Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew My Wife's Final Secret
"Where is the suitcase?""
My voice echoed through the hallway.
Vanessa stood beside the kitchen counter, breathing heavily.
"I don't know.""
I looked toward the storage room.
The cardboard box was still there.
The photographs were scattered.
But the suitcase had disappeared.
Robert immediately called Mark.
"Mark, the suitcase is missing. Secure the entrances and check the property.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"This is getting out of control.""
I turned toward her.
"Where did you put it?""
"I didn't touch anything.""
"Then who did?""
She looked away.
Robert stepped closer.
"Mrs. Carter, did anyone else enter this house tonight?""
"No.""
"Did you call anyone?""
"No.""
Her answers came too quickly.
I looked at the security monitor mounted near the hallway.
Our house had cameras covering the driveway, front entrance, and backyard.
I opened the application on my phone.
The most recent recording showed Vanessa entering the storage room at 8:17 p.m.
She emerged four minutes later.
She was carrying something large.
A black suitcase.
I turned the screen toward her.
"Would you like to try that answer again?""
Vanessa stared at the recording.
Her lips parted.
Then she sat down.
"I was protecting myself.""
"From what?""
She looked at me.
"From you.""
I laughed once, without humor.
"That's your explanation?""
"You don't understand what was happening three years ago.""
"Then explain it.""
She pressed her hands against her forehead.
"Rachel was sick. She was paranoid. She didn't trust anyone.""
I stepped closer.
"Laura Bennett says Rachel specifically asked her to keep a document away from you.""
Vanessa's head snapped up.
"Laura?""
The reaction was immediate.
She knew exactly who Laura was.
"You remember her?""
Vanessa said nothing.
Robert pulled out his phone.
"Daniel, I think we should contact the police about the missing documents.""
Vanessa suddenly stood.
"Don't!""
Robert looked at her.
"Why?""
She turned toward me.
"Because the suitcase contains something that could ruin both of us.""
I stared at her.
"Both of us?""
She swallowed.
"Yes.""
I waited.
She looked toward the staircase.
"Please, not in front of the children.""
I almost laughed.
For months, she'd been willing to mistreat my children when nobody was watching.
Now she suddenly cared about what they might hear?
"No more secrets, Vanessa.""
She lowered her voice.
"Rachel wasn't the person you thought she was.""
My jaw tightened.
"Don't.""
"You always made her out to be perfect. The wonderful first wife. The loving mother. But you didn't know everything about her.""
"I lived with her for twelve years.""
"And I knew things you didn't.""
I looked at her.
"What things?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said:
"She was planning to leave you.""
The words hit me unexpectedly.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Robert watched me carefully.
I shook my head.
"That's impossible.""
"She told me herself.""
"When?""
"Before she got sick.""
I stared at Vanessa.
"You're lying.""
"Ask her sister. Ask anyone who knew her.""
I remembered Rachel's final months.
The hospital visits.
The sleepless nights.
The conversations about the children.
Never once had she suggested she wanted to leave me.
But Vanessa continued.
"Rachel wanted to move away. She wanted to take the children and start over.""
I shook my head.
"Why?""
"Because she thought you cared more about your business than your family.""
The accusation landed hard.
I thought about all those late nights.
All those business trips.
All the birthdays I'd attended through video calls.
Perhaps Rachel had been unhappy.
Perhaps I'd missed something.
But even if she had wanted to leave, it didn't explain the medical records.
It didn't explain the food.
And it certainly didn't explain why Vanessa was hiding a suitcase.
"Where is it?"" I asked again.
Vanessa looked toward the garage.
Then she closed her eyes.
"I put it in my car.""
Robert immediately stepped forward.
"Do not move.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"You're treating me like a criminal.""
"I'm advising you not to remove potentially relevant evidence.""
She sat back down.
I called Mark.
Within minutes, he confirmed that the suitcase was inside Vanessa's vehicle, which was parked in the garage.
He photographed its location and arranged for the appropriate authorities to handle the recovery.
But Vanessa had already given us something more important.
She had admitted that she knew what was inside.
At 10:40 p.m., I finally spoke to Laura Bennett again.
This time, Robert joined the call.
Laura agreed to meet us the following morning at a lawyer's office and provide a copy of the records she had preserved.
She also agreed to give a formal statement through the proper channels.
Before ending the call, she asked me something.
"Mr. Carter, may I ask whether your children are safe?""
I looked toward the stairs.
"Yes. They're with me.""
She was quiet for a moment.
"Good. Rachel would have wanted that.""
I swallowed.
"Did you know she was worried about Vanessa?""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you contact me?""
Laura took a breath.
"I tried. Several times. Your number was changed after Rachel died, and the hospital told me that the matter had been closed. Later, I learned that Vanessa had become your wife's legal contact for certain family matters.""
I frowned.
"Vanessa was never my legal contact.""
"Perhaps I misunderstood. But someone told me you didn't want further communication.""
Robert wrote something on a notepad.
"Laura, do you remember who gave you that information?""
"I believe it was Dr. Reed's office.""
Robert looked at me.
That was another connection.
Another unanswered question.
After the call ended, Robert advised me to make arrangements for the children to stay somewhere safe while the investigation continued.
I refused to send them away.
"They're staying with me.""
"Daniel, I understand. But you also need to consider the possibility that Vanessa may attempt to contact them privately.""
I nodded.
"I'll make sure she doesn't.""
Robert lowered his voice.
"One more thing. I recommend that you don't discuss Rachel's medical history with Vanessa until we've reviewed the original records.""
I agreed.
Then I walked upstairs.
Malik was sitting on Nia's bedroom floor.
They had pushed two pillows together and were sharing a blanket.
Nia was holding a stuffed rabbit.
When she saw me, she sat up.
"Daddy, is everything okay?""
I sat on the floor beside them.
"We're going to be okay.""
Malik studied my face.
"Did you find the suitcase?""
"Yes.""
"Did you find the papers?""
"Not yet.""
He looked disappointed.
I touched his shoulder.
"You've done enough, son. You've helped more than you know.""
He shook his head.
"I should have told you sooner.""
"Listen to me.""
I waited until he looked directly at me.
"You were a child. It was never your responsibility to protect your sister from an adult. That responsibility belonged to me.""
His eyes filled.
"I didn't want Nia to be alone.""
I pulled him close.
"I know.""
Nia crawled into my lap.
"Can we all sleep together tonight?""
I smiled.
"Of course.""
I made a bed on the floor with extra blankets.
For the first time in a long while, my children fell asleep without worrying about who might come into their rooms.
I stayed awake.
I couldn't stop thinking about Rachel.
About the letter.
About the medication discrepancy.
And about Vanessa's claim that Rachel had wanted to leave me.
At 1:13 a.m., my phone vibrated.
A message from Laura.
It contained a photograph of a handwritten document.
The handwriting was Rachel's.
I sat up.
The note was short.
Daniel, if Laura has finally managed to reach you, then I need you to understand that I was right to be worried.
Vanessa has been asking questions about my medication, my insurance, and the children's inheritance.
I discovered that someone had accessed my medical information without my permission.
I don't know how much she knows, but I don't trust her anymore.
Then came the final paragraph.
There is one person who can explain everything. His name is Samuel Reed. He knows what happened during my final hospital admission.
I stared at the screen.
Dr. Reed.
The same doctor whose name had appeared on Vanessa's phone.
I called Laura.
She answered sleepily.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Did Rachel ever tell you why she was suspicious of Dr. Reed?""
"Not directly. But I remember one conversation.""
"What conversation?""
"Rachel asked me whether a patient's spouse could authorize medication changes without the patient's consent.""
I closed my eyes.
"What did you tell her?""
"That it depended on the circumstances, the patient's capacity, and the medical situation. But I told her that her physician had to document any legitimate changes.""
"Did she say anything else?""
Laura hesitated.
"She told me she was afraid someone was making decisions about her care behind her back.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Do you still have the original note?""
"Yes.""
"Can we meet tomorrow?""
"Absolutely.""
I thanked her and ended the call.
Then I heard a floorboard creak.
I turned.
Malik was standing in the doorway.
"Dad?""
"Why aren't you sleeping?""
He walked toward me.
"I remembered something.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
"Mom once told me that Dr. Reed visited our old house.""
I stared at him.
"When?""
"Before Grandma died.""
"Your grandmother?""
Malik nodded.
"Mom said he was checking on Rachel. But he didn't have his doctor's bag.""
I frowned.
"Are you sure?""
"Yes.""
He looked down.
"And I heard them arguing.""
"What did they say?""
"I couldn't hear everything.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"But I remember Dr. Reed saying something about a signature.""
My heart began pounding.
"Whose signature?""
Malik looked at me.
"Rachel's.""
The following morning, Robert and I met Laura at his office.
She arrived carrying a thick folder and a small padded envelope.
She looked tired.
Her hands trembled slightly as she placed the folder on the desk.
"These are the records I managed to preserve.""
Robert reviewed them carefully.
There were medication administration notes, internal hospital communications, and a copy of Laura's original incident report.
Several pages had been marked with handwritten comments.
Robert stopped at one particular page.
"Daniel.""
I leaned forward.
"What?""
He pointed to a section of the document.
The medication had been changed shortly before Rachel's condition deteriorated.
The record showed that Dr. Reed had authorized the change.
But the authorization was unusual.
The original order appeared to have been entered after the medication had already been administered.
Robert read the notes again.
"Was this investigated?""
Laura nodded.
"Internally. But the review was closed without a full explanation.""
"Why?""
"I was told the patient had been receiving appropriate care. I disagreed.""
Robert continued reading.
Then he found something else.
A visitor log.
Two entries had been highlighted.
Both showed Vanessa visiting Rachel shortly before the medication change.
I stared at the dates.
One was the same day Rachel had written her warning.
"Did Vanessa have access to Rachel's room?""
Laura nodded.
"Yes. She visited frequently.""
"Was she ever alone with Dr. Reed?""
Laura looked uncomfortable.
"I saw them speaking privately more than once.""
Robert closed the folder.
"Daniel, we need to preserve all this and request the complete official records. We also need to establish whether the medication change was medically justified.""
I nodded.
Then Laura handed me the padded envelope.
"Rachel asked me to keep this.""
I opened it.
Inside was a small photograph of Rachel holding Nia as a baby.
On the back, she had written:
For Daniel. If I cannot explain this myself, please protect our children.
I couldn't hold back the tears.
For three years, I'd believed I'd failed to save my wife because her illness had been beyond anyone's control.
Now I wondered whether I'd failed her in another way.
By not asking enough questions.
By trusting the wrong person.
Robert placed a hand on my shoulder.
"We'll find out what happened.""
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
It was Mark.
"Daniel, we recovered the suitcase.""
"Good. Did you find the documents?""
"Yes. There are several folders, including the medical records Malik described.""
I stood.
"What else?""
Mark hesitated.
"There's a second phone inside.""
My heart skipped.
"Rachel's phone?""
"I believe so.""
"Is it working?""
"Not sure. But there's something else you need to know.""
"What?""
"The phone contains a recent message notification.""
"Recent?""
"Yes. The message is from last night.""
I froze.
"Who's it from?""
Mark read the name.
*Samuel Reed.*
Then he read the message aloud.
The original agreement is still safe. Vanessa, we need to finish what we started before Daniel discovers the second signature.
I slowly lowered my phone.
Robert looked at me.
"What happened?""
I repeated the message.
He went completely still.
Then he asked:
"Daniel, what second signature?""
May you like
I looked at the folder on his desk.
And for the first time, I began to suspect that Rachel's death was connected to something much bigger than a disputed medical record.
