. But I remember the voice.""
"Could you identify it?""
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
"I believe it was Vanessa.""
That afternoon, we requested a formal meeting with Dr. Reed.
He refused.
His attorney sent a short statement claiming that all treatment had been medically appropriate and that the hospital records contained no evidence of misconduct.
Robert wasn't satisfied.
He contacted the hospital's legal department and requested preservation of all remaining records.
Meanwhile, the investigator continued examining Vanessa's financial activity.
At 5:20 p.m., Mark called.
"Daniel, we found something.""
"What?""
"Payments.""
"Payments to whom?""
"Several transfers from an account connected to Vanessa to a consulting company.""
I frowned.
"What's the company?""
"Reed Medical Consulting.""
I stopped walking.
"Dr. Reed's company?""
"That's what the records suggest. We're verifying the ownership.""
I looked at Robert.
He had heard enough to understand.
"How much money?""
Mark read the total.
"Approximately eighty-six thousand dollars over fourteen months.""
My stomach turned.
"Was that money connected to Rachel's estate?""
"We haven't established that yet.""
I ended the call.
Robert looked at me.
"If those payments came from trust funds, that would be extremely serious.""
I nodded.
Then my phone rang again.
This time, the caller was Michael.
I answered.
"What's wrong?""
He sounded panicked.
"Daniel, I need to see you.""
"What happened?""
"I've been getting messages.""
"From whom?""
"Vanessa.""
"What does she want?""
Michael lowered his voice.
"She says if I don't tell you the truth about the second signature, she'll release something that will destroy my family.""
I closed my eyes.
"What did you sign, Michael?""
Silence.
Then he whispered:
"Daniel, I didn't just witness the document.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"What else did you do?""
His voice broke.
"I helped Vanessa get access to Rachel's bank account.""
I gripped the phone.
"How?""
"I used my professional credentials.""
I stared at Robert.
My brother continued.
"Daniel, I thought Rachel had authorized it. Vanessa showed me a document with her signature.""
"Was it the same document in the suitcase?""
"I don't know.""
"Michael, what did you access?""
He began crying.
"Her investment account. The trust records. Everything.""
I closed my eyes.
"How much money was transferred?""
"I don't know.""
"Michael!""
He finally answered.
"More than three hundred thousand dollars.""
I felt the room tilt.
Robert slowly stood.
I looked at my brother.
"Where is that money?""
Michael whispered:
"Vanessa moved it.""
"To whom?""
There was a long pause.
Then he said:
"To an account in your name.""
I froze.
"What?""
"Daniel, she used your identity. She made it look like you had authorized the transfers.""
My mouth went dry.
Before I could respond, Michael added:
"There's something worse.""
"What?""
"She has the original document with your signature.""
I stared at Robert.
He looked as if someone had just pulled the floor out from under him.
May you like
Then Michael whispered:
"And Daniel, I know where she got it.""
