Chapter 9: The Lie That Almost Took My Freedom
“They’re here because someone reported that Anna Sterling attempted to falsify her own medical records.””
For a moment, I couldn’t understand the words.
They didn’t fit.
They belonged to someone else’s nightmare.
Not mine.
I was the one who had been locked away.
I was the one whose signature had been forged.
I was the one whose medical decisions had been stolen.
And somehow, I was the criminal.
“No.””
The word escaped my lips.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Anna, listen to me.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I didn’t do anything.””
“I know.””
“Then why are they here?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
Someone had planned this.
Someone had waited until the perfect moment.
A wedding.
Three hundred witnesses.
A pregnant woman under stress.
A family reputation on the line.
Julian looked toward the entrance.
His face had lost all color.
“Mom.””
Eleanor didn’t respond.
“Mom.””
This time, his voice was sharper.
“Did you do this?””
Her eyes moved to him.
And for the first time that night, she looked afraid.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
Julian stared at her.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
Seraphina stepped forward.
“Julian, you need to calm down.””
He turned toward his sister.
“You knew.””
She looked away.
“You knew everything.””
“Not everything.””
“But enough.””
Seraphina said nothing.
That was enough.
Daniel looked at me.
“We need to get you out of here.””
I nodded.
But before we could move, the front doors opened.
Two officers entered the estate.
The guests behind them immediately began whispering.
Phones came out.
Cameras appeared.
The same people who had ignored me earlier now watched every movement.
The Sterling family’s private disaster had become public entertainment.
One officer approached.
“Anna Bennett Sterling?””
My heart sank.
“Yes.””
“I’m Detective Harris.””
He held up an identification card.
“We need to ask you some questions regarding the medical documents connected to your pregnancy.””
I looked at him.
“I didn’t create those documents.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
“Do you?””
My voice shook.
“Because everyone here keeps acting like I did.””
The detective glanced around.
At Eleanor.
At Julian.
At the papers in Daniel’s hands.
Then back at me.
“I’m aware there are conflicting accounts.””
Conflicting accounts.
That phrase almost made me laugh.
My entire life had become a collection of people telling different versions of my story.
“I need to speak with you privately.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“She’s in active labor.””
The detective looked concerned.
“She needs medical attention.””
“Then let her leave.””
A voice interrupted.
Everyone turned.
Eleanor.
She stepped forward slowly.
“I will explain everything.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Anna.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“You don’t get to explain my life anymore.””
The words landed.
Even Eleanor seemed surprised.
The detective looked between us.
“Mrs. Sterling, if you have information—”
“She forged my medical records.””
The hallway went silent.
Everyone looked at Julian.
Then Eleanor.
The detective’s expression changed.
“What?””
Daniel handed him the documents.
“These are copies of the altered files.””
The detective looked through them.
Then his eyes moved toward Eleanor.
“Mrs. Sterling?””
Eleanor remained calm.
Too calm.
“I did what I believed was necessary.””
My stomach twisted.
She actually admitted it.
“You forged my signature.””
“I made arrangements.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked at me.
“You would have made the wrong choice.””
I stared.
“The wrong choice?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“You would have chosen your emotions over reality.””
I felt something inside me harden.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You mean I would have chosen my child.””
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
The detective looked at Julian.
“Mr. Sterling, did you know about these documents?””
Everyone waited.
Julian looked at me.
I expected him to protect himself.
That was what he had always done.
Protect the family.
Protect the image.
Protect the name.
But this time…
He didn’t.
“Yes.””
The word shocked everyone.
Especially Eleanor.
Julian continued.
“I knew about the medical concerns.””
The detective nodded.
“Did you participate in creating false documents?””
Julian looked down.
“I signed something.””
My chest tightened.
“Julian.””
He looked at me.
“I thought I was saving you.””
The pain in his voice was real.
But it didn’t erase anything.
“You thought you were saving me by taking away my choice.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The detective wrote something down.
Seraphina suddenly laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
“Look at us.””
Everyone turned.
She looked around the hallway.
“The perfect Sterling family.””
Her smile disappeared.
“Everyone pretending they’re innocent.””
Julian stared at her.
“What are you doing?””
“Telling the truth.””
She looked at the detective.
“You want to know who started all this?””
Nobody moved.
Seraphina pointed at Eleanor.
“It wasn’t me.””
Eleanor’s face changed.
“Seraphina.””
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“You made me believe I was protecting Julian.””
Then she looked at me.
“But the truth is, you were the one they were protecting themselves from.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Seraphina swallowed.
“My mother found out years ago that Anna existed.””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Stop.””
“She knew Alexander Sterling had another child.””
The detective looked interested.
“And?””
Seraphina looked at me.
“She also knew something else.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Seraphina whispered:
“Alexander Sterling left evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“Proof that the Sterling family fortune was never supposed to belong to them.””
The hallway went silent.
Daniel looked at Claire.
Claire looked devastated.
“What proof?””
Seraphina laughed softly.
“A sealed letter.””
Julian frowned.
“From Dad?””
“Yes.””
“Where is it?””
Seraphina looked toward Eleanor.
The answer was obvious.
“Mom hid it.””
Everyone looked at Eleanor.
The detective stepped closer.
“Mrs. Sterling?””
Eleanor’s face changed.
The powerful woman disappeared.
For the first time, she looked defeated.
“I was protecting my children.””
Julian shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Another contraction hit me.
Hard.
I grabbed the wall.
Daniel immediately came to my side.
“Anna.””
I breathed through the pain.
The detective noticed.
“We need to get her to the hospital now.””
Nobody argued.
Not even Eleanor.
As paramedics entered the estate, cameras flashed from outside.
The story was already spreading.
But for the first time, I didn’t care.
I only cared about one thing.
My baby.
My son.
A paramedic checked me quickly.
“We need to move.””
I nodded.
Then Julian stepped forward.
“Anna.””
I looked at him.
He looked broken.
“I know you may never forgive me.””
I said nothing.
“But please.””
His voice cracked.
“Let me come.””
I looked at the man who had betrayed me.
The man who had also once held my hand when we heard our baby’s heartbeat.
The man who was both the person who hurt me and the person who once made me feel safe.
“I don’t know if I can.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
The paramedics moved me toward the exit.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
A man spoke.
His voice was old.
Weak.
But familiar.
“Anna?””
I froze.
Nobody else heard.
Only me.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Alexander Sterling.””
My blood turned cold.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know what they told you.””
My hands trembled.
“They told you I was dead.””
I couldn’t breathe.
The paramedic asked if I was okay.
I couldn’t answer.
Because the man on the phone continued.
“Anna, you need to listen carefully.””
“Why?””
“Because the people around you are fighting over an inheritance.””
A pause.
“And they don’t know the truth.””
My heart pounded.
“What truth?””
His voice became softer.
“The baby you’re carrying…”
I held my breath.
“He isn’t just the Sterling heir.””
The hallway disappeared.
“What is he?””
Alexander whispered:
“He is the reason someone tried to kill me twenty-five years ago.””
The call cut off.
I stood frozen.
And then, from behind me, I heard Daniel say:
“Anna.””
I turned.
His face was pale.
“What?””
He looked at my phone.
Then at me.
“Who was that?””
I swallowed.
“My father.””
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel whispered the words that terrified me most.
May you like
“Anna…”
“He’s been alive this whole time.””
